Nats Take Third Straight, 4-1
Trey Lipscomb’s two-out, two-run triple highlighted a three-run 6th as the Nats beat the Mets, 4-1 last night to extend their winning streak to three
Lipscomb, who was the only watchlist player in the starting lineup, was lifted for Darren Baker in the Top of the 7th as manager pause for laughter Dave Martinez sent out the replacements for the starters.
Five other watchlist players appeared in the game:
- Jacob Young replaced Lane Thomas in RF and had one putout and grounded out in 7th.
- James Wood pinch-ran for DH Joey Gallo and scored ahead of Lipscomb’s triple. He would bat as the DH and struck out to lead off the bottom of the 8th.
- Drew Millas was the second backstop and caught the last three innings. He struck out for the second out in the 8th.
- Baker did not bat and had no defensive chances at second base.
- Dylan Crews subbed for Victor Robles in CF in the 8th but did not come to plate or field any balls in play.
The win improved the Nats’ ST record to 9-8. This afternoon, it’s another trip to Jupiter, FL to visit the Marlins. Jake Irvin is expected to start. The can be heard locally on 980AM or on MLB Radio.
BRZYKCY OPTIONED
In a mildly surprising move, the Nats optioned RHP Zach Brzykcy to Rochester instead of (presumably) placing him on the 60-day I.L. This would seem to indicate that he’s on track to return in mid-to-late May. It’s probably also reasonable to infer that, like Joan Adon, Brzykcy had four options, thanks to the lovely little exception for players being placed on the 40-man with less than five full seasons of MLB/MiLB experience.
I seem to recall Davey saying early in the spring that Brzykcy was “a week” behind Cavelli in recovery. How he calculated that I don’t know, but yes, it would seem that the 60-day IL would have made more sense than an option.
Lipscomb continues to flash. The personnel numbers may be against him making the big club out of camp, but clutch hits like that certainly will keep him on the radar for the near future.
Enos Cabell reincarnated into Trey Lipscomb ??
Second mug of coffee …
Fishing day for Nats today
If I remember correctly, Enos had more speed and not as versatile as Lipscomb.
Don slender as poles both
looks like a pretty fair comp to date.
Have the Nats ever signed so many relievers for their NRI spring list and AAA/AA competitive depth charts ?
Kieboom DFA’d and has cleared waivers, as I thought he would. I’m glad he’s still with the organization, even though I no longer expect great things from him. If House, Lipscomb, and Baker are at AAA, though, where does Carter play?
House starts the season in Harrisburg. He’s only played 36 games there so far, which is coincidentally the same number of games he played in Fredericksburg (repeating the level from 2022) to start the season before getting promoted.
Then where does Morales play? I agree that there’s no rush for House (or for Crews, who may need more time at AA as well), but they seem intent on keeping Morales at 3B for a while. And he sure seems ready for AA.
I’m not laughing at Davey Martinez. He’s much better at his job than we are at ours (unless you have the equivalent of a WS trophy stashed in your den).
With a h/t to former Washington Senator Rocky Bridges, it’s clearly still true that one of the things that the average person thinks that they can do better than anyone else is manage a baseball team.
