GCL Nationals OFF DAY @ GCL Mets, 10:00 a.m.

Syracuse 8 Columbus 3
• McGowin 6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 8K, HR, WP
• Adams 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Robles 4-6, 2R, 2B
• Marmolejos 2-5, R, 2B, 4RBI

The Chiefs got four hits from Victor Robles and four RBI from Jose “Orange” Marmolejos, three on a bases-clearing double to highlight a five-run 9th. Roster moves: RHP Derek Self reassigned from Harrisburg; RHPs Jimmy Cordero, Jefry Rodriguez recalled to Washington; RHP Trevor Gott optioned from Washington.

Akron 5 Harrisburg 1
• Darnell (L, 7-6) 5⅓ IP, 6H, 3R, 1ER, 1BB, 5K
• R. Mendez 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Noll 2-4
• Ward 1-2, R, 2B, BB

Harrisburg avoided a shutout but not the loss, 5-1 to Akron to even the series at 1-1. Logan Darnell went the first five and a 1/3rd innings and gave up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out give but lost for the sixth time. The point was moot as the offense managed just five hits and two walks while fanning 12 times. Jake Noll (two singles) and Drew Ward (double, walk) were the only two Senators to reach base twice.

Potomac 3 Carolina 2
• Baez 2IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 1K
• Guilbeau 3⅓ IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 1K
• Howard (W, 3-1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 3BB, 1K
• Garcia 2-4, R, 2B
• Sagdal 2-4, R, RBI

The Mudcats got to Joan Baez for two runs in the 2nd after a 66-minute rain delay but the P-Nats bullpen shut ’em down to enable a 3-2 comeback win. After facing the minimum in the 1st (issued a walk, but got a DP), Baez was dinged for two runs on two hits and two walks in the 2nd. Taylor Guilbeau, Hayden Howard, and Jacob Condra-Bogan combined for seven shutout innings, with Howard picking up his third win and Condra-Bogan his first save for Potomac. Luis Garcia and Ian Sagdal both went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Jakson Reetz and Jack Sundberg both hit sacrifice flies to pace the offense.

Columbia 14 Hagerstown 6
• Lee (L, 4-3) 4⅓ IP, 3H, 6R, 6ER, 5BB, 6K, HR
• Smith 2⅔ IP, 7H, 8R, 8ER, BB, 2K, 2HR, 2-2 IR-S
• Flores 3-3, R, 2B, BB, HR, 2RBI
• Freeman 2-4, 2R, 2-2B, BB, RBI, SB
• Franco 2-4, 3RBI

Hagerstown was held to two field goals and gave up two touchdowns for a 14-6 loss to Columbia. Andrew Lee’s control issues resurfaced as he issued five free passes in four and a 1/3rd innings while striking out six. He only gave up three hits, but one of ’em was an Earl Weaver special. David Smith may have been an all-star but did not have his game on, as the Fireflies lit him up for eight runs on seven hits, including two homers, in his Sally Lg. debut. He also allowed both inherited runners to score. Alejandro Flores missed the cycle by a triple and drove in two while Cole Freeman walked once, doubled twice, scored twice, and stole his 24th base to lead the Suns’ attack. Roster moves: LHP Seth Romero placed on the 7-Day DL; LHP Jackson Stoeckinger promoted from Auburn.

Auburn 4 Batavia 2
• Schaller 5IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Barrett (W, 2-0) 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Pineda 2-4, R, HR, 3RBI
• Blash 1-3, R

The Doubledays survived a late charge from the Muckdogs to win 4-2 and improve to 35-25 – best in the NYPL. Reid Schaller one-hit Batavia for five innings without a walk and four K’s. The “W” went to comeback kid Aaron Barrett, who worked around two hits and fanned three over two scoreless innings. Israel Pineda’s three-run HR in the bottom of the 6th. In the 7th, Jamori Blash came all the way home from 1st base on Nic Perkins’s single to right field to account for the Auburn offense. Roster moves: RHP Jake Irvin, LHP Alfonso Hernandez reassigned from the GCL.

GCL Nationals – OFF DAY
Six games remain in the 2018 GCL Season and the G-Nats would have to run the table just to finish .500, which seems a bit unlikely. Catching the G-Mets for third place (they play today) or staying ahead of the G-Marlins (they play on Wednesday) to avoid finishing last seems a bit more likely.

DSL Nationals Update
The D-Nats doubled up the D-Yankees 12-6 yesterday to get back to .500 at 33-33 with six games left to play, including a doubleheader tomorrow. The D-Nats have not had a winning season since 2014, when they finished 40-30, 8½ games behind the D-Red Sox for third place in the Boca Chica Division. You may recognize a few of the names from that team.

I must confess that my Buddy who is a Mets fan made this comment to me a few months ago : the Nats will not overcome their injury woes. So true.
In a year the big club is third place their NYPenn league is imitating the 2017 big club
Yes Luke a few names from DSL will elevate next year for sure .

Luke. The line about big club not being able to shake injury woes applies to overpaid Seth Romero , who must be getting shelved for various reasons
I don’t recognize the 17 year old Dany Rojas LF/ LHP on current DSL roster ( still a kid in academy language school and nutrition class? Like many of the names signed in last two names competing for Sandy Martinez??)

Is it crazy to ponder about Aaron Barrett being in camp competition as a non roster invitee for the 6-7 role next March??
I am an echo chamber to some on here: Kyle McGowin , hmmm.
Irving Falu should get a Sept cup of coffee with Max and guys especially IF Murphy traded .

Hi all, I took a look at the 2013 GCL Nationals who went 49-9. The stats can be found at http://www.thebaseballcube.com/teams/stats.aspY=2013&T=11059

The pitchers with the 2nd and 3rd most IP were Wander Suero and Jefry Rodrieguez, who make their MLB debuts this year. Phillips Valdez, now contributing at AAA, was 4th. Travis Ott was 6th, was traded and is now at AA. Lucas Giolito started 8 games and Nick Pivetta started 3 games.

Rafael Bautista, Raudy Read, Jose Marmolejos and Drew Ward were in the top 6 in AB’s.

I’m not sure how this “yield” for the MLB team and farm system compares with other GCL teams, but the signifiance may be that it was the first wave of international talent after the Smiley Gonzalez fiasco. (By the way, Smiley appears in the 2013 GCL Nationals stats under his real name and age).
