MLB’s latest proposal, which seems hell-bent on returning on July 4 for the symbolism (pay no attention to the risks, which would be borne by the players, not the owners), all but concedes there will be no minor-league baseball in 2020. Nevertheless, there are plans being devised for reopening ballparks. For some reason, I’m reminded of this.
Syracuse 11 Rochester 0 – 2012
• Roark (W, 2-5) 6IP, 4H, 0R, BB, 6K
• Pena 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, K
• Hoffpauir 3-5, R, 3RBI
• Brown 2-3, 4R, 2B, HR, 2BB, 3RBI
• Howell 2-4, 2R, RBI
Tanner Roark bounced back from two horrid starts to combine with two relievers on an 11-0 shutout, the fourth straight win for Syracuse and fifth in a row vs. Rochester. Roark went six and gave up just four hits and a walk while setting down a half dozen on strikes. Corey Brown led the offense with four runs scored, three driven in, and six total bases.
Harrisburg 4 Reading 1 – 2015
• Ross (W, 2-1) 7IP, 7H, R, ER, BB, 5K
• Demny (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Goodwin 3-4, 2B, RBI
• Lisson 2-4, R, HR, 3RBI
Mario Lisson drove in three while Joe Ross tossed seven strong innings as the Sens beat the Phils, 4-1. Ross notched his fourth straight quality start with one run let in on seven hits and a walk while fanning five. Casey Janssen pitched a scoreless 8th for the hold while Paul Demny did the same in the 9th for the save. Brian Goodwin led the hit column with two singles and a double while Lisson singled and homered in four trips to the plate as Harrisburg pounded out 11 hits total on the night.
Potomac 7 Winston-Salem 2 (Comp.) – 2013
• Hill 4IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 4K
• Herron (W, 1-1) 3IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 4K
• Holt 2IP, 0H, R, ER, 4BB, 5K
• Nieto 2-4, 2R, 2B
• Keyes 1-3, R, HR, 3RBI
Potomac 7 Winston-Salem 1 (7 inn.) – 2013
• Schwartz (W, 3-1) 7IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 5K
• Miller 3-4, R, 2RBI
• Sanchez 2-3, R, 3RBI
• Burns 1-2, 2R, 2BB, 2SB (19, 20)
The P-Nats rolled seven twice on a Sunday Afternoon In Woodbridge.
Hagerstown 10 Charleston 8 (6 inn.) – 2018
• Alastre 4⅔ IP, 8H, 8R, 6ER, 3BB, 3K, 3HR, 3WP
• McKinney (W, 1-0) 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2-0 IR-S
• Scudder 3-4, R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Antuna 2-3, R, 2RBI, E(8)
• Corredor 2-4, 2RBI
The Suns solved their bullpen woes by not having to use more than one reliever, thanks to the rain that shortened the game to six innings for 10-8 win over the RiverDogs. Tomas Alastre was knocked from the box in the 5th after West Virginia lit him up for all eight runs on eight hits, including three longballs, and three walks. Jeremy McKinney stranded two by getting the last out of the 5th and pitched a scoreless 6th to earn the win. Every Hagerstown batter had a hit, with six having two or more. Jake Scudder led the hit parade with a single and two doubles and drove in two, as did Yasel Antuna and Aldrem Corredor.
Ah yes, Roark’s infamous 2012 season at Syracuse: 26 starts, 6-17 record, 4.39 ERA, 1.41 WHIP. The next year at the MLB level he was 7-1, 1.51 ERA, and 0.91 WHIP. We had a hard time believing he would be THAT good, and indeed he wasn’t, but he’s won 74 MLB games with a career 3.71 ERA.
The much better Syracuse prospect that year looked to be the great Corey Brown, with 25 HRs, .888 OPS, 144 wRC+. He never “made it,” though, or even came close. Dude had the baseball jones, however, playing 1,068 minor-league games (and hitting 182 HRs in them) in addition to 337 in the Mexican League (and another 55 HRs). His career totals across all levels of pro ball were 1,497 games, 6,085 plate appearances, and 249 HRs.
Don’t know why I thought to compare these two, and this may interest only me, but here goes: Roark has started one more MLB game than another slightly late bloomer, deGrom. deGrom has thrown 1.1 more MLB innings than Roark. deGrom, of course, is a favorite of the “wins don’t matter crowd,” and in fact Roark has eight more wins than deGrom, but also 15 more losses. deGrom has been much more efficient and faced 196 fewer batters than Roark. deGrom has struck out a staggering 365 more men than Roark, with a K/9 difference between the two of 3.0.

Where did I reference Jim Bowden? (*rimshot!*)
Ha!
Ha! We could have a long Bowden playlist, from “Eve of Destruction” to “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” (except for what he paid Smiley).
