DSL Nationals Losing, 3-2
(Susp. Bot. 6)
@ DSL Red Sox Red, 11 a.m.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 6 Rochester 5
• Troop 3IP, 7H, 5R, 4ER, 3BB, 2K, HR
• Reyes 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 4K, WP
• Cessa (L, 0-3) 2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 1K
• Adams 3-4
• Mejia 1-3, R, BB, HR, RBI, E
• Blankenhorn 1-4, R, HR, RBI

Rochester dug itself out of a 5-0 hole with a pair of solo HRs and a three-run 7th, but the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre answered with one in its half of the 7th to win, 6-5. Alex Troop’s second AAA appearance wasn’t much better than his first as the 27-y.o. was lit up for five runs on seven hits and three walks over three innings. The first Luis out of the ‘pen tossed three scoreless, but the second Luis (Cessa) gave up the gamewinner on a pair of doubles while finishing the game. Matt Adams singled three times while Erick Mejia and Travis Blankenhorn hit the aforementioned homers. Roster moves: UT Jeter Downs recalled to Washington; OF Cody Wilson reassigned from Wilmington; C Drew Millas activated from 3-day T.I.L.; C Steven Williams returned to Development List; RHP José Ureña released.

Erie 12 Harrisburg 4
• Parker 4IP, 8H, 3R, 2ER, 1BB, 2K, WP
• Alston (L, 2-4) ⅓ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K, HR, HBP
• Lipscomb 3-4, R, RBI
• Wood 1-4, R, HR(10), 2RBI

The SeaWolves scored in each of their last five “ups” to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 12-4 impeachment of the Senators. Mitchell Parker went the first four and was strafed for eight hits but only gave up three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out two. Garvin Alston took the loss as he retired just one of four batters faced, giving up a two-run HR after hitting the first batter he faced. Trey Lipscomb led the Harrisburg hit column with three singles while James Wood hit his 10th homer at AA (18th overall). Roster moves: C Israel Pineda reassigned from Wilmington.

Hudson Valley 6 Wilmington 2
• Luckham (L, 3-4) 5IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 4K, 2HR
• Powell 1IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K
• Lawson 2-2, R, BB
• Stehly 2-4

Hudson Valley broke open a 1-0 game with a three-run HR in the top of the 5th and cruised to a 6-2 win over Wilmington. Kyle Luckham lost for the fourth time as he gave up the Earl Weaver Special and four runs total on five hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four. The law firm of Cortland, Lawson, Murphy, and Stehly combined for four of the six Blue Rocks hits while Carter Kieboom homered and Branden Boisserie singled.

Salem vs. Fredericksburg – PPD
The Red Sox and FredNats were rained out. They’ll make this one up tonight with a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m.

FCL Cardinals 8 FCL Nationals 4
• C. Sanchez (L, 0-2) ⅔ IP, 4H, 5R, 3ER, 0BB, 1K
• Carmona 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Crews 3-3, 3R, 2B
• Ochoa Leyva 3-4, 2RBI

Batting practice came in the 1st inning as the FCL Cardinals teed off on Camilo Sanchez for four hits in the space of seven batters before he got the hook. He would be the losing pitcher in an 8-4 F-Nats loss to the F-Cards… not that any of you care beyond seeing that Dylan Crews singled twice, doubled twice, and scored thrice in his (paid) pro debut. He’s expected to make his first start in Fredericksburg on tomorrow night. Roster moves: Assigned from Washington – OF Dylan Crews (1st. Rd. pick, ’23); HPs Travis Sykora (3rd), Thomas Schultz (9th), Travis Sthele (12th), RHP Mikey Tepper (15th), Merrick Baldo (17th), Matthew Bollenbacher (NDFA), and Liam Sullivan (NDFA).

DSL Colorado 3 DSL Nationals 2 – SUSP.
• H. Moreno 3⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 3BB, 4K
• Oliveros 1IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 1K, WP
• E. Soto 2-3, 2B
• Tejeda 1-2, BB

DSL Colorado took the lead in the top of the 6th, thus the DSL Nationals were denied their last “ups” by the rains/t-storms/locusts/rapture. Best guess as to when they’ll finish this is August 9th, when both teams have an off day.

Can we assume the other recent drafted pitchers not mentioned (Jared Simpson and Austin Amaral) will not be pitching this season?

Well no Pasquel Perez resurrection with Jose Urena

the durability of the Nats MLB starters has spared us the sight of watching the insurance policies pitch in DC.

Amaral has been added to FNats roster and was slated to start last night

Thanks. Missed that transaction in all the other movement.

It’s quite surprising to see all the pitchers get named to a squad. There were 3 or 4 pitcher draft picks last season (Bennett and Cornelio, off the top of my head) who never appeared.

But I guess we’ll need to wait and see if any other them play.

Though looking at their workloads, the majority are relievers in this draft class, so even 5 or 6 games until the end of the season won’t add any meaningful innings. And of the starters, none were even close to reaching 100 IP.

With all these names I’m second guessing whether Liam Sullivan ( not the late author ) was drafted or NDFA.

      1. Jeffrey Familia familiar says:
        August 5, 2023 at 3:42 am

NDFA was a typo next to Liam Sullivan
Pineda sure gives balance and depth to Delino lineup
Michael Cuevas . Doesn’t last three innings but rubber arm Aero – Rod to the rescue .

    4. Jeffrey Familia familiar says:

Amaral as we see started for Fred and Jared was a jewel for two IP .

Trey Lipscomb has understandably gotten all the plaudits for his recent hot streak, but Murphy Stehly has actually been outperforming him. After going 2 for 4, Stehly is now batting .429 (!!!) in 11 games in Wilmington. Most of us thought he couldn’t possibly improve on his .394 batting average in Fredericksburg (23 G) and yet here we are…

Do we suddenly have infield depth?

Stehly and Lipscomb both had breakout seasons as college seniors with big programs, and I liked that the Nats took a chance on them. Both have some super-utility flexibility. Despite this being Stehly’s first full pro season, he turns 25 next month, though, so the clock is ticking fast on him. At least he’s finally getting some playing time.

As someone noted yesterday, Lipscomb sort of got a social promotion to AA after pretty mediocre numbers at A+. But he really seems to have found something, as 43 games at AA is no longer a terribly small sample size, and he’s slashing .320/.343/.500. About all he isn’t doing well is taking walks. He’s only 23. At worst, he looks like he could be a very effective super-utility guy. At best, he eventually could put himself in the starting conversation a 2B. I can’t see Baker as an MLB starter, but I could see Lipscomb or Alu, if Garcia can’t find his mojo.

Uggla was a late bloomer and Rule five guy right ?

When they drafted Dugas this year, Kris Kline compared him to Uggla, who he and Rizzo drafted with the D-Backs back in the day. I think Stehly has more defensive worth/flexibility than Uggla (which is a pretty low bar, I know).

another solid performance from Marlon Perez, if Antuna doesn’t lose a high fly ball in the clouds he goes three scoreless. he doesn’t throw hard but he hits his spots and gets results

Murphy “Freaky” Stehly just continues to hit. Shame he was hurt so much or he’d probably be further up the system by now. That said, unless he gets some more pop – only 1 HR in the minors – he’s gonna have to learn another position besides third, especially with House, YoYo, Lipscomb, etc… ahead of him.

His numbers profile well for 2B, where he would be competing with Baker and the oft-discussed Luis Garcia to move up. Although, the aforementioned Lipscomb is probably gonna factor there, too.

Curious to see if any of the youngins’ at the FCL who are hitting well – Cristhian “Sonny” Vaquero, “Dr. C” Everett Cooper, Nathaniel Ochoa Leyva and Jorgelys Mota – will get a chance in F-Burg this season.

The Fred roster is stuffed .
I’d imagine the shuttle plane from PBI to DCA won’t leave with complex promotions .
