The Iron Pigs had in-game BP against John Lannan, collecting 13 hits in three and a 1/3rd innings en route to a 6-3 win over the Chiefs. Lannan walked two and struck out one, raising his ERA to 5.24, his WHIP to 1.64 and his OBA to .313. Carlos Rivero’s three-run home run in the 4th broke up the shutout as the Chiefs manage just six hits and got just two (2) runners into scoring position for the game.

Tanner Roark went the distance in Game Two as the Chiefs scored six unanswered run in a 6-1 win that split the doubleheader. Roark gave up one run over seven innings for the second straight start to get the “W.” Carlos Rivero homered again and went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and is now hitting .303/.335/.428 for the season. Eury Perez singled to hit safely for the 10th time in 10 games for Syracuse, and is now hitting .400 (16-for-40). Roster move: C Koyie Hill activated from the DL.

With three runs in the last of the 8th, the Thunder, um, shocked the Senators for a 3-2 come-from-behind win that handed Harrisburg its fourth straight loss, and 16th out the last 20. Jimmy Barthmaier suffered the loss, letting in an inherited runner and two of his own in the fateful frame. Ryan Perry got the no-decision despite six scoreless innings with just two hits and two walks allowed. Harrisburg got just six hits, but none in the clutch for the third straight game, an 0-for-17 stretch.

The force was with Blake Schwartz and Colin Bates as the two Hagerstown pitchers combined to shut out Lexington, 6-0. Schwartz gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out six over the first six innings to get the win, while Bates allowed just a hit and a walk over the final three innings to earn the save. Cutter Dykstra, Caleb Ramsey, and Adrian Nieto combined for six of the eight Suns hits, with Nieto connecting for his 5th HR, Dykstra swiping his 29th base, and Ramsey driving in two to push his RBI tally to 52.

Tri-City scored early and often to take another from Auburn, 9-4. Silvio Medina gave up a pair of solo shots in the first and three unearned runs in the second and took the loss. The ValleyCats roughed up the first two Doubledays relievers (Jack McGeary and Cody Davis) before Elliot Waterman and Andrew Wall shut them down after the 5th with four scoreless innings. Carlos Lopez paced the offense with a 3-for-4 night, drawing a walk and driving in two. Anthony Rendon went 1-for-3 with an RBI, but also struck out and committed an error at 3B. Roster move: Stephen Perez placed on the 7-Day DL.

This week, it’s the Cardinals, then the Marlins, then the Astros with home games on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

1)Ryan Perry really seems to be onto something as a starter.
2)John Lannan is free to stink in Syracuse as long as he pitches for the Nats the way he did against Atlanta.
3)Eury Perez is starting to look like a September call-up, isn’t he?

Eury Perez has a hit in each of his first 10 games at AAA so far. To say that he’s exceeded expectations there thus far would be an understatement.
I can live with his lack if power – 7 homers in 4 US minor league seasons, none above A-ball – but if he isn’t going to hit for power, he needs to start walking more.
He’s only walked 9 times this season – once at Syracuse – and just 69 times in the US minor leagues. For a lead-off type guy, he’ll need to improve that if he hopes to be more a fringe player at the Big League level.
Still, the wheels, batting average and defense seem like the real deal.
1) I think folks should withhold judgment until he does this at AAA, but it does look promising.
2) I think the FO is probably pissed that whatever he just gained in trade value went up in smoke with that outing
3) I’ve felt like he was going to get called up all season long, but now he may actually be asked to hit instead of just play defense.
Is Lannan a lock to be the 5th starter, or is there an outside chance it’ll be Duke? BTW, Maya has a better WHIP and ERA…
I suppose it’s still possible for Lannan to get traded, but this will be a litmus test of sorts for Washington: Are they willing to eat salary to make a deal? This is the first time since ’05 the Nats have been buyers and not sellers, never mind the change in GMs.
Not sure how much weight we can put into the various reports, but all known public info is that the Nats are going to stand pat…
I’d love to hears from eyeballs on the ground, but Zach Duke looks to be the best starter at Syracuse, although he’s not on the 40 man.
Just a typo… Hagerstown is listed as the loser of the 6-0 game… but they won.
As for Schwartz, you think the Nats like his arm? Especially starting him in Auburn and bumping him to Hagerstown… when they usually let the guys languish in GCL/NYP all season long.
Got it. Schwartz actually bypassed Auburn (right from the GCL to Hagerstown), which doesn’t happen all that often. You may be thinking of Brian Rauh. What’s difficult to discern is whether some of this is need-based, given the known surgery of Brian Dupra, the suspected surgery of “For The Weekend” Estevez and what’s most likely just limiting of innings of Kylin Turnbull.
Schwartz never pitched for Auburn. He went from a very so-so GCL start to the season (5.06 ERA, 24 hits in 16 IP – .353 BAA) straight to Hagerstown. I was surprised it was him and not one of the Auburn guys but his second Hagerstown start was very solid.

I watched a bit of the Lannan debacle on MiLBTV yesterday. He seemed to be giving up mostly ground-ball base-hits. A few were hit hard but the majority just seemed to find holes. At least one was off Lannan’s glove. On the other hand, he could stop the Pigs, either. 13 hits is a lot. And, yeah, you’ve gotta think trade value went seriously south. … BTW, the stands were empty. Crickets. Friends and family. I guess that’s an issue for the Chiefs, not the Nats, since they’re only responsible for paying the players — regardless of attendance. I guess AAAers are used to playing in of few fans but yesterday appeared to be a beautiful day in Syracuse and the Chiefs aren’t doing horrible — one game out of 4th place. Iron Pigs and others have fill up the home stands. Syracuse is a long way from DC and Yankee country. Love to know the Nats’ thinking re full vs. empty stadiums for their minor leaguers. Maybe it’s that 1/2 filled stadiums would be nice but they’re not that concerned about it.
