Rochester’s winless streak went to 12 with a 3-1 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Cade Cavalli tossed a quality start by the leanest definition, with three runs allowed over six innings, but was peppered with eight hits and walked five while striking out only four. He lost for the third time in three AAA starts. Jhon Romero and Aaron Barrett both put up a goose egg, but the Red Wings offense mustered just four hits and three walks. Victor Robles had the sole extra-base hit, a two-out double in the 5th.

K.J. Harrison homered in the 6th and doubled in the 8th to erase a 3-0 deficit and force extras, where the BaySox got five runs in the top of the 10th to take this one, 8-3. I’d tell you how the first, controversial scored in the top of the 10th, but MiLB.tv switched to a re-enactment of the “Sopranos” final scene. As best as I can tell from the audio that finally kicked in about 2½ minutes after the feed went to black and to silent, Aldrem Corredor fielded a grounder and fired to home then dropped the ball in the ensuing rundown between third and home after Bowie’s Zach Watson, who had begun the inning as the free runner and took third on a groundout, collided with Corredor and jarred the ball loose to score. When the video finally came back, there was no replay. Carson Teel then threw a wild pitch for the second Bowie run and gave up a single and three doubles for three more. Harrisburg then went in order in the 10th for their sixth straight loss.

Three Wilmington pitchers shut out Aberdeen for eight innings on three hits. The fourth? Not so much, as Zach Brzkcy coughed up a two-run HR to blow a 2-0 lead. He was awarded a win after Omar Meregildo connected for a three-run walkoff HR, his 15th of the season. Cole Henry got the start and struck out seven and allowed just two hits over five scoreless innings. He walked none and hit a batter in the no-decision. Andrew Pratt homered and doubled while Yasel Antuna doubled to lead off the 9th as the Blue Rocks got five hits and five walks on the night.

The F-Nats broke out for five in the 5th to erase a 1-0 deficit and cruised to a 6-1 win. Matt Merrill LaLooshed the first three innings with no runs, five walks, and five strikeouts and hit a mascot batter. Edward Urena went the next three, giving up a run on three hits and no walks. He struck out five while getting his first win of 2021. Leandro Emiliani’s three-run HR capped off the aforementioned 5th while Darren Baker walked once, scored once, drove in one, and singled twice to lead the Fredericksburg offense.

The FCL Nats answered the FCL Mets’ run in the 1st score with four in the 2nd, then added two more and held on for a 7-4 win. 11th Rd. pick Marc Davis got the start and let in a run on four hits and two walks over two and a 1/3rd. The win went to Kevin Rodriguez with two scoreless innings, with a walk and a hit batsman. Yoander Rivero and Brady “He’s a Brick” House both homered, combining for five RBI and two of the eight walks drawn while Andry Arias singled twice to lead the FCL Nats’ hit column.

  1. I am hoping Cavalli is just fatigued and that we will see better control next season. He definitely needs work and should not just be penciled in as a Nat starter for 22.

    House is amazing. I can’t wait to see him and Soto batting back to back.

    I root hard for the Nats to win, but if they stay in 5th, they have a legit shot at Elijah Green. Getting him and House back to back would be amazing. Both have serious power. Much like House, Green is showing some swing and miss. I would absolutely draft him though. It helps that they have two guys coming in Vaquero and Gutierrez that would easily be 1st rounders in this draft. I feel more comfortable taking the risk.

    1. Cavalli made his mark at High A and AA by making batters swing at balls out of the strike zone. That doesn’t work with the older players in AAA.
      It’s okay, this is a good learning experience for him. He’ll need a good 15 more starts in AAA to be ready for the show. Let’s hope the f.o. is smart and patient with him.

      Agree completely on House. Can’t wait to see him in Fredericksburg next year.

      1. I thought he struggled with walks at AA too. Either way, I hope you are right. He definitely has talent.

      2. Also, dreaming on House, Quintana, White, and Lile in Fburg next year with Lara.

        Vaquero, Gutierrez, Cruz, Agostini, and the 22 draft pick in FCL. Plus possible others from DSL like Rivas and Perez.

        Fingers crossed that draft and development gets better.

  2. In the FCL Nats game, why was Rodriguez awarded the win? The Nats went up 4-1 in the 2nd inning, and never relinquished the lead. Rodriguez pitched the 6th and 7th innings (when the Nats were winning 7-4), and should have gotten the save. Shouldn’t Davis, who pitched into the 3rd inning, or Sinclair, who pitched the 3rd to 5th, (if they use MLB rules that SPs must go 5 innings to get a win) been awarded the win?

      1. The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.

        Rule 10.17(c) Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher). Rule 10.17(b) Comment provides guidance on choosing the winning pitcher from among several succeeding relief pitchers.

        Unfortunately, IMO, they need to have similar clauses for holds and saves. I try to call that out by using terms like “rulebook” or “credited” or “cordero’d” when relief pitcher gets one of these despite not pitching well. Conversely, I think it’s specious to tag someone with a blown save any earlier than the 7th inning or a lead of only one run. This came up back in May when Pedro González coughed up three in the 6th when he was brought on to protect a 1-0 lead. Almost all four-inning saves in the minors are like the DSL game but in reverse, where the starter was clearly on a pitch count. Even in the majors most of those jobs are when there’s a blowout and the manager is trying to save the bullpen.

  3. Quintana is in! Batting 3rd between House and White and playing RF. His OPS is almost 400 points higher than House!

    Infante just homered, now the pitcher gets House, Quintana, White, and Frizzell. Lile off today.

  4. DSL Isle Nats manager enjoys some lefty / righty / switch hit variation up and down the line up with several kids learning new positions defensively . Interesting viewing within the boxscore
    Cavilli has shown his mettle this campaign . Next summer could be very interesting as Cole Henry in his zone even more than the trade deadline kids who should have the light switch flip .
    Imagine how many Nats fans will mushroom in OK with healthy / productive Cavilli and Irwin – Big Jake .
    And we haven’t even talked about the two Jackson’s or any lefties .
