The Red Wings blew a 6-1 lead but got it back in the 7th when Travis Blankenhorn was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Matt Adams. The (ugh) Woo Sox threw the ball away trying to throw out Adams at second base as he took a wide turn on the throw home. The umpires said they got him at third base on the ensuing relay though it was very close. Both Adams and manager Matt LeCroy were ejected. Gerson Moreno picked up the win in relief with two scoreless while newcomer Tyler Danish worked around a hit batsman in the 9th for the save. Adams drove in two while going 2-for-4 while Darren Baker connected for a three-run double and went 2-for-5 to lead the Rochester offense. Roster moves: RHPs Amos Willingham, Odalvi Javier reassigned; IF Jeter Downs, RHP Jose Mujica placed on the 7-Day I.L., retroactive to May 13.

A two-out error turned a would-be inning-ending groundout into a walk-off loss for Bowie as Harrisburg won again by a 3-2 count. Alemao Hernandez turned in four innings in his AA debut, giving up a run on HR and three hits total. He walked one and struck out four. The win went to Tim Cate, who dispatched the BaySox in the top of the 10th on eight pitches. Jackson Cluff homered in the 2nd and scored the game-winning run in the 10th while Blake Rutherford, Leonel Valera, and Frankie Tostado each had a single to round out the Senators’ four-hit assault. Roster moves: OF Donovan Casey activated from 3-Day T.I.L.

Jacob Young capped off a four-hit game with an RBI single in the 9th to give the Blue Rocks a 3-2 walk-off win. That made a winner out of Todd Peterson, who put up two goose eggs in relief. Starter Chance Huff went a career-long seven innings, giving up both Cyclones runs on a two-run HR and two hits. He walked two and struck out five. Young reached base five times with two singles, two doubles, and a walk while Jordy Barley and Viandel Peña both reached base with a single and a walk to power the Wilmington offense. Roster moves: 1B Will Frizzell demoted from Harrisburg; RHP Thomas Ruwe assigned from Washington (MLFA, released 3/29 by New Hampshire).

Fredericksburg dropped its third straight to Carolina, lowlighted by a four-run 7th that turned a 2-1 nailbiter into a 6-1 defeat. Bryan Sanchez got the spot start and let in one run on two hits and a walk over four innings. Jose Atencio allowed the last five runs on four hits and two walks over two and 1/3rd innings. It was his fifth straight outing with multiple runs allowed. The FredNats fell a home run shy of the cycle on the night, with a single by Branden Boisserie, a double by Brady House, and a triple by Sammy Infante, who scored the lone run on a sac fly by Daylen Lile.
Promoting a prospect from Low A to AA is wildly ambitious but sometimes it can work. Jackson Rutledge has transitioned nicely and looks like a promising pitcher once again.
On the other hand, Will Frizzell needs to spend some time at High A to rediscover his stroke.
Never really thought of as a prospect by anybody, including me, Darren Baker now has a .864 OPS at AAA. Remarkable!
As I noted the other day, “Frizzelled” may have to replace “Rineharted” in our lingo. Frizzell had only played 45 professional games (not counting AFL) before being sent to AA: 11 at the complex and 34 at A. Then they jumped him to AA. Not even Soto or Harper got advanced that far with so little experience, and there’s no reason to think that he’s in the Soto/Harper class.
The underlying positive here is that the organization must have been really positive about what Frizzell brings to the table for them to give him such an aggressive push. Let’s hope he can rediscover those skills at the new stop in his development.
The Wilmington lineup ended the night with five of the starting nine below the Mendoza line, so other organizational adjustments may be coming. Our guy T. J. White is really scuffling at .167. He doesn’t turn 20 until late July, so there’s still plenty of time for things to click.
