Read’s suspension sidelined him until mid-June and limited him to just 53 games, in which his SLG% dropped 20 points but his BA rise and OBP rose by roughly the same margin. With pressure from several catchers below and Spencer Kieboom still having options left, it’s not hard to envision him repeating AA again, if not being DFA’d like Kieboom was in 2017. | |

Defensively, Barrera is what “El Tamiz” Read is not: quick, athletic, soft hands, etc. Plus, he throws out runners at strong clip (49% CS in ’18). What’s held back Barrera is that he’s been forced to split time with other catchers his entire professional career, and with the glut of catching prospects, that might not change in 2019. | |

Pineda signed for $450K as part of the Nats’ 2016 Class of IFAs and has been a favorite in the comments since 2017, when he posted a .764 OPS in 17 games. He moved up to the NYPL last summer and his production dropped slightly (.738) in 46 games. Pineda suffered a broken hand in late August, which the Nats hid by not putting him on the DL. | |

Wilmer Perez Born: 4/16/98 Ht. 5’10” Wt. 186 Bats: R Throws: R Career Stats |
One of last year’s “DSL Guys,” Perez rose all the way to the NYPL by the end of the (short) season. While his playing time was limited, he still managed to hit (.339) and get on base (.388) at a decent clip, so [insert Raudy Read comp here] pay no attention to those five errors and ten passed balls in just 20 games on defense. |
