Albuquerque 5 Fresno 3
• Voth (L, 3-3) 5IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 7K, HR, HBP
• Hoover 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, WP
• Gushue 3-3, R, HR, 2RBI, HBP
• J. Wilson 2-4, RBI
Austin Voth took a wrong turn with Albuquerque in the 3rd in Fresno’s 5-3 loss to drop back to .500. Voth gave up three runs on a HR and six hits total over five innings as he lost for the third time. He walked one and struck out seven. After two scoreless from J.J. Hoover, Jordan Mills gave up two more in the 8th to put the game out of reach. Taylor Gushue reached base four times on two singles, a HR, and a Victor Robles while Jacob Wilson singled twice. The rest of the lineup went 1-for-26 with three walks (two by Carter Kieboom) and a stolen base (Alec Keller, who was the “1” out of the 26).
Roster move: IF Jake Noll optioned from Washington.
Hartford 2 Harrisburg 1
• Tetreault (L, 1-1) 6IP, 7H, 2R, 0ER, 0BB, 6K
• Rosenthal 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Ward 1-3, 2B, BB, K
• Barrera 1-3, BB, RBI, K
The Senators had just one more hit than errors, which even FP knows is a formula for a loss – 2-1 to the Yard Goats. Both Hartford runs were unearned and were abetted by three errors on a single play that turned one out and one on at first into one out, one in, and a runner on third. A subsequent single made it 2-0 and a loser of Jackson Tetreault, who still registered a quality start of two runs on seven hits, no walks and six whiffs over six innings. It only took six weeks and six appearances, but Trevor Rosenthal notched his first clean inning of the 2019 season in the 7th against the Yard Goats’ 7-8-9 hitters. Tres Barrera singled in Ian Sagdal in the 6th to break up the shutout as he and Drew Ward were the only two Harrisburg batters to reach base twice. The Sens had five hits, three walks, and 14 batting strikeouts. Roster moves: RHP Trevor Rosenthal assigned from Washington for MLB Rehab.
Wilmington 2 Potomac 1
• Borne (L, 1-1) 6IP, 4H, 2R, 1ER, 0BB, 8K
• Bogucki 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Banks 3-4, R, HR, RBI
• Corredor 2-4, 2B
Wilmington was outhit 8-5 but outscored Potomac, 2-1 to tie the series at 1-1. Grant Borne went six innings for the first time in ’19 and was charged with both Blue Rocks runs on four hits and no walks. He fanned a career-high of eight. A.J. Bogucki shut things down the rest of the way but the P-Nats couldn’t push across the equalizer, with Cole Freeman thrown out trying to score from 1st on a double to left with one out in the 6th as the last true threat to score.
Delmarva 3 Hagerstown 0
• Peguero (L, 1-2) 5IP, 3H, R, ER, 3BB, 8K
• Day 3IP, 1H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K
• Rhinesmith 1-2, 2BB, SB
• Meregildo 1-3, 2B, BB
The clutch hit eluded the Suns as they couldn’t get one in ten chances and left on 11 in a 3-0 shutout loss to Delmarva. Francys Peguero saw his quality start streak stopped at three but still went five or more with two or fewer earned runs for the sixth time in seven starts. He was rewarded with his second loss despite tying his season-high of eight whiffs. Jacob Rhinesmith singled once and walked twice while Omar Meregildo walked and doubled to lead Hagerstown’s four-hit, six-walk effort.
Guess now we know why the Nats signed Parra–they were in desperate need of a lefty bench bat, and I would guess that Adams isn’t going to be returning anytime soon. Amazingly, the Nats are getting a lot more solid performances from their minor league pitchers than the hitters this year–excepting from most of those toiling in that video game league. When Taylor Gushue starts to resemble Carlton Fisk at the plate, you know those numbers are not to be trusted.
Regarding Rosenthal. I just wonder how long it is going to take Rizzo to finally pull the plug if he doesn’t look any better when he returns. Looks like Tanner Rainey has finally figured out how to use a joystick, and could be pushing for a call up fairly soon. Borque’s is also making a strong case for promotion. Suddenly, the team actually has potentially viable in house relief options.
The one performance I was most anxious to see was Tetreault and he came through with another terrific outing. No walks!
Good for Borne after coming back from injury. 8 it’s and no walks.
Totally agree with KK about finally seeing some pitching bubbling up.
Running theme yesterday of good Nats starting pitching going unrewarded. Sure looked like the same thing was happening in Los Angeles before Juan Soto and Gerardo Parra stepped up.
I watched most of Tetreault’s start. He looked really good, threw strikes and reached back for 95 mph several times when he needed it. The scouting report on him for a couple years suggested that if he could increase his velo a couple ticks, he could make a jump; at this point, 22 and looking strong in Double-A, I expect him to be in our organizational top-ten at midseason.
Thanks, Sao for the scouting report. Exciting stuff.
Menhart knows the internal pitching options well. Might lead to an unexpected call-up or two.
Impressive outing by MCGowin in hot PCL home cooking climate
We will take one run games at all levels since the odds favor the Nats 7 out of ten times
Everybody call their mothers ??
And wives ?
Interesting bookkeeping move by Nats. Two latest Latin arms in auburn scrolls
