Whether it was luck or clutch, Syracuse scored all nine runs last night with two outs, sweeping the series with Norfolk with a 9-4 decision. Starter Ross Detwiler gave up four first-inning runs, but settled down to go the five required for the win, allowing five hits, four walks, and setting down three on strikes. Four relievers combined for four scoreless and hitless innings of relief. Michael Aubrey drove in four as the the Chiefs collected 10 hits for the night.

Oliver Perez made his season debut with five-plus innings of work in the first game of a would-be doubleheader as the Sens won, 3-1. The erstwhile LHP alowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Cory VanAllen and Hassan Pena combined for the final two innings, earning the hold and save respectively. Archie Gilbert paced the offense with two of the seven hits. After a 3:31 delay, the second game of the doubleheader was postponed. No word yet as to when/where the game will be made up.

After a two-hour-plus rain delay, Potomac launched six HRs and pounded the Frederick Keys to the tune of 14-6. Three Nationals had their first HR of the season (Peacock, Lozada, Perez) in support of starter Danny Rosenbaum, who was not sharp with all six Frederick runs charged to him on seven hits and four walks. Adam Olbrychowski broke his string of poor outings with a rulebook save of three and a 1/3rd innings of scoreless relief.

For the second straight date, rain turned a doubleheader into a shortened game as the Kannapolis Intimidators ran the Suns into the wall, 6-1 in six innings. A.J. Cole took the loss with all five runs allowed (two earned) on six hits, but struck out five and walked none. Blake Kelso and Randolph Oduber were the only Suns to get a hit, as Hagerstown had more hits than runs and more errors than hits. Bryce Harper went 0-for-3 with a strikeout to end his on-base streak at 25 games.
not meaning to nitpick but wouldn’t all saves be considered rulebook saves.
That’s a reference to pitching effectively three or more innings as opposed to retiring the last batter with the tying run(s) on base, at the plate, or on deck with a lead of three or less runs.
and a unique one at that.

Sue, it looks like you lost April for the season again. Hope there’s no repeat of that polar bear incident from last year. 🙂
Glad to see Mattheus showing no blip from the promotion. Does anyone know how serious the Lehman injury is? The next move is him to Harrisburg & Manno to Potomac.
Can Aubrey play a decent 1B? If the big club isn’t going to put Morse there while Roche continues to stink (his shoulder probably doesn’t hurt anymore, but it’s more that there’s a loss of strength and integrity of the joint; I had the same injury 5 years ago and it took me a year to be able to swing hard again with confidence) then maybe Aubrey could be called up? I don’t know our 40 man roster, I’m sure he’s not on it though. He’s mainly DH’ing in ‘Cuse.
He hit .289 in 90 MLB ABs in 2009.
I’d defer to Peric on that one, but the reason he’s DHing most certainly has more to do with the big club wanting Chris Marrero to get defensive reps than his defensive abilities.
That’s my assumption as well. And let’s stick with it, because it is smart and would mean the front office has some smart people in it 🙂
Sue is right. And so Aubrey has been playing a lot of left field. Knorr is trying to get the guys who are hitting in the lineup. In one game he had catcher Johonatan Solano playing 2nd. (He plays there in winter ball apparently?). Marerro is getting most of the reps at first base and he appears to be progressing just as he has at each level in the minors offensively. Everyone seems to feel his defense has markedly improved. I suspect that is the result of some really hard work.
As for Aubrey on the big club? Seems unlikely unless he consistently hits .400 and puts up 10+ homers before the All Star break. Then, whether Riggleman likes it or not …
LaRoche is the guy Riggleman prefers, after that its going to be Stairs then … maybe Morse if Morse ever gets out of Riggleman’s doghouse where Ladson says he currently resides? Riggleman might also try Ivan Rodriguez at first base.
I suspect folks would see that before they’d see Ramos at first. Ramos needs the reps and they did try IRod there briefly in ST.
I’m sitting here wondering what Riggleman is going to do if Stairs gets on base? Riggleman almost always pinch runs for the guy because he got picked off once!!!?? Its not like Stairs is going to take a huge lead … he must be that slow. It seems kind of ridiculous to use him as a DH or for anything for that matter but that is what Riggleman is going to do. If anyone has an answer for this conundrum I would be much obliged to hear it.
Personally, I am pretty tired of watching Reruns of a famous situation comedy. Kind of like how Syracuse is handling the exact same problem. In fact Syracuse had scored the fewest runs of any professional baseball team at one point. Can the Nats do the same and salvage the season before its too late? IMHO, Not with Jim Riggleman at manager. Randy Knorr appears to be a different sort of manager.
Plus there’s the notion of Bradley Peacock joining the Syracuse rotation? If Solis moves up fast and with Oliver Perez apparently doing okay in Harrisburg … who knows maybe Wang will end up in Harrisburg as well. The loss of Kimball hasn’t affected the bullpen as Ryan Mattheus is pitching lights out … its been a long wait for that boy. You can see and feel progress being made!!!
But with the Nats just the opposite.
Peric, I’ve been saying a version of this for a long time now. Mike Rizzo has done wonderful things with the draft, the instructional part is going very well and they have some great coaches down on the farm. But ……………………….. I guess the term is ‘he’s learning on the job’ when it comes to the majors. (Was that polite enough?).
With the big league club it really looks a lot like ‘Amateur Hour’.
