Yunesky Maya and Austin Bibens-Dirkx combined on a six-hit shutout while every Chief in the lineup got a hit, as the Chiefs won their first game, 4-0. Tyler Moore led the 11-hit effort with a 3-for-4 game, while Seth Bynum homered. Bryce Harper shifted to RF for the game, with Corey Brown manning CF.

The pain of losing a second straight game pales in comparison to the possibility of losing Anthony Rendon to a leg injury for an extended period of time. Multiple online reports are stating that it was his left leg (he has fractured his right ankle twice), but Nationals officials are mum on the severity. Rendon slipped after rounding third, attempting to score on a Justin Blxom single. He had doubled toe lead off the inning and was attempting to score with just one out. Sean Nicol filled in admirably, going 2-for-2 and driving in both Potomac runs. Bobby Hansen took the loss, giving up a pair of runs in the first two innings on five hits (one HR) and two walks.

Alex Meyer threw five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while fanning four to win his professional debut. Matt Skole and Jason Martinson combined for five of the Suns seven hits and each drove in a run. Hendry Jimenez made two costly errors in errors in the eighth, giving away the third Power run but also turned a double play to end the inning, helping Aaron Barrett notch his first save of the 2012 campaign.

  1. Will be good to see what Rosenbaum and Turnbull do today. Any thoughts or intel on reason for Harper being shifted to RF yesterday? Just a way of spread-loading the wear and tear of CF?

    1. Probably, plus it doesn’t hurt to keep Corey Brown in practice. I have a feeling he’ll put it in time at all three OF positions over the course of this season.

  2. Rendon slipping better not have had anything to do with the conditions of the field at Potomac. That could be the last straw if he misses a significant amount of time.\

    Was thinking that Meyer started a level too low. 2 more starts like this and he’ll be in Potomac.

    1. Unfortunately, no mention of whether it was a Grade 1, 2 or 3 sprain. The hope is that it’s a simple Grade 1 inversion, which will have him back before the end of the month (1-2 weeks is the typical estimate, but you have to figure the Nats will be as conservative as possible).

  5. Alex Meyers line according to MiLB was Pitches-strikes: Meyer 25-25. My question is the number of pitches and being strikes correct and why pull him after only 25.

    1. It’s an algorithm error or something to that effect. Typically, pitch counts are only done with AA and AAA boxes on Gameday. Even if that were 25 balls and 25 strikes, that’s WAY too low for five innings pitched and 17 batters faced (less than 3 pitches per batter).

      1. I’ve done this on Twitter… 4 strikeouts = 12 pitches. 11 other outs = 11 pitches. 2 hits = 2 pitches. 12+11+2=25.

        1. So there were absolutely no foul balls with two strikes? I’ve put the question to MinorLeagues on Twitter because it’s clearly incorrect.

          1. I don’t think you are following me. I am saying it is wrong. The above is explaining their counting, not what happened in the game. They are counting strikeouts as 3 pitches, walks as four pitches, all other outs as 1 pitch…ect. The same thing happened with Dylan Bundy the other night.

          2. I think we lost track of who was disagreeing with whom; yes, I’m with you: The pitch counts are ridiculously wrong. One of my followers is a minor-league broadcaster and he explained it thusly: “They don’t enter all the pitches in at the stadium, they relay the plays to someone who is feeding the game remotely.” My beef is that if it’s not right, don’t put it in the boxscore.
