Editor’s note: None of Sunday’s game notes listed a starter for today. These are based on what’s available on MiLB.com as of virtual press.
FCL Nationals 2 FCL Astros 1
• Portorreal 4IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 4K, BK, WP
• Roman (W, 3-0) 5IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 3K
• Alu 2-4, R, RBI, SB
• Marcano 1-1, 3BB
Jake Alu singled and scored in the 4th then had an RBI single in the 5th, which was enough for the FCL Nationals to edge the FCL Astros, 2-1. Leuris Portorreal made his tenth start and allowed the F-Astros run on four hits and three walks over four innings. The win went to Angel Roman with five scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out three. Alu’s RBI single was the one hit in 14 RISP chances, as the F-Nats drew eight walks and stole four bases.
DSL Nationals 10 DSL Mariners 2
• Vera 3IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 6K, BK
• J. Hernandez (W, 1-1) 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 0K, 1-0 IR-S
• Jo. Pena 3-4, R, RBI
• Solano 2-3, 3R, BB, HR, 2RBI, SB
• Tejada 2-3, R, BB, 2B, RBI, 2SB
• Marmolejos 2-4, R, 2B
The D-Nats scored in five of seven “ups,” including four in the 7th as they sunk the D-Mariners, 10-2. Alejandro Vera went the first three innings and let in one run on two hits and four walks while striking out six. Jose Hernandez got the last four outs and credit for the win, his first of ’24, with no hits, no runs, and one walk. Jose Pena led the 15-hit parade with three singles while Edwin Solano got his first homer of his career and Dashyll Tejada stole two more bases.
Since I couldn’t remember, others probably can’t either, so I’ll share my findings: Jake Alu is no longer on the 40-man. Trey Lipscomb seems to be getting a long look in the multi-position role with the big club that Alu played last year.
Davey said that Lipscomb will play essentially everyday at 3B. This is by default as the only other 3B on the roster is Vargas, and he is not part of the future. Depending on the extent of the Nats’ fire sale, they could put Carter Kieboom back on the 40 man roster to play 3B, if Lipscomb completely flops, as it seems doubtful that House will be ready before seasons end (and the Nats would not want to start his service time clock).
BTW, seems likely that the Nats will deal more bullpen arms (Floro, Finnnegan and Law), if that happens think Brzykcy will get a shot. He’s already on the 40 man roster.
Eyes can now follow Dustin Saenz in Fred on his rehab .
Will has mentioned how good Dashyll Tejeda has been in the DSL, but our two big bonus babies from last year are doing well, too.
Angel Feliz is hitting .318 and getting on base at a .383 clip (for the season) while Victor Hurtado is really coming on after a very slow start. He’s hitting .280 with an OPS of .838 in July. He’s accounted for 2 HRs and 4 doubles over those 12 games.
Both Feliz (who has also swiped 14 bags) and Hurtado are still only 17 years old.
Don’t forget the lefty swinging book end with Hurtago on DSL .
In Tucson Arizona talking up Jackson Kent with Wildcat baseball fans . Here there are more pigskin fans .
Luck be a Lady tonight in Harrisburg .. sing it Frank Sinatra .
Plus he hit a 3rd homer in a game that got suspended and cancelled. He homered in 3 straight games. I love his swing.
Jose A Ferrer promoted to the Nats. Willingham back to Rochester.
