Shairon Martis Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week
It’s a dozen weekly honors for the Nats farm system, with Harrisburg’s Shairon Martis picking up the hardware for just seven innings of work last week.
The rub, of course, is that nobody reached base via a hit during those seven innings, which came in the first game of doubleheader against New Hampshire. It was the third no-hitter thrown in franchise history.
Martis, acquired in July 2006 in deadline deal for reliever Mike Stanton, has posted an 8-5 mark with a 2.81 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP in 22 starts for the Senators this season. His 143 strikeouts is currently fourth in the Eastern League. More importantly, his BB/9 rate of 2.7 is down from 3.6 last season, which was spent entirely in Syracuse one year after he flamed out as a 22-year-old breaking camp with the big club.
Shairon Martis has earned this accolade with a great performance – Kudos to him. His season-long performance with Harrisburg will help the Senators in making the playoffs & possible greater achievements this year, but will probably only get him back to Syracuse, should he re-sign with the Nationals’orginization in 2012.
