Rochester vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre – PPD
Inclement weather was cited for the postponement of the Red Wings-RailRiders game. In layman’s terms, it was cold as balls. They’ll shoot to make it up with a doubleheader this afternoon.
Richmond 7 Harrisburg 4
• Shuman (L, 0-1) 5IP, 5H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K
• Cuevas ⅓ IP, 2H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 0K, HBP
• Wallace 1-3, 2R, 2B
• Stubbs 1-3, 2R, BB
Harrisburg rallied for two in the 7th and two in the 9th to make this look closer than the 7-4 final. Seth Shuman lost despite allowing only one run on five hits over five innings, with no walks and four whiffs. Cayden Wallace and C.J. Stubbs both scored twice despite Harrisburg’s woeful 2-for-12 mark with RISP. Roster moves: SS Kevin Made placed on the 7-day I.L. (effective 4/4).
Hub City 6 Wilmington 1
• Sthele 5IP, 5H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 4K, WP
• Huff (L, 0-1) 1IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 1K
• Boissiere 1-3, BB
• Green 1-3, R, BB, 2K
Hub City snapped a 1-1 tie with two in the 6th, then put the game away with a three-spot in the 7th as Wilmington dropped its 4th straight, 6-1. Travis Sthele came away with a no-decision after throwing five innings of one-run ball on five hits and two walks. He struck out four. Chance Huff took the loss on the aforemtnioned two runs let in on three hits in his lone inning pitched. Branden Boissiere, Elijah Green, and Caleb Lomavita each had a single while Jared McKenzie collected a double to round out the Blue Rocks’ four-hit barrage.
Fredericksburg 9 Salem 8
• Roman 2⅔ IP, 6H, 6R, 6ER, 3BB, 2K, HBP
• Amaral 2IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 5K
• Baldo (BS, 1; W, 1-0) 1⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• R. Diaz 2-5, R, RBI, 2K, 2SB
• Ross 1-3, 2R, 2BB, HR, RBI
• Nunez 1-3, 2R, BB, 2RBI
Jackson Ross’s two-out walkoff HR took the edge off blown leads of 4-0 and 8-7 as the FredNats got into the win column with an 8-7 triumph. Angel Roman was blasted for six runs on six hits and three walks over two and 2/3rds as the Red Sox solved him in the second turn through the lineup. Unlike Sunday, the bullpen only allowed two runs the rest of the way and piled up 13 K’s along the way. Merrick Baldo had three of them while getting the (dreaded) blown-save-win. Randal Diaz led the hit column with two singles and two steals while Ross reached base three times and scored twice to lead the Fredericksburg offense.
Finally, a win!
Some more positives yesterday than recent days:
Shuman had a very good outing. I think he won’t be long in Harrisburg.
Randal Diaz has looked lively so far (.375/.444/.375). He hasn’t flashed any power, but he’s stretched 4 of those 6 hits into extra bases via the stolen base.
And Jackson Ross continues to impress, this time with his first professional walk off in his second professional game.
Meanwhile, Yohandy Morales remains hitless this season with a 38 K%. Maybe the prospect watchers were on to something.
It was 40 in Harrisburg last night, with a wind chill around freezing. The fur hat giveaway was a nice touch — wearing it, I felt like Marko Ramius taking Red October out of Polyarny — and I went to the game with winter coat, scarf, and gloves.
The new LED lighting is nice. It’s brighter and not as harsh. I’ve heard that it may not attract the mayflies to the degree the old lights did.
I left after the sixth — it was just too cold — and from my vantage it seemed there was a steady stream out the gates starting around the third.
Michael Cuevas walked the bases loaded in the sixth, and there was a mound conference. The stadium PA began to play an organ version of “Always Look on the Bridge Side of Life.” I shouted out, in a bad attempt at imitating John Cleese, “What have the Romans ever done for us?” No one near me seemed to find that funny. Cuevas would hit the next batter.
Sorry if I missed this, but any news Jake Bennett ?
This was mentioned on blackhawks broadcast on AM: the overall temperature in Chicago on a recent cubs day game was colder then the day the hawks and blues played outdoors in January .
No Sthele Sunday pattern yet ? Amazing
And no gust winds from Elijah green wiffs in Wilmington ?
Adding to this: Cade Cavalli news?
Rizzo said last week that Cavalli is on an innings limit after missing so much time due to TJ; so, the have delayed his start of the season. Rizzo claims Cavalli is healthy, throwing in West Palm and will be ramping up in May. We shall see.
