A Look Back To December 2009

August 31, 2011

It’s almost a little fitting that the very first piece that I did for this site was a scouting report on Tom Milone. Why? Well, I hyperlinked it to show the date it was published: Christmas Eve, 2009. This is not to gloat (well, maybe just a little). Hell, I’m quite well aware that Milone …

Nats Name AFL Roster

August 31, 2011

While I’ve yet to see an official press release, buried in one of the Strasburg/Milone stories were the names of the prospects selected for the Scottsdale Scorpions, Washington’s AFL team for 2011.

• OF Bryce Harper

• C Derek Norris

• LHP Sammy Solis

• RHP Rafael Martin

• RHP Pat Lehman

Taxi squad members (which Harper was last year) will be revealed at a later date, and as the above story mentions, 2011 picks such as Anthony Rendon and Matt Purke are still possibilities to play in that capacity. Unlike last year, the focus doesn’t appear to be on figuring out who to protect for the Rule V draft (still not sure if Martin is eligible) but the more mundane task of supplying the roster with players that fit the description of the AFL as a “finishing school for AA/AAA players.”

Shairon Martis Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week

August 29, 2011

It’s a dozen weekly honors for the Nats farm system, with Harrisburg’s Shairon Martis picking up the hardware for just seven innings of work last week.

The rub, of course, is that nobody reached base via a hit during those seven innings, which came in the first game of doubleheader against New Hampshire. It was the third no-hitter thrown in franchise history.

Martis, acquired in July 2006 in deadline deal for reliever Mike Stanton, has posted an 8-5 mark with a 2.81 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP in 22 starts for the Senators this season. His 143 strikeouts is currently fourth in the Eastern League. More importantly, his BB/9 rate of 2.7 is down from 3.6 last season, which was spent entirely in Syracuse one year after he flamed out as a 22-year-old breaking camp with the big club.

Marrero Promoted To Washington

August 27, 2011

Chris Marrero has become the latest player from our 2011 Watchlist to make it to D.C., as his callup became official this afternoon. He’s in the lineup tonight against the Cincinnati Reds, batting seventh and playing first base. He’ll be wearing #14.

Marrero batted an even .300 for the Syracuse Chiefs, hitting 14 home runs and collecting 69 RBIs in 127 games. He was drafted in 2006 as the Nationals first-round pick at #15 out of Monsignor Pace High School in Miami, Florida. He’s the second player (Cole Kimball) from that (in)famous draft, and the first position player to make the Nationals’ 25-man roster.

Peacock, Moore Earn Eastern League Honors

August 27, 2011

The Eastern League has announced its postseason 2011 All-Star team, with RHP Brad Peacock and 1B Tyler Moore making the grade.

Just 13 players are named to the squad, with the eight defensive positions, a DH, a utility player, left- and right-handed starters and a reliever. The lineup is voted on by league managers, sportswriters, broadcasters and other media members.

Moore, who was the 2010 Carolina League MVP, currently leads the Eastern League in HRs (30), RBIs (87), and total bases (265) — clearly making him a candidate, if not a favorite, for the Eastern League MVP in 2011.

Peacock went 10-2 with a 2.01 ERA for Harrisburg prior to his promotion last month to Syracuse, where he currently sports a 4-1 record with a 3.56 ERA. Combined, he has gone 14-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 170 SOs in 141⅔ innings.

Peacock was also named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year.
