For those of you that dig the superfluous, you’ll be pleased to learn that Bryce Harper and Derek were both named to the inaugural 2011 AFL Top Prospects team.

  1. A couple of thoughts:
    1) Eury Perez is taking walks? Inconceivable!
    2) H Rod’s walk rate remains a concern.
    3) Cora and Rodriguez are on this list by a thread. Neither should be back next year.

    Never know how much to read into Winter League stats. After all, Maya was raising hope in Winter League last year.

  3. Dunno Souldrummer but I’m looking at Hassan Pena the other ~100 mph fb reliever and wondering if he isn’t ready and shouldn’t be marked ahead of Balester and Tatusko?

    1. Pena’s trip to AAA last year really makes me think he is an OG, but I would give him another shot at AAA before just stashing him in the minors

  4. The one pitchers’ numbers that caught my eye is ‘our little friend’ Atahualpa Severino. After four plus years in the Nationals system as a competent reliever, he’s currently burning it up as a LOOGY in the DWL. Scroll back up & take a look at that statline again, I’ll wait… …those numbers are just stupid good, aren’t they?

    1. Severino! When he gets the slider over the plate, he is nasty. The only downside is that he is a 2 pitch pitcher, so when the slider isnt working, your in trouble. Think HROD light. MOAR SEVERINO!

      1. But you’d agree that against a diet of 80-90% LH batters (LOOGY role), a 96mph fastball / 92mph slider coming from a 5’9″ Mighty Mouse on the mound is pretty sweet.

        1. Its really sweet, and as Severinos self appointed #1 fan, I would be thrilled if he broke camp with the Nationals. If that happened I would definatly be buying a Severino shirt.

  5. Interesting article at Baseballamerica.com re turmoil being commonplace in Auburn NY with the Doubledays. Seems the volunteer board that runs the organization made major changes since June — long time president (June); and short time GM and assistant GM (September). The GM’s got a law suit going claiming breach of his employment contract. … The young Nats had a good 2011 campaign there so I guess the business management and baseball on the field are separate problems.

    1. Just my take, but it reads like the ownership council (and possibly the fanbase) is a bit adverse to change, and that Club Pres. David Daum in particular could be a micromanager. That could just be Levinson’s spin on the overall story, or there could be more meat on the bone.
      Overall, it’s just a tempest in a teacup, given that it’s a mid-level team in the Nationals’ overall structure.

  6. To Jeff550 you really need to take a good look at how very long Severino is been with the Nats in the minors-i have to tell you its been many yrs and he has done bad too. As Pena he only had that one chance in AAA and like 7 games total plus think about he never had one full season bf only like 2 full yrs playing healthy and he has done an awsome Job made the allstar game and he do super, in my opinion he should be making a good role in the bigs soon. I’m also asuming that’s is not only my opinion.
