• Cluff 1-3, R, HR, RBI
The Red Wings used both the longball and some smallball to overcome a 4-0 deficit to gandy-dance past the RailRiders, 5-4. Thad Ward was pushed an inning too far, as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe got to him for three runs on a home run in the 6th without an out. He allowed all four RailRiders runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five. Three relievers combined for four scoreless, with Tim Cate getting the win and Rico Garcia earning his 10th save. Travis Blankenhorn delivered an Earl Weaver special in the 6th and Jackson Cluff went solo in the 7th to tie. Carter Kieboom walked, stole second, and scored the game-winner on Darren Baker’s second single. Roster moves: RHP Eduardo Salazar optioned from Washington (waiver claim from Seattle).
Harrisburg 5 Bowie 2
• Luckham (W, 3-4) 7IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 5K, 2HR
• Acosta (SV, 1) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 2K,
• House 3-3, 2R, HR, RBI, HBP, SB
• Crews 2-4, 2R, SB
• Barley 1-3, BB, E(5)
Seven strong innings from the starter has de rigeur for Harrisburg starters as Kyle Luckham acheived the feat for the second time this month in a 5-2 win over Bowie. Luckham allowed both BaySox runs on homers and five hits total. He walked one and struck out five while winning his third game. Brady House had his second three-hit game (fifth overall) with two singles and a homer while Dylan Crews singled twice, scored twice, and stole a base to lead the Senators offense.
Jersey Shore 5 Wilmington 0
• Cornelio(L, 5-5) 5⅓ IP, 7H, 5R, 4ER, 2BB, 3K, WP
• Collins 1⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Dugas 1-2, BB
• 15 batting K
The BlueClaws jumped on Riley Conrelio for two runs in the 1st and cruised to 5-0 shutout of the Blue Rocks. Cornelio gave up all five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over five and a 1/3rd innings to drop his fifth game of the year. Gavin Dugas was the sole Wilmington batter to not strike out, as he reached base twice on a single and a walk.
Fredericksburg 1 Carolina 0
• Sykora 5IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• K. Rodriguez (W, 3-1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Ochoa 1-2, BB
• Brown 0-3, BB, R
Four Fredericksburg pitchers combined to shut out Carolina, 1-0 on four hits. Travis Sykora went the first five and allowed two hits, no walks, and struck out three. Kevin Rodriguez followed with two goose eggs, giving up a hit and a walk. He was the pitcher of record when Marcus Brown scored on a Crithian single and an Mudcats error. Samuel Vasquez worked around a walk in the 8th for the hold while Merrick Baldo allowed the fourth hit with two out in the 9th to get the save. Roster moves: IF Murphy Stehly assigned from Wilmington for MiLB rehab.
FCL Nationals 7 FCL Cardinals 0 – SUSP
The rains came after the F-Nats put up six in the 2nd to take a 7-0 lead. They’ll finish this one on June 27.
DSL Giants Black 8 DSL Nationals 5
• J. Hernandez 2⅔ IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, 5BB, 0K, WP
• Robles (BS, 1; L, 0-1) 2⅓ IP, 4H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, HR
• A. Feliz 2-4, 2B
• Obispo 2-4, R, SB
• Tejeda 0-2, 2R, 3SB(12)
The DSL Nationals scored single runs in five of their first seven “ups” to take a 5-4 lead, but blew it in the 8th with four runs let in – the last three on a HR. D-Nats starter Jose Hernandez was knocked from the box in the 3rd, with four runs let in on four hits and five walks. He struck out like Glen Powell at a singles bar (zip). Jean Robles got the (dreaded) blown-save-loss with with four runs on four hits and two walks, but did strike out three. Angel Feliz and Juan Obispo both went 2-for-4 while Dashyll Tejeda stole three bases to lead the D-Nats attack.
Eduardo Salazar has a career AAA ERA of 7.23. Glad we signed him, rather than recognize a few really good performances from Daison Acosta (2.77 ERA, 39K in 26 IP) or Jack Sinclair (1.71 ERA, 0.87 WHIP in 26 IP) in Harrisburg. That would’ve been silly.
Another great outing from Skyora, reaching the 5th inning for the first time. Looks like he could be as good as advertized.
I’m hoping House has managed to shake his dreadful slump he’s been mired in for the past month. Over his past 7 games, he’s hitting .360/.385/.680, but perhaps most impressively, he’s only struck out 3 times in that span.
Wow on Sykora.
Is it OK to be just a little bit disappointed in Brady House? I don’t think so. Brady is a kid. He just turned 21 a few days ago. He’s got HR power and a nice OPS. All that at AA ball.
the first half has been discouraging for the younger bats at F’burg. with a new hitting coach I had hoped for more. a strong finish is needed for the group.
Indeed. Even among the old bats, there’s little positives to be said. Dugas and Glasser are probably the only good performances among the nearly 20 batters to have played in Fredericksburg, but they’re already in Wilmington. Even Brandon Pimentel’s hot start has died. He’s hitting .222/.277/.274 since May 1st…
The less that’s said about Green, Cruz, Ochoa Leyva, Vaquero and Cooper, the better. If you squint, there’s some positives to be taken from Brenner Cox’s play so far this season. He’s cut his K% by 7% (still, an unsightly 36%), and he’s hitting for power more than ever before (5 HR compared to only 2 career HR in his previous 2 seasons), and he’s walking at a healthy 15%. But defensively, after being scouted as a potentially good CF, he looks like he might be a liability, even in the corner OF spots. He’s somehow committed 6 errors from RF this season. But he’s still young and raw, so nothing is preordained yet.
But like our systematically bad fundamentals in the DSL (which one would imagine could be improved with better coaching), Fredericksburg looks like it too could use some better instruction (Rochester’s pitching coaches too).
Rico Beltran needs a replacement?
Is it too early to promote soon to be 25 year old Thomas Schulz to AA?
So who’s going to pick up their Mike Rizzo bobblehead tonight?
