The Chiefs broke out the bats, collecting a season-high 14 hits in a 9-1 triumph over Charlotte. Jeff Frazier, Adam Fox, and Jesus Valdez combined for nine hits (each doubling), four runs, and four RBI as the Chiefs score five runs in the 2nd and put up two-spots in the 3rd and 6th innings. Brad Meyers pitched six strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks. Collin Balester, Josh Wilkie, and Ryan Mattheus each tossed a scoreless inning in relief.

Brad Peacock took over from Oliver Perez as the suspended game was picked up and went six and 2/3rds innings for the win in a 7-6 Harrisburg victory. Derek Norris, Bill Rhinehart, and Alex VAldez each homered while Steve Lombardozzi and Tyler Moore both went 2-for-5. A four-run eighth, lowlighted by a three-run homer by Akron’s Jared Goedert off Cory VanAllen, made this game a lot closer than it should have been. Carlos Martinez got the final three outs in the ninth for his first save of 2011.

The ‘pen filled in and handled the second game admirably, with Ryan Tatusko going the first four innings, allowing the lone Akron run, and Jimmy Barthmaier going the last three innings to earn the win. The veteran trio of Devin Ivany, Tim Pahuta and Chris Rahl powered the offense, going 4-for-9 with four runs scored, a double (Rahl), a home run (Pahuta), a stolen base (Ivany) and five RBI.

The race to avoid last place is on with a four-game weekend series between the third-place P-Nats and the fourth-place Hillcats, with a doubleheader scheduled on Saturday.

Thunderstorms and tornado warnings delayed the game nearly two hours, ending Robbie Ray’s night after two innings, as the Asheville Tourists defeated the Hagerstown Suns 4-1 in 11 innings. Four relievers were used over the last nine innings, with Sam Brown taking the loss by surrendering three in the top of the 11th. The Suns managed just nine hits for the night, with Jason Martinson going 2-for-4 and scoring the lone run.

  1. Stat line of the year, Brad Meyers now has issued only 1 walk in 59+ innings of work. I have never even heard of a line like that. He has a 57:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Its hard for me to even fathom that.

    1. I couldn’t agree more, Meyers numbers are really breathtaking. It seems obvious that while he sat out last year with the foot injury, he kept learning his craft. Good for him; a great contrast to those pitchers with the million $ arms & the 10 cent control towers.

      Peacock just keeps rolling along, 9k’s in just 6+ innings.

  2. I suspected rain as the culprit for ending Ray’s night but could not find it anywhere until your post. Thanks for ending my mild panic attack.

    Meyers, Milone & Maya has got to be a marketing depts. non-dry dream in Syracuse.

  4. Man, Harper has really cooled off. I wonder what pitchers have learned about him that is working so well. Don’t throw the ball over the plate?

    1. But the good news is that his strikeout rate hasn’t jumped. It was ~25% in April. It’s about 17.5% thus far in May.

      1. Still think Rizzo making his pronouncement had an effect on Harper’s motivation. Rizzo kind of put a cold bucket of water on the kid’s fire.

  5. What more does Peacock have to do to earn a promotion to AAA? Or perhaps a better question is, what more does Ross Detwiler have to do to get placed on the DL to work on whatever is ailing him? Or, do you sit Stammen despite his great numbers and basically state that Peacock’s development is more important?

    Maybe the solution is to trade a starter (Marquis) and move up someone from AAA to make room.

    1. Although Zuckerman doesn’t think anyone is ready down in AAA … what games is he watching anyway probably Caps hockey reruns? Maya and Meyers look ready to me. Stammen right behind. Milone is also starting to make a move … and he’s your replacement for Detwiler until if and when with Solis.

      So, I suspect you are right about a trade for Marquis. The Riggleman alteracation should move that along quickly (Look what happened to Morgan?) with these Nationals. At least until someone like Knorr gets promoted as well.

      1. Multiple reports have Rizzo talking to the Rockies about Marquis after one of their starters went down with a blown elbow. He’s a known quantity for them, so this has a chance and it’e getting time to lets see what the youngsters can do. I’d rather see Meyers or Milone try the big club than watch Marquis again.

        Detwiler looks headed for the DL or AA right now.
