Tuesday’s News & Notes
Team | Yesterday | Today | Pitching Probables |
Rochester | Lost, 5-4 | OFF DAY | N/A |
Harrisburg | OFF DAY | @ Bowie, 6:35 p.m. | Solesky (2-4, 3.12) vs. Bright (0-11, 4.50) |
Wilmington | OFF DAY | @ Brooklyn, 7 p.m. | Tepper (0-0, 4.50) vs. Thornton (1-2, 3.72) |
Fredericksburg | OFF DAY | vs. Lynchburg, 7:05 p.m. |
Worcester 3 Rochester 1
• Alvarez (L, 4-5) 5⅓ IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 4BB, 3K, E
• Medina 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2-0 IR-S
• Pinckney 2-4, 2B, RBI, 2K
• Meneses 1-4, R
Rochester barely avoided a shutout as Joey Meneses singled with two out, took second on defensive indifference, and scored ahead of Andrew Pinckney’s RBI double in the 9th inning of a 3-1 loss to Worcester. Andrew Alvarez gave up two runs on five hits and four walks over five and a 1/3rd innings while striking out three to lose his fifth game. Pinckney also singled and was the sole Red Wing batter to reach base twice for Rochester. Roster moves: OF Robert Hassell promoted from Harrisburg; RHP Orlando Ribalta optioned from Washington.
Harrisburg Senators, 23-34, T5th place, 16GB, E.L. Southwest – 61-65 Overall
The Senators make their final road trip of 2024 with a trip to Bowie to play the BaySox for five night games and a day game on Sunday. It’s not clear if there will be a corresponding move from Wilmington, though an obvious candidate would be Phillip Glasser given his age (24) and his usage in the outfield. That move may not come until next week when guys may be “promoted” from Wilmington to play one more week. Likewise from Harrisburg to Rochester the following week.
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 24-36, 6th Place, 11GB, Sally Lg. North – 55-71 Overall
Wilmington won its first series since late July but finishes the season with a trip to Brooklyn for six. They would have to sweep the Cyclones in order to not finish in last place in the second half.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 35-25, 1st Place, ½ GA, C.L. North – 70-55 Overall
The FredNats return to Fredericksburg to close out the second half against the Hillcats for six, including a matinee tomorrow. With the abbreviated playoff schedule, there is functionally no difference between winning the second half or qualifying as the wild card team; Fredericksburg hosts Game 1 of the CLDS either way. Meanwhile, Seaver King was named the Carolina Lg. Player of the Week for Aug. 26 – Sept. 1, going 8-for-22 with six runs scored and three RBI.
Keith Law on seeing Susana at Wilmington (Athletic subscription):

“I caught his last home start of the year for Wilmington on Saturday, which was also his first pro outing with double-digit strikeouts, and it was a mixed bag: He does have two plus pitches, and the velocity is absurd, but the command and control still lag well behind.”
His conclusion: “He won’t turn 21 until March, so in the context of his age he’s doing extremely well — we’re not waiting on stuff and he’s performed at two full-season levels now. I do think he’s going to run into trouble next year between the below-average command, which is at least in part a function of the delivery, and the lack of a real weapon for left-handed batters.”

Topic of the moment or maybe Todd’s next blog on nationals arms race : the next wave .
So many kids needing 500 more ABs in their dawning pro careers . Repetition repetition repetition. .
We know the tool sets of so many of the afore mentioned talents like Elijah , Christian V, the bonus babies doing their best to remove the “ training wheels “ from the initial career rides .
Goodness knows if we placed Elijah in the late 80 s he wouldn’t have to take the path of the likes of Sosa , Bonds and LaRussas Bash Bros by the Bay . Elijah just has to keep following his baseball
Guardian angels .
Is Pimentel working himself into a viable talent for the upper levels with this batch of kids around him in A – and lower ?
Glasser should fit in well at SS in Delinos lineup .
Thus should be an interesting off season and pondering where the recent draftees fit on the early 2025 Big Board .
