Rochester Red Wings, 50-61, 8th place, 12GB, I.L. East
Last week, the Red Wings broke their 19-game losing streak and almost won a series for the first time in more than two months. Any plans to let C.J. Abrams get some confidence back at AAA went out the door with (yet another) injury, this time to Luis García. This week, Rochester heads east on I-90 to visit Worcester.
Roster moves: SS C.J. Abrams recalled to Washington.
Harrisburg Senators, 13-26, 5th place, 14½ GB, E.L. Southwest (43-65 overall)
Numerous online reports have it that Robert Hassell and Yasel Antuna will be moving on up to AA today. No word yet on the backfill, if any. Harrisburg heads west to visit Altoona for six this week.
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 20-22, 4th place, 4GB, Sally Lg. North (55-52 overall)
The Blue Rocks make their last stop in New Jersey this week with six against the BlueClaws. They’ll still have to pass through the state in two weeks when they visit the Cyclones.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 26-15, 1st place, 4½ GA, C.L. North (59-48 overall)
It’s the penultimate Battle of the ‘Burgs as Fredericksburg visits Lynchburg for the last time in the regular season, as, barring a meltdown, the two teams are on course to meet in the CLDS next month.
FCL Nationals 13 FCL Cardinals 1 – GM. 1
• E. Lee 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Agostini (W, 2-1) 5IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 3K, HBP, WP
• Santana 2-3, 2R, BB, RBI
• Green 2-4, 2R, RBI
• Tomlin 1-2, 2R, 2BB, RBI
With the help of three errors and seven walks, the F-Nats racked up 13 runs on just nine hits in a 13-1 smackdown of the F-Cards. Following rehab outings by Evan Lee and Ike Schlabach, putative starter Gabriel Agostini picked up his second win with five innings of one-run ball on a hit and three walks. Elisel Santana and Elijah Green and Elisel Santana both singled twice, scored twice, and drove in a run to lead the F-Nats offense.
FCL Cardinals 3 FCL Nationals 2 – GM. 2
• Ciuffetelli 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Cedeno 4IP, 3H, 0R, 1BB, 6K, 2WP
• Marquez (BS, 1; L, 2-2) 2IP, 2H, 3R, 0ER, 0BB, 5K, HR
• Cruz 2-4, R, 2B, RBI, E(15)
• Green 1-2, 2B, 2BB, SB
A two-out, three-run HR erased a 2-0 lead as the F-Cards dealt the F-Nats a 3-2 loss to split the twinbill. After kicking the tires on Christian Ciuffetelli for an inning, Jose Cedeno came on for four scoreless and six whiffs. Franklin Marquez took the loss on the aforementioned HR with three hits total, no walks, and five strikeouts over two innings. Cruz, who committed the error that made the HR possible, singled, doubled, and drove in a run while Elijah Geen walked twice and doubled once to pace the F-Nats offense.
DSL Nationals 12 DSL Twins 8
• Rivas 3⅔ IP, 7H, 5R, 5ER, 1BB, 6K, HBP, BK
• Carmona (W, 3-1) 3⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 1BB, 4K, 2-2 IR-S
• Ramirez 3-5, 2R, 2B, 3B, 2RBI
• Mota 3-5, RBI, SB
• De La Cruz 2-3, 2R, 2BB, 3RBI, SB
A six-run 7th completed a comeback from a 6-2 deficit as the D-Nats downed the D-Twins, 12-8. Gustavo Rivas got the start and the hook after three and 2/3rds innings, with five runs let in on seven hits and a walk. Josue Carmona let in both inherited runners but finished with three and a 1/rd scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk while fanning four. Enmanuel Ramirez singled twice, doubled once, scored twice, and drove in three while Edward De La Cruz reached base four times with two walks and twin singles and drove in three to lead the D-Nats attack.
Roster moves: LHP Evan Lee assigned from Washington for MLB Rehab; LHP Ike Schlabach assigned from Harrisburg for MiLB rehab; IF Lucious Fox assigned from Rochester for MiLB rehab.
Luke is the photo implying
“ Moving on up to the East Side ….” ??
The pitching conga line today is the same bunch as five days ago .
Things settling down for rotations up and down the chain
I can almost hear Nick Banks say to himself after hearing about Dahl opt out : yeah .. more playing time and ABs .
Don’t count on it. If Daniel Johnson is headed to AAA then he’ll be taking that playing time.
Rumors are swirling that Antuna and Hassell have been promoted to Harrisburg and Daniel Johnson to Rochester. Haven’t found anything credible yet, nor the corresponding demotions/releases/injuries.
My first reaction was surprise. Both Antuna and Hassell do not currently deserve a promotion. But then again, the more aggressive development approach I’ve been hoping for will necessarily promote players even when they aren’t tearing it up. And I guess if you squint, Antuna’s .371 OBP is good. He’s also played 205 games in Wilmington now (even if he only hit .231/.338/.379 in that span), and is on the 40 man roster. So if he can’t cut it now, he likely never will.
Hassell is a different story. He was deserving of a promotion before he was traded to the Nats, hitting .299/.379/.467 in the Midwest League, but he’s struggled since joining Wilmington, batting only .211/.311/.237 in 10 games. But on the whole, his line of .290/.371/.442 is plenty good enough for a promotion. Hope he got the new last night on his 21st birthday!
With Wilmington suddenly short on outfielders, I wonder what this means for James Wood, but Jared McKenzie could be a candidate too…
The matchbox hitting dimensions on City Isle has pumped up many ex- po / Nats kids stats through the decades
Michael Barrett still in Nats PD staff?
Jamey Carroll STILL hasn’t joined Barrett in coaching ranks for Nats ?
Amazing …
Will you should tag on the next domino up effect from promotions : Jared McKenxie or Wood up could mean Roismar Q up from the Complex .
The Nats should brand a tee shirt for women fans visiting WPB:
“ I’m a Complex woman !”
Lol !
FWIW, if TalkNats is reporting it — and I know they broke the news last night — it’s almost always on the money. Steve Mears over there has legit sources within and close to the organization (and is in touch with more than a few players, minor leaguers, and their family members). Also reporting Justin Connell heading down to Wilmington as one of the other moves, which makes sense as he has been striking out a ton since his promotion to Double-A and isn’t considered a top prospect.
Hopefully the other moves include Wood and Quintana moving up.
Put the cabash on Guasch
Tommy John or something does for 60 day shelving
Jacob Young deserves a promo to tandem with Mendez on base paths
Yasel Antuna is not really deserving of a promotion but this is still smart. He’s been clogging up a spot on the 40 man so this is very a sink or swim situation.
The conga line will be fascinating today. 2 from Fberg to Wilmington and 2 from the FCL to Fburg.
So if Wood does get promoted today, it’ll be in tandem with yet another prospect list update that sees his rocket up the list.
ESPN posted their updated top 50, and of relevance to us prospect watchers:
13: Wood
14: Abrams
16: Hassell
Interesting that House, Cavalli and Henry don’t feature, but in McDaniel’s start of the season top 100 ranking House was 41, Cavalli 65 and Henry not even listed, so Cavalli not featuring isn’t exactly a slight, and House has frankly earned a tumble down these lists.

Some good insight on Wood especially.
