• Brill 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Palacios 3-4, R, CS
• Freeman 1-3, OF assist at 2B
Lehigh Valley got three in the 1st, which would be more than enough as the IronPigs smelted the Red Wings, 9-1. Sterling Sharp lost for the fourth time as he allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks over five and 2/3rds innings. Josh Palacios singled three times and scored once to account for half of Rochester’s six hits (all singles) as he extended his on-base streak to 18 games. Jake Noll also had a hit, pushing his hit streak to nine, as did Taylor Gushue, whose RBI single broke up the shutout and extended his hit streak to seven.
Harrisburg 5 Erie 2
• Kilome (W, 3-3) 8IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 8K

• Alu 2-4, R
• W. Garcia 1-3, R, BB, HR(GS)
Wilson Garcia’s grand slam in the bottom of the 8th broke a 1-1 tie and the Sens’ five-game losing streak as they beat the SeaWolves, 5-2. Franklyn Kilome went eight full innings and allowed the first Erie run on three hits. He walked none and struck out eight. Zach Brzykcy gave up the second SeaWolves run on a one-out HR. Gilbert Lara also homered – a solo HR in the 5th that tied the game at 1-1 – while Jackson Cluff and Jake Alu both had two hits in the eight-hit Harrisburg offense.
Winston-Salem 5 Wilmington 0
• Theophile (L, 1-2) 2IP, 1H, 4R, 3ER, 4BB, 0K, HBP, 59-28 PIT-K
• C. Romero 2IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 5K
• Méndez 3-4, 2B
• Baker 2-4, 2B
For the second straight start, Rodney Theophile couldn’t make it to 3rd inning while throwing more than 50 pitches in a 5-0 shutout loss by Wilmington. Theophile gave up four runs on one hit while walking four and hitting a batter over two innings. He did not strike out a batter. The Blue Rocks bullpen combined for six innings of one-run relief, but the Blue Rocks offense couldn’t push across a runner in 10 RISP chances. Darren Baker and Ricardo Méndez combined for five hits and two doubles with Yasel Antuna rounding out the six-hit assault with a single and José Sánchez drawing the lone walk.

• Emiliani 2-5, R, 2RBI
The FredNats rallied from 2-1 and 6-4 to tie and then busted the game open with four in the 8th for a 10-6 win over the Hillcats. Jackson Rutledge reverted to the mean, giving up all six Lynchburg runs on nine hits and three walks over four and a 1/3rd innings while fanning four. Orlando Ribalta worked around a hit in the 8th to earn his first win of the season. Jeremy De La Rosa fell a homer shy of the cycle while driving in three, including two on a triple in the 8th. Branden Boisserie and Leandro Emiliani both singled twice as Fredericksburg broke into double digits for the 12th time season and the third time this month.

A four-run 4th erased a 3-1 deficit as the F-Nats held on to take the opener, 5-4. 17-y.o. Gabriel Agostini tossed a season-high four innings but was dinged for three runs on six hits. He walked none and set down three on strikes. Armando Cruz and Rudy Martin both singled twice while Will Frizzell doubled in two to power the F-Nats attack.

Lowlighted by a four-run 9th, the D-Nats blew a 5-0 lead to lose to the D-Phillies Red, 6-5.
tough outing for Rutledge, spotty command from the start, he looked like he couldn’t get loose, shaking his shoulders all night.
still, they let him stay in to throw 95 pitches so he’s healthy and maybe can learn something from the experience. next outing will be important to see if he can bounce back
I 95 JFK pitch count
Best QS of guy on farm this summer Kilome last night ?
Reverted to the mean
Was at the game in Fredericksburg last night. 23 hits in the game – none of them home runs. I have never seen so many guys getting hurt by getting his by the baseball at the plate, behind the plate, and in the field – including Jacob Young (3 HBP), Infante (2 HBP), Lynchburg catcher, Lynchburg shortstop. Looked dangerous out there all night. Having a pitch clock adds to the struggle of pitching from a wet mound.
Jeremy De La Rosa CRUSHED the first pitch his first two times up with a hard single and a double off the wall in the RF corner. His game winning triple in the 8th was a hard grounder over the 1st base bag. He hesitated after reaching 2nd but still made it. It was nice to see Boissiere get a couple of hits – his OPS (690) is the highest it’s been, although it comes from the ability to draw walks (41).
Jackson Rutledge got his “tops at 98” badge by throwing a 98-mph pitch in the first inning, but the fastball was really 94-96. He kept that velocity through his 95 pitches. But there was plenty of hard contact. There was also a pitch at 89-90 he threw occasionally that I couldn’t classify. The curveball (< 80 mph) was thrown rarely, I think. I didn't see him missing bats with these secondary pitches. It seemed like the order of business was to get him stretched out to 95 pitches. He is imposing at 6 ft 8 in.
Brendan Collins was throwing 97-98 in his 2+ innings. (Lynchburg also had a couple of relievers throwing 98). There was an off-speed pitch in his arsenal, but it seemed like he was going deep into counts with everyone while pumping fastballs.
Thanks for the scouting report Nattering, I posted before seeing your info.
Rutledge should be in AA or AAA by now and he can’t even get Low A hitters out.
Rutledge reminds me of Alex Meyer (also 6’8″) in that his mechanics look awkward and too often it appears as though he’s steering the ball instead of driving through the delivery. That 89-90 pitch looked to me like a cutter or a poorly thrown two-seam FB.
Digging Collins
Luke post the picture of the two old cynics in the opera balcony being cynics
Reminds us of reviews of players lol
Oh the horrors! Zach Brzykcy has now allowed 1 earned run in 13 appearances at Harrisburg. His ERA has now skyrocketed to 0.64.
18 year old Armando Cruz’s OPS in June is now .971. Remember, he didn’t hit at all in the DSL last year with his OPS in the .500’s. He figuring it out. The glove is already there.
Ho hum, Jeremy De La Rosa was dominant again, not that the f.o. noticed. Malpractice!
Theophile threw a lot of good pitches the first two innings but the WS batters made him work for it. fouling off tough two strike pitches, not swinging at balls just out of the zone. the unearned run was because he dropped a toss at first that would have been the third out.
then in the third he was wild high, walking all three batters he faced and was yanked. seemed like a little bit of a quick hook but it’s fair to say he might have lost focus. there was also a ball on a pitch clock violation that inning
Fred MD are you watching on line to Will ?

Wilmington home games not available
Kilome gave up a triple to the first batter, but dominated after that. I can’t remember the last time I saw a starter go eight innings.
Erie brought in another reliever to face Garcia and he crushed the first pitch for the slam.
Brzykcy was 0-2 on the batter and tried to blow another fastball by him, but he hit it the opposite way for a homer. He has been impressive overall.
Kilome has certainly figured out how to throw more strikes. and for a guy that doesn’t strike out a ton he does get a good amount of swinging strikes. he’s still a flyball pitcher, however.
Any up date on Seth Shuman ?
having watched it he threw a pitch and grimaced. threw 4-5 more pitches with the ball floating up to the plate. looked like forearm or elbow related to my eye
I didn’t see the tell-tale “shake” but for all I know, he did do it but the camera was pointed at the trainer and the manager coming out to see him. One thing that truly sucks about MiLB.tv is that the production quality varies so widely between venues and even between cameras (this one’s HD, this one’s SD!)
true that!, once the ball’s in play forget about it. it’s also hard no to laugh out loud when they actually show a replay of the same video gibberish.
still, for $50 a season it’s hard to beat
The big thing with Alex Meyer is that the Nats got an honest internal appraisal of him and flipped him for good value before his faults became more widely known. They’ve been sorely lacking in recent years at honest internal evaluation.
