GCL Nationals Lost, 6-0 vs. GCL Astros, 12:00 p.m.

Syracuse – OFF DAY
After a 4-3 road trip, the Chiefs return home for seven – three against the Iron Pigs, then four against the Red Wings – in their penultimate homestand of 2018.

Reading 7 Harrisburg 6
• Fedde (L, 0-1) 4IP, 4H, R, ER, 2BB, 4K
• J. Romero 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, HBP
• Kieboom 2-4, R, 2B, BB, 2RBI
• Ward 2-4, 2R, 2B, HR(10), 2RBI
• Davidson 2-2, R, RBI

On the 12.2% chance the big Nats make the playoffs, Erick Fedde was sent to Harrisburg last night for a rehab appearance. He turned in a respectable outing of one run over four innings on four hits and two walks with four whiffs, but the Senators’ bats were AWOL until the 6th and fell one run short, 7-6. Drew Ward doubled, homered, scored twice, and drove in two, as did Carter Kieboom with a singled and a double, to lead the Harrisburg offense. Roster moves: RHP Erick Fedde assigned from Washington for MLB Rehab.

Potomac – OFF DAY
The P-Nats and Hillcats will play each other over the next six games (three in Lynchburg, three in Woodbridge; weather permitting) in what might be a preview of the C.L.D.S. as Lynchburg leads the 2nd-half race by 5½ games with 15 to go. Roster moves: C Adderling Ruiz reassigned from Hagerstown.

Hagerstown 7 Columbia 0
• Held (W, 5-6) 7IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 5K
• Ja. Johnson 2IP, 2H, 0R, 3BB, 1K, WP
• Scudder 3-4, 3RBI
• Freeman 2-4, 2R, 2-2B, RBI
• Meregildo 2-4, 2R, 2HR, 2RBI

Two Hagerstown pitchers combined on four-hit, 7-0 shutout of Columbia. Sam Held gave up two hits and walked one over the first seven innings while striking out five. Jared Johnson walked three but neither hit he allowed could push a runner across. Omar Meregildo homered twice to push his August line to .367/.412/.583 (13G) while Jake Scudder, who’s also been hot in August (.316/.385/.456, 16G) collected three hits and three RBI to lead the Suns’ attack. Roster moves: C Alex Dunlap activated from the 7-Day DL; C Joey Harris placed on the 7-Day DL.

Mahoning Valley 8 Auburn 2
• Tapani (L, 0-2) 2IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 1K, HR
• A. Hernandez 4⅓ IP, 3H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 8K, WP, BK
• Rhinesmith 1-4, 2B, 2K
• Shaddy 1-4, R, 2B, RBI

The Scrappers trashed three Doubledays pitchers to take the first game of the series, 8-2. Ryan Tapani lost for the second time as he gave up three runs on five hits and two walks over the first two innings. Auburn was held to five hits and drew no walks. Jacob Rhinesmith and Carson Shaddy both doubled for the only two extra-base hits.

GCL Cardinals 6 Nationals 0
• P. Gonzalez (L, 1-2) 5IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, HBP
• Turner 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Chisholm 1-3, 3B, BB
• Sanfler 1-4, 2B

The G-Cards continued their domination of the G-Nats with a 6-0 shutout. Pedro Gonzalez lost despite a throwing five innings of two-run ball on one hit and two walks. He struck out four. Blake Chisholm tripled and walked while Caldioli Sanfler doubled but the rest of the lineup mustered just three singles,

The good Romero seems fine in AA.
Carter Kieboom is making it a lot easier for the Nats to say goodbye to Daniel Murphy.

With nine hits over his last five games, Cole Freeman has his average up to .250. I imagine that both he and the organization were disappointed that he wasn’t able to move up this season, but at least he’s finishing strongly. His calling cards are 27 doubles, 24 SBs, and a K/9 of only 11.7%. He also has a good walk rate of 8.9%. I’m still not sure what they saw in him to make him a 4th-round pick, or that he’s significantly better than the Shaddy/Daily/Marinconz crop from 2018, but he’s at least going to end up with a respectable season.

I guess the leader in being in the DL listvthe longest is between Jason Martinson and Joey Harris
    N. Gomez is a true starter or bullpen stretch experiment ?
Seattle or Angels claimed Murphy ?? Boston ?

Luke ty for all you do and have done with this site aside from all your life duties away from site
I don’t blame you for leaving ” scrimmage ” level play in GCL/ DSL to us junkies to read between the lines from box scores.
Kudos to Derek Self reaching Cuse
Still want to see Falu get a Sept look if Murphy moved

Agreed now that I see his age
Danny Hernandez keeps hitting in DSL playing three positions in infield

Sorry if this is covered, but I can’t see any other posts until the next day (weird):

Nats have two open roster spots with Murphy and Adams dealt away. Would guess Sanchez or Reynolds will get one spot; Robles the other?

    1. Jeff says:
      August 21, 2018 at 3:16 pm

      Cash for Adams ??
Time to hit baseball – reference on Andruw Monestario ( same birthplace as Andruw Jones) ?

    2. Jeff says:
      August 21, 2018 at 3:31 pm

The Lerners are loaded and brass concerned about 5 million ??
Monestario should slide into Keister infield rotation . Fringe guy?

    3. Jeff says:
      August 21, 2018 at 5:05 pm

Sounds like Rizzo and Epstein have agreed upon the second player but mums the word for now.
Imagine if Rizzo brings up the second teenager to go with Soto for stretch run.

    4. Jeff says:
      August 21, 2018 at 7:11 pm

      Stevenson and Sanchez up
Who gets written into the Sept 1 callups ? Marmelos ? Robles ( or no on the arb. Clock start up ?) Y Hernandez ? Sierra ? Falu ? That’s too many.

  8. Will says:

Imagine what the Nats could have asked for Murphy with potentially 28 other teams outbidding the other.

I’m a huge fan of Rizzo but he’s completely botched the last two seasons.
