Marlins Blank Nats, 7-0
Miami scored in four of its first five “ups” to build a 7-0 lead that the Nats barely challenged—three hits, three walks, one (1) runner reaching second base. The loss stopped Washington’s ST win streak at four.
Trevor Williams gave up all seven runs on ten hits, including a Rickey Henderson in the top of the 1st to lead off the game, over four and 2/3rds innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Jeter Downs got the start at 2B and reverted to the mean, going hitless in three trips to the plate while striking out twice.
Thad Ward pitched in relief again and put up a goose egg in the 7th with a 1-2-3 inning and two whiffs.
Just two watchlist players came off the bench:
- Jared McKenzie followed Alex Call in LF in the 7th and grounded out to end the 8th
- Elijah Green subbed for Victor Robles in CF in the 8th but did not up to bat
The Nats remain in West Palm Beach to host the Tigers tomorrow afternoon. Chad Kuhl is slated to make his fifth appearance and second start for Washington against Eduardo Rodriguez for Detroit. The game can be heard on MLB.com (both teams’ feeds) and locally on 980 AM.
Rule 5 pickup Thad Ward continues to look like one of the few legit highlights of the spring. The only head-scratching thing about him is why they refuse to consider him as one of the starter options.
Speaking of head scratching, it’s starting to look like they’re determined to give roster spots to Downs and Chavis. Failed-Prospects-R-Us. Chavis’s OBP last season was .265. That’s not even close to acceptable.
where they are developmentally opening day is not as important as where they are at the end the year. it’s still a work in process. I suspect they see Ward as a possible 4-5 starter, just not yet.
Are you implying that they may actually go about things more intelligently this season that the abomination that they inflicted upon poor Juan Adon last year? That definitely would be an advancement.
I don’t have any idea how well Thad Ward will do. Also, he’ll be in his second season back from TJ so still will have some limitations. We’ll see. Let’s just say that as of now, the bar to be in the Nats’ rotation is very, VERY low.
Kuehl 2 Kuhl lol
