Sorry for all the TBDs, but none of Sunday’s press releases indicated a starter for today. We do expect some shuffling about, but, like everything else, it’ll probably come much slower than folks here want.
Speaking of which, TalkNats is saying via the Twitters that C Israel Pineda is bound for City Isle. There is no word on the corresponding moves if any. Best guess: Brady Lindsly gets sent down, given that neither he (.618 OPS) nor anyone in Fredericksburg is tearing it up.
Below, you’ll see a little tea-leaf reading in the one full game that was played. This is nothing but pure speculation… just like anything and everything to do with the short-season leagues.
FCL Marlins 3 FCL Nationals 2
• Bry. Sanzhez 2⅔ IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K, WP
• Quintinilla 1⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• Geraldo 2-3, 2R, BB, E(8)
• Tomlin 2-4, 2-2B, 2RBI
Fielding a team with just two position players older than the league average, the F-Nats saw their 14-game winning streak end with a 3-2 loss to the F-Marlins. 19-y.o. Bryan Sanchez made his fourth straight start and went a season-high two and 2/3rds innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk. He was pinned with the loss while striking out three. 21-y.o. Angel Geraldo singled twice, scored twice, and walked once while 20-y.o. Quade Tomlin doubled in the first F-Nats run in the 7th and did it again in the 9th with two outs to lead the F-Nats attack. Roster moves: RHP Eris Filpo reassigned from Wilmington.
DSL Nationals 2 DSL Angels 1 – SUSP.
Rain stopped play with two outs in the top of the 3rd with the D-Nats leading 2-1. They’ll complete this on July 28, when the two teams next play each other.
Pineda looked interesting during his first couple of years of short-season ball, but he hasn’t been particularly good since then. His .264 average this season while repeating the level certainly is an improvement on .208 last year, but he’s still striking out 26% of the time. It’s hard to see a ceiling for him more than about Raudy Read (to whom he has been compared on the defensive side as well).
something or someone has gotten into him the last month, 12BBs vs 11Ks, OPS over 1.000.
if he performs anywhere close to that in AA he’ll be just fine.
Steely Dan Reeling in the years
… reading the tea leaves .. play it Skunk Baxter …
Frizzell to Fredericksburg per MILB.com
Paul Witt and Jose Atencio coming too
lots of activity today, Baker to AA is the most notable to me as of now

This was released on twitter by Nationals Player Development. We should be seeing some player releases soon due to roster limits
From milb.com. I changed some positions based on what I see in box scores (they have Merigildo as 3B, for example):
HBG
C Drew Millas to WIL
C Wilmer Perez to WIL
WIL:
C Jarret Gonzalez to Dev list
C Israel Pineda to HBG
2B Darren Baker to HBG
1B Omar Merigildo to HBG
LHP Michael Kirian to FRE
FRE:
RHP Todd Peterson to WIL
1B Leandro Emiliani to WIL
SS Junior Martina to WIL
FCL:
1B Will Frizzell to FRE
SS Paul Witt to FRE
RHP Jose Atencio to FRE
LF David Dahl signed to Minor League Contract
RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon signed to Minor League Comtract
as it stands right now FredNats trot out Denaburg, Lara, Rutledge, Aldonis and Atencio to the mound. Joel Hanrahan has some nice arms to work with
I wonder whether Bennett will go directly to FBurg.
It’s curious that they haven’t pushed Rutledge on up to A+. His pitching lines don’t really show that they should, but they’ve got to get a better read on him sometime, with Rule 5 eligibility fast approaching.
I’m glad they feel good enough about Darren Baker to keep promoting him, but I’m still not seeing a lot of ceiling there, particularly if he’s not SS-capable.
I’m intrigued by Will Frizzell, based on the big numbers he posted in the SEC last year. There’s so little legit power in this organization. But he turns 24 in February, so the age clock will be ticking fast on him.
Some batter movement! Better late than never?
Insert Kaopectate joke here.
Here’s the best ERA’s in the system (FRE and above). Who here (other than Cavalli) is a legit possibility to help at the MLB level?
A new name on this list is Garvin Alston, who is the son of a guy with who had a MLB cup of coffee – also name Garvin Alston.
