Rochester Red Wings, 15-22, 10th place I.L. East, 12½ GB
It’s a grueling 75-minute road trip down I-90 this week as the Red Wings visit the Bisons this week. After a 4-2 week, Rochester is just percentage points out of 9th place, which, along with $3, gets them a cup of coffee. Speaking of which… Roster moves: RHP Cory Abbott, UT Jake Alu optioned from Washington; OF Cory Dickerson MLB rehab ended.
Harrisburg Senators, 16-16, T3rd place E.L. Southwest, 1GB
Harrisburg remains at City Isle for another week, hosting second-place Erie and riding a three-game winning streak that’s brought them back .500. This week, it’s another movable object vs. a stoppable force as the Eastern League’s worst pitching and weakest offense match up!
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 17-15, 3rd place Sally Lg. North, 3½ GB
Unbeknownst to the Blue Rocks, their starting CF – James Wood – was named the South Atlantic League’s Batter of the Week for May 8-14 after posting a line of .346/.433/.769 with two HR and seven RBI. Wilmington heads to the Jersey Shore this week for six against the BlueClaws.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 11-20, 6th place C.L. North, 7GB
The FredNats acquitted themselves with a 3-3 showing last week on the road against the division-leading Mudcats. This week, it’s another series against a C.L. powerhouse as the second-place Columbia FireFlies come to town for their one and only trip to the ‘Burg. Multiple sources are reporting that Cole Henry will come out of witness protection make a MiLB rehab start for his first outing since last June. Officially, it’s the tireless TBD.
Until Cole Henry shows up the Nats are still 0-2 with pitchers recovering from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Strasburg and Harris never recovered, Harris being paid $24 million to pitch 23 innings and Strasburg, well, we know the rest.
Henry is an elite pitcher IF healthy.
I’m scheduling an appt in Milford Deleware myself . But I am not dealing with pitching careers in the balance
Looking at bats….setting the minimum at 50 AB gives us Cortland Lawson, a middle infielder (14th rd pick in 2022) in the top spot. As we all know, James Wood is raking.
OPS (50 AB)
1. C. Lawson FBG 939
2. J. Wood WMT 930
3. D. Millas HRB 916
4. T. Harris HRB 910
5. D. Lile FBG 896
6. B. House FBG 881
7. M. Adams ROC 859
8. T. Blankenhorn ROC 848
9. D. Baker ROC 839
10. S. Infante FBG 839
(B. Rutherford HRB 908 w/ 42 AB)
Notables:
R. Hassell FBG/HRB 752 (833 in 40 AB post-rehab)
E. Green FBG 691
Is Cortland Lawson (Dominion HS, Sterling, VA) the new Jake Alu? The organizational field is wide open for a SS-capable utility infielder who can hit a little. Plus our friend Jeff could rebrand himself as Dawson2Lawson.
lol
Hope Lawson gets a promotion soon. For one, he’s currently blocked by higher pedigree prospects in Fburg in Armando Cruz at SS and Sammy Infante at 2B (unless they opt to promote Infante to clear space for Lawson?). Second, Wilmington could use the middle infield help. Pena at 2B is batting and anemic .198/.327/.235, while Barley at SS has been better but not noteworthy at .250/.337/.395. Third, Lawson turned 23 four days ago (happy birthday!), so he’s no spring chicken, and as a 14th rounder, he’s firmly in sink-or-swim range. Fourth, I also expect Fredericksburg is going to get reallllly crowded in July with the new batch of recent draftees, so better to start clearing some bottlenecks now. We can’t have our 2023 14th rounder getting blocked by our 2022 14th rounder.
. . . and at AA: Arruda (.206), Valera (.147), Sanchez (.184), Cluff (.160). Maybe Barley gets a social promotion?
I wonder if Strasburg andHenry have looked into the Tesla med
Bed
We almost need Paul Harvey with his other side of the story with some of the WP stories with arms like Tyler Dyson .
Hence upcoming amateur draft
Draft 12-13 arms see what rises like bread dough .
not to mention Riggs Threadgill and Cody Greenhill
I had some real hopes for Dyson. One has to wonder whether there were some underlying medical issues coming out of college that contributed to his slide in the draft. After his freshman season, and even during his sophomore year, he was in 1/1 conversation, certainly top 5-10. During COVID, when they were showing replays, I watched him dominant LSU in the CWS finale and wondered what had happened to that guy.
* dominate. Six innings, three hits, no runs.
From Mark Zuckerman yesterday:
* Carter Kieboom, only days after officially coming off the IL at Triple-A, has been shut down again with an injury. The 25-year-old third baseman, who just finally returned from the Tommy John surgery that knocked him out the entire 2022 season, is now dealing with a lat issue, according to Martinez.
Martinez added that Kieboom was due to undergo an MRI on the lat, but he wasn’t aware of any results of that test yet. Kieboom had gotten off to a good start in Rochester, going 4-for-9 with a double and a homer. He hasn’t played in five days, though.
Keiboom is starting tonight for Rochester.
That’s good news. It was curious that they didn’t put him on the IL.
hitting the quarter pole for the first half (yeah I know that doesn’t quite work), hitters heating up, pitchers finding their grooves. the next 5-6 weeks will be interesting to see who keeps it going. overall I’m not disappointed with the start, consistency will be the goal moving forward. I’d expect some mid-season promotions if all goes well. stay healthy boys!
Mama said there would be days like this
Coke Henry has two IP Parker wishes he had Vs Erie and especially Colt Keith .
