Three Nats Make the BA Top 100

January 18, 2024

Yesterday, Baseball America released its first of 27 or so Top 100 Lists for 2024. Three Nationals made the list. Like one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriends, Cade Cavalli has been dropped from the list. OK, fine: Maybe it’s not because he turns 26 this year. I suppose the Tommy John surgery is the culprit. Robert …

Nats Announce International Signs

January 16, 2024

It would appear the pendulum has swung back to big-ticket signings as the Nationals signed the #7 Int’l prospect (Victor Hurtado) for a reported $2.7M and the #16 IFA for $1.8M (Angel Feliz). That’s $4.5M of the $5.925M allotment for Washington, according to Baseball America. Hurtado, who turns 17 in May, is listed at 6’3″ …

Nats Make Some Minor-League Signs

January 10, 2024

Ask and ye shall receive… eventually. Yesterday marked the first transaction post from BA of the year, and only a mere 38 days after the one prior. Like the Democratic presidential hopefuls aside from Biden, the pickings are slim: 1B Dérmis Garcia RHP Samuel Reyes RHP Ty Tice OF-1B Juan Yepez Garcia had a cup …

Offseason Update: Jan. 4, 2024

January 4, 2024

Sorry, yet another post to assure the SEO bots you the site has not gone dark. It’s just slower than Nikki Haley reading up on the Civil War.

I’ve been hoping in vain for Baseball America to do a transaction post for the month of December, but no luck. I’d rather cover the handful of signings in one fell swoop then report on them individually.

It pains me to write this, but it’s been this way for all of this decade – even prior to the MLB coup d’état – so perhaps the onus is on me to admit that this is the new normal.

But I don’t like it. And I’m willing to bet, neither do you.

.435 — 10 for ’23

December 30, 2023

With the month January—which, with all apologies to T.S. Eliot, is the cruelest month for prospect-following—almost upon us and 2023 almost behind us, let’s take a look at the ten stories that defined the year. In keeping with this site’s tradition of not ranking, these are or more or less in chronological order… A More …

The 2024 NationalsProspects.com Watchlist

December 27, 2023

For better or worse, here are the guys we’ll be watching, cursing, rooting for, and/or sending “get well” cards to for 2024. This upcoming year will be Year Three of the rebuild. Consequently, expectations will be higher despite (or perhaps because of) the “Big Nats” exceeding projections this past season, going from 55 wins to …

Happy Holidays

December 22, 2023

It’s National Mathematics Day for those who aren’t non-plussed, National Short Person for the down-to-earth, the Friday before Christmas for those who celebrate, and the Winter Solstice for us in the Northern Hemisphere. The latter probably is the ray of hope that I’ll choose to focus on, what with two major wars raging in Europe …

Still Quiet on the Minor-League Front

December 18, 2023

We hate to interrupt your National Bake Cookies Day, but we also have to make posts like these to ensure people know the lights are still on. I wish I could tell you why this has become the norm. The cynic in me says this is by design, as MLB no longer wants (or needs) …

All Quiet on the Minor-League Front

December 12, 2023

With all eyes and interest on the Shohei Otani contract—and its rather familiar deferral of paymemts [insert Bobby Bonilla joke here]—there’s not very much to pass along to our little corner of the Natmosphere. I suppose it’s a bit of a story regarding the new vice president of amateur scouting, but you’ll forgive me for …

Nats Restock with Five in the Rule 5 Draft

December 7, 2023

Two years ago, the Nats took four in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft. Last year, they took one—Thad Ward—via the MLB phase. This year, they did both – one in the MLB phase, and four in the minor-league phases for a total of five players. One the one hand, you can argue …
