Mark Teahen and Jason Michaels both connected for grand slams as the Chiefs hit double-digits for the first time this season in a 10-5 win over the Red Wings. John Lannan was awarded the win despite giving up all five runs (four earned) on eight hits and four walks. Syracuse pounded out 12 hits total, with Carlos Maldonado the beer man as the sole oh-fer in the lineup, and the first four men in the order collecting two hits apiece. Josh Wilkie and Ryan Perry each tossed a scoreless inning in relief to close out the game.

Danny Rosenbaum continues to dazzle, throwing seven shutout innings to lower his ERA to 0.94 and driving in a run with a sac fly as the Senators blanked the Curve, 8-0. The 24-y.o. walked two (raising his FIP from 2.32 to 2.61; the E.L. average is 3.59) and gave up three hits while claiming his third win of the season. The trio of Chris Rahl, Stephen King, and Sandy Leon combined for seven of the 12 Harrisburg hits, including a three-pitch sequence of double (Rahl), triple (King), and single (Leon) as part of Sens’ five-run 6th. Pat McCoy and Hector Nelo both allowed a hit in their inning of work but kept Altoona off the board to preserve the shutout.

BB&T continues to be a house of horrors for the P-Nats, as they lost for the 16th time in 23 regular-season games by a 14-0 count. The offense managed just two hits and three walks, with Zach Walters and Sean Nicol both going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. Thanks to an error, a wild pitch, and four hit batsmen, Potomac had 11 baserunners total and they were all stranded, including seven with two out. Winston-Salem scored 12 of its 14 runners in its final three turns at bat, blowing open a 2-0 lead to 8-0 with a six-run 6th, then tacking on two in the 7th, and four in the bottom of the 8th, as every Potomac pitcher was charged with at least two runs.

It may have been April 2012, but for the Braves pitchers, it was more like November 1864, as the Suns batters marched to a 24-2 win in Georgia. Steven Souza fell a double short of the cycle and one RBI short of the Sally League record for a single game as the 23-year-old knocked in nine runs while going 4-for-6.
Hagerstown rapped out 24 hits and drew 14 walks (five by Matt Skole, a league-leading 18 for the season). Taylor Hill got the win with two runs allowed on five hits over five innings, while Nathan Karns struck out five over the last four innings to earn the rulebook save.

  1. Lannan may have won, but 4 earned runs in severn innings won’t get him back to DC. Is it possible that Danny Rosenbaum could be passing him in the depth chart? Also, Ryan Perry can’t expect a call-up if he keeps walking people that way, even if he gave up no runs.

    Not fair to gripe on what was a good day for the system, but I am hoping for better for/from those guys.

  2. How do you get notification on who is starting? Duke is easy to figure out, but how do you know Arnesen is starting the second game, and how do you find out who is starting the second game for Rochester? I’m just curious.

    1. I receive various press releases from the teams. A lot of teams post the Media Notes online, including Syracuse and Rochester.

    Good day for the system, although there seems to be trouble with the PNats pitching staff. More than just this game.

  4. How soon before Skole passes Rendon on the depth chart? I’d like to see him against more challenging pitching soon.

    1. If I knew how long Rendon will be out and what was done to his ankle, I might be able to answer that question.

      FWIW, Skole is a little more than five months older than the median age for the South Atlantic League, per BA. In other words, the players are indeed getting older at each level, which is precisely what VladiHondo predicted during the offseason.

      And I’ll repeat, under Rizzo’s watch (2009-) promotions below AA generally have not come until June or July. Cameron Selik is the earliest one I can think of (May 4, 2011), and he was four months shy of 24 vs. four months shy of 23 for Skole.

  5. The problem with comparing Skole to Rendon would have a lot to do with their defense. Apparently, there is no actual comparison as Rendon is considered outstanding and Skole is likely destined for another position.

    1. This all becomes a nonissue if they just move Rendon to 2B.

      Skole (who’s currently way undermatched) is no longer positionally blocked, and Rendon (whenever he returns) shows us if he can cut it at 2B.

      It almost makes TOO much sense!

  7. If anyone can hit at the moment, there’s a place for them in the DC club (some of the hitting lines this year so far are abysmal).

  8. After several years I’m starting to take note of Rosenbaum. Can someone give me a scouting report on him? What does he throw, what kind of speed, control, and velocity does he have? Lastly, what chances does he have of making it to the majors and is it as a starter or a reliever?

    1. Rosenbaum throws a fastball, cutter, change and will spot the curveball. He tops out around 93, but generally works anywhere from 89 to 91. His control has been spotty at times, but it’s never been above 3.0/9IP. His most important asset is that he never gives in to hitters (e.g. no get-me-over FB on a 3-1 count, he’ll throw a breaking ball), and a close second is that he can win without his “A” game (e.g. can’t get one of his offspeed pitches over for strikes).

      As a LHP that throws strikes, Rosenbaum will always have a chance at the majors. John Sickels puts his ceiling as a #4 SP, Baseball America as a #5 SP. At the very least, if he continues to show this kind of command, he’ll be a LOOGY. Whether it’s for Washington is another story, as the current GM has a fetish for fireballing RHPs out of the ‘pen.

      2. I see Rosenbaum as a potential trading deadline bait to get a big bat for down the stretch, assuming the Nats are in contention as seems likely.

    1. I assume by Taylor, you mean Taylor Hill and not Taylor Jordan, who’s on the DL with TJ surgery.

      Both Hill and Karns are on our Watchlist for RH Starters. I’ve yet to see them in person, so I don’t have much more to add.

  11. I just wanted to say I read every day and greatly appreciate the coverage on your site. It is one of 4 or 5 that I check every morning.

    Do you have a good take on how they are using Walters in Potomac? Are they grooming him as a utility guy or more of an everyday player? He seems to me to be Lombo light.
