Thursday’s News & Notes

June 6, 2019
16 position players, 14 pitchers taken on Day 3 of the Draft. WaPo has the story.
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup
Fresno Won, 10-4 @ New Orleans, 8:00 p.m. Ross (0-0, 0.00) vs. B. Meyer (2-4, 6.95)
Harrisburg Lost, 7-5 vs. Binghamton, 7:00 p.m. Braymer (3-4, 2.63) vs. Wilson (0-1, 7.27)
Potomac OFF DAY vs. Lynchburg, 7:05 p.m. M. Peña (3-3, 7.21) vs. Garza (3-4, 5.01)
Hagerstown Lost, 3-0 @ Delmarva, 7:05 p.m. Adon (4-2, 2.86) vs. Vespi (3-3, 5.17)

Fresno 10 New Orleans 4
• Espino (W, 6-1) 5⅔ IP, 3H, 3R, 1ER, 0BB, 7K
• Kontos 1⅓ IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 2-1 IR-S
• Hernandez 2-5, 2R, 2HR (15,16), 4RBI
• Kieboom 2-4, R, 2-2B, BB, 2RBI
• Stevenson 2-5, 2R, 2RBI, SB

The Grizzlies got eight runs in the 4th and two in the 6th en route to a 10-4 frosting of the Baby Cakes. Paolo Espino won his third straight decision and sixth overall with three runs allowed (one earned) on three hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts. George Kontos, James Bourque, and Michael Blazek combined for three and a 1/3rd innings of relief with one unearned run (Bourque) two walks (alas, also Bourque) and five K’s. Yadiel Hernandez homered twice the 4th and drove in four while Carter Kieboom doubled twice, walked once, and plated two to lead Fresno’s 11-hit parade.

Binghamton 7 Harrisburg 5
• Mapes 5IP, 7H, 5R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, HBP
• Rosenthal (L, 0-1) 1IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Garcia 2-3, 2R, BB
• Marmolejos 2-4, 2RBI
• C. Taylor 2-4, 2K

Harrisburg and Binghamton traded punches for the first two innings before settling into a 5-5 tie through five. Tyler Mapes wobbled through those innings and gave up those runs (three earned) on seven hits, two walks, and one Victor Robles while striking out three. Then Trevor Rosenthal came in. His resurgence from Tuesday continued with two consecutive K’s… then the reversion to the mean came with a double and a homer that would be the eventual 7-5 outcome in favor of the Rumble Ponies. Luis Garcia (and Harrisburg) reached base for the third (and final) time in the 7th before Binghamton’s ‘pen slammed the door shut with nine outs over the next eight batters. Garcia, José Marmolejos, and Chuck Taylor each had two hits to lead the Harrisburg offense.

Potomac – OFF DAY
After a 5-2 road trip capped off by a sweep of Salem, the fourth-place Potomac Nationals opened up a 6½ game lead over the last-place Red Sox. The P-Nats return to Woodbridge tonight for the first of four against the third-place Hillcats, which will be followed by three against the Southern Division-leading Wood Ducks.

Lakewood 3 Hagerstown 0
• Alastre (L, 3-5) 6IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 5K, E(2)
• Perkins 1-3, 2B, 2K
• Daily 1-4, 2B

Lakewood completed the sweep of Hagerstown with another shutout, this one, 3-0 on two hits. Tomas Alastre gave up the first BlueClaw run on two hits and two errors (one by Jose Sanchez, the other by Alastre) over six inning to notch his fifth loss. Angel Guillen came on after Alastre and put the game away for Lakewood with two runs coughed up in the 7th. Cole Daily broke up the no-hitter with a one-out double in the 4th and was caught stealing third while Nic Perkins led off the 5th with a two-bagger and watched the next three batters fail to hit out of the infield. Ricardo Mendez was the final Suns baserunner with a two-out walk in the 8th.

I know this has nothing to do with the farm but Rosenthal is looking like the most overpaid person in America.

    Free Yadiel.

Tony Beasleys son drafted by Nats late day 3??

Speaking of Beer, Luke, Strohshein a great name. Strohs not being brewed anymore.
GCL infield rotation with Mendoza , Ahu and Strohs with Pogue , the Fresno State bulldog , the 2b from Texas State…
Randa should mix well with the Latin lefty bats such as Sanfler

A raised beer to Pena and Adon putting in some good work tonight.
Any word on Big Yuna healing from TJ?? He and Meijia would spice up the Potomac lineup

    Free Yadiel, set free Rosey!

Agree on Yadi, but I’d give Rosen one more chance. The Nats are desperate

  4. KW says:

The Rosey decision is going to be interesting. My understanding is that they have to put him on the 25-man by Sunday or DFA him. I guess theoretically they could also trade him for a couple of broken bats, but it’s very hard to see them getting any team to take on that combo of big salary and bad performance.

I’ll confess, I thought the Rosenthal signing was a good one and that he’d really help solidify the bullpen. Shows what little Rizzo and I know!

They should have signed Greg Holland

Somebody on radio has to cue up the Bogart voice from African Queen when discussing Rosie… the nickname on Hepburn character was .. Rosie..

Unfortunately, the Sens ballpark radar gun is broken so we can’t see how fast Rosenthal is throwing. The HR was to the opposite field by a .224 hitter. Sunday is coming fast and a decision will have to be made. I would assume they’ll give him another try considering the millions they are paying him!

    1. SaoMagnifico says:

The real question is how many more Rosenthal-induced losses the Nats can afford. That’s got to be part of the calculus.

  6. Pilchard says:

Given their respective performances this year, pretty amazing that by Sunday, Trevor Rosenthal will likely be back with the Nats, and Yadiel Hernandez essentially has no shot at getting called up.

A punch in the nuts for those of us that follow the Nats farm. Not a meritocracy.
