Rochester vs. Syracuse – PPD
From the Syracuse PR folks: “Due to continued and anticipated cold temperatures, for the health and safety of the players and fans, Friday night’s game between the Syracuse Mets and the Rochester Red Wings has been postponed.” They’ll shoot to play a doubleheader this afternoon to make it up.
Somerset 6 Harrisburg 5
• Rutledge 4⅔ IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 4BB, 7K, WP
• C. Romero (BS, 1; L, 0-1) 2IP, 2H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 4K, 2HR
• Millas 4-4, 2R, HR, RBI, E
• Antuna 1-4, R, HR, SF, 2RBI
Both teams homered twice, but the Patriots did it with a man on while the Senators did not. That proved to be the difference in a 6-5 win for Somerset. Jackson Rutledge made his AA debut but couldn’t make it through five full. He gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks over four 2/3rds while striking out seven. Carlos Romero gave up both Patriot long balls – a solo number to blow the save in the 7th and a two-run shot in the 8th to ride the “L.” Drew Millas led the Harrisburg hit column with four hits, including a HR. Yasel Antuna drove in two with a sac fly in the 5th and homer in the 9th.
Aberdeen 4 Wilmington 2
• A. Lara 5IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K
• Peterson (L, 0-1) 1IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 1K
• Lipscomb 2-4, R
• McKenzie 1-2, 2BB
• 0-10 RISP, 10 LOB
Wilmington put 11 runners on base and got the help of an error, but only two crossed the plate in a 4-2 loss to Aberdeen. Andry Lara turned in five innings of one-run ball in his High-A debut, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. The Blue Rocks ‘pen also faltered late as Andrew Alvarez let in the equalizer in the 7th while Todd Peterson gave up two in the 8th to take the loss. Wilmer Perez drew a leadoff walk in the 9th and was safe at second on a missed catch that also put the tying run on 1st. Perez remained there for the rest of the inning as a grounder to third, a strikeout looking, and foul pop completed the “perfect” 0-for-10 with RISP. Roster moves: OF Jeremy De La Rosa reassigned from Harrisburg; UT Jake Alu assigned from Rochester for MiLB Rehab.
Fredericksburg 4 Lynchburg 1
• Bennett 5IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 8K
• B. Sanchez (W, 1-0) 2IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 3K, WP
• Ciuffetelli (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 2K
• Infante 3-4, R, RBI, 3SB
• House 2-4, R, HR, 2RBI
• Green 2-4, R, 2B, 2SB, OF assist @ 2B
• 2-13 RISP; 10 LOB
SSDY in the recaps, no? If you’ve made it this far in hopes of looking for redemption, you found it as the FredNats got the only win in the Nats minors, 4-1 over the Hillcats. Jake Bennett was perfect through four and finished with one hit allowed, no walks, and eight whiffs in five innings in his pro debut. He threw 60 pitches, 48 for strikes. Alas, he would not get the win as Fredericksburg also struggled to push across runners despite 13 hits and five stolen bases.
Sammy Infante got the first hit with a RISP to tie the game at 1-1 with a two-out single in the 6th. The second came as Brady House crushed a two-out, two-run HR in the 7th to give Fredericksburg a 3-1 lead. Infante would score the final run in the 8th on a steal of third and an errant throw trying to throw him out. Christian Ciuffetelli cordero’d through the 9th with two walks and two whiffs to pick up the save. Roster moves: C Geraldi Diaz on the 7-day I.L.; OF Elijah Green reassigned from the FCL Nationals; SS Paul Witt reassigned from Wilmington.
Outside of a disappointing night for James Wood with 2ks and no hits, lots of good news despite the lackluster win total. Brady House showing power and Jake Bennett showing command are the highlights in my opinion.
Not a terrible start for Rutledge. Too many walks, for sure, but let’s see how he does after 5 or 6 more starts.
Not being a nit picker but there was a scoring scenario for Somerset enhanced by a Millis throwing error .
Cold weather in Jersey not a bad start for JR and Delinos dudes
We’re seeing that Felipe Alou running philosophy from Delino out of the gate .
Ho hum Bennett 5 IP 8 Ks
Good to see Alu making his way back to eventual Rochester PT.
I’m guessing that the COMPLEX kids will involve maybe four everyday players on the FCL roster including CV?
Four kids from the DSL 22 roster ..
Here is a stat to keep an eye on
JT Arruda had 16 SB last season .3 last night leading for Delino .
Send will be more interesting once Hassell and Tostado give depth on roster .
Likewise, let’s not pencil in Bennett for DC in June just yet. If there are no rainouts (or some other reason why a pitcher won’t pitch on schedule, iykwim), he’ll get four more starts in April. Unfortunately, two of those will be against Lynchburg again. I love the six-game series from a standpoint of predictability, but it has a cost of taking much longer for a guy to see the whole league (and vice-versa for hitters).
Great point Luke .
The minors being nickel and fined like the old carnival vaudeville years
Man this is a major coffee day with cool weather when the dog goes on patrol 3-5-7 am .
Like baby diaper changing .
We just have to wait for more humidity for the sake of pitchers getting great grips on all their pitches and hitters sweet spots connecting better
It’s bad that Bennett is starting at Low A. Thought he was more advanced than that.
It would be bad if Bennett started in low A and didn’t dominate; but he did.
I’ve seen 50+ FredNats games in person and that was easily the most dominant pitching performance I’ve seen live.
Bennett was an easy 92-94 all game and just pounded the strike zone.
One start is exactly that: one start. But it appears he’s exactly as advertised. A potential quick mover who could eventually slot nicely at the back end of a MLB rotation.
Since Bennett didn’t pitch at all as a pro last year, it makes sense to start him in A. Great to see him dominate, as one hopes he would. A couple of more starts like this and he’ll move up quickly.
The Nats have five or six starter prospects in the minors with high ceilings, and three were on the mound last night. Bennett was dominant and Lara was very good in his A+ debut (at age 20). Rutledge was more of a mixed bag in his AA debut, but not bad. Considering that he had two infielders in the OF (Cluff and Antuna), he probably didn’t have the finest of defenses behind him.
Ok time for the salute to JR fully
: cold weather, road trip and a Yankee affiliate
Kudos JR
It’s good to see Alu playing, and hitting. Hope they can move him back up to AAA soon. If Luis Garcia continues to struggle at the plate, Alu is now on the 40-man, increasing the likelihood that they might give him a look.
Good to see so many hits by the young hitting prospects — Antuna (1, HR), Alu (1), Lipscomb (2), White (1), McKenzie (1), Young (1, 2B), House (2, HR), Green (2, 2B), Infante (3), Quintana (2), Cruz (2), Lile (1), Cox (1). It helps the confidence of all to get off to good starts.
On the flip side, it’s interesting (but not surprising) that they dropped de la Rosa back to A+, where he promptly K’d three times while going 0-for-5.
Thanks for summarizing a good night so succinctly, KW. About the only one who had nothing but struggles was Wood. Here’s hoping his helium rankings aren’t premature after he looked similarly overmatched in the limited looks we saw of him in spring training.
Hi all, looking at my list of players, I don’t see the following players – anyone know their whereabouts/issues? Or maybe these folks are in XST?
(The numbers are just how old they will be by the end of the year).
A. Hernandez (24)
Knowles (25)
Merrill (25)
Moore (25)
Saenz (24)
Shuman (26) – TJ?
Stainbrook (27)
Yankosky (25)
Brzykcy (24)
De La Cruz (22)
Davis (24)
N. Gomez (25)
Greenhill (25)
Grissom (22)
Powell (24)
Threadgill (24)
Hassell (22) – recovery from Hamate bone surgery?
Tostado (25)
Dyson (26)
Brzykcy suffered a “forearm strain” early in camp, in late February. At that time, they said he would be shut down for two to four weeks. Of course there’s absolutely no reason to expose any pitcher with a hint of arm irregularity to Upstate NY in April.
With de la Cruz, there are so many touted OFs in the lower minors that one suspects that there isn’t any room for him. He’ll be kept in FLA until someone like Green gets promoted.
Haven’t seen any recent news on Carter Kieboom, either, who presumably will be ticketed for Rochester. Word in camp was that he couldn’t throw at all, so one would suspect that he’ll start off as DH and perhaps see some time at 1B.
Fonzi coming back from arm surgery Year off ?
Dyson is an enigma of info relayed to fans ?
Shuman yup TJ
And then the clock just ticking on guys
Or just plain numbers crunch
Right ?
Damn, really would like to see Jarlin tonight at FBurg but it’s going to be < 50 degrees.
