Rochester Red Wings, 3-10, 10th place I.L. East, 8GB
Thanks to rainouts, the Red Wings are only on a four-game losing streak entering this week. The (ugh) Woo Sox make the first of two trips to The Imaging City, with a matinee today, Friday, and Sunday. Still no word on corresponding moves for the callups of Nasim Nuñez and Cole Henry.
Harrisburg Senators, 4-5, 4th place E.L. Southwest, 3GB
Harrisburg climbed out of the cellar by taking four of six from Richmond, despite scoring more than four runs just once. SSDY. This week, they make their one and only trip to the Manchester not by the sea, with rain forecast for tonight and a high of 49 tomorrow. But better than last weekend…
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 3-6, T5th place Sally Lg. North, 4GB
Wilmington split its series against Hub City but remains in last place. This week it’s up 95 to 87 and over the Cuomo Bridge (maybe, given the current ownership, they may hook onto Rte. 202 in PA and go over the Bear Mountain Bridge on Rte. 6 instead) to play the first six of thirty games against the Renegades.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 5-4, 2nd Place C.L. North, 3GB
The FredNats took five of six from the Red Sox to go from 6th to 2nd place. This week, Fredericksburg visits first-place Fayetteville for six, but would need to repeat last week’s feat to come home in first place. Roster moves: IF Everett Cooper placed on the 7-Day I.L.; IF Kelvin Diaz activated from XST.
I’ll be curious to see what the Red Wings do with their vacated spots from Nunez and Henry.
In Harrisburg, Grissom is by far the most talented, and most prospect-y of the Senators bullpen. I was mildly surprised he didn’t make the Rochester roster straight off, as he spent the large majority of 2024 in AA, and posted excellent numbers (2.87 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 1K/IP) as a 22 year old. He’s the logical, obvious choice, but Garrett Davila is another candidate, who started the season well, and already has over 100 IP of AAA experience.
Nunez’s replacement, however, is less clear. The Red Wings can plug his hole with super-utility man, Lipscomb, which gives some flexibility on whom to promote (it doesn’t have to be a SS). Lipscomb has already played every infield position + LF in Rochester’s short season so far. So they could go ahead with an infield of House, Lipscomb, Baker and Yepez, and promote some irrelevant, innings eater, like Arruda or Viandel Pena, for depth/PH opportunities. This would have the added bonus of freeing a starting spot for Phillip Glasser, who’s only been able to play every other game, despite hitting .533. A win-win, if you ask me!
I’m all for patience and will allow for some awful playing conditions but the younger hitters in Wilmington have got to get it going
