Syracuse 7 Toledo 1
• Valdez (W, 5-7) 7IP, 6H, R, ER, 2BB, 7K
• Adams 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Marmolejos 1-5

Erie 5 Harrisburg 3
• Long 5⅓ IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K, WP
• R. Pena (L, 1-2) ⅔ IP, 0H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K, WP
• Mills ⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, 2-2 IR-S
• Keller 1-3, R, 2B, BB
• Kieboom 1-3, R, BB, E(10)

It wouldn’t be a night in the Nats organization without the bullpen coughing up a lead or tie right after the offense gave them one. After tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the 8th, Ronald Pena walked two batters to start the bottom of the 8th and then got two outs. Jordan Mills came on to face a lefty and gave up the game-winning, two-run triple to pin the Sens’ 5-3 loss to the Seawolves on Pena. Jaron Long started and pitched into the sixth, giving up the first three runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning four. The Harrisburg offense took advantage of two Erie errors to squeeze three runs out of five hits and two walks. Carter Kieboom and Alec Keller both reached base twice while going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Myrtle Beach 4 Potomac 3
• Tetreault 5+ IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 7K
• Acevedo (BS, 3; L, 1-2) 1⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 2K
• Banks 3-3, BB, RBI
• Masters 2-3, R, 2B, BB
• 2-13 RISP, 9 LOB

Jackson Tetreault struck out seven in his Carolina League debut but the Potomac offense, which generated one run Tuesday night over two games, could only muster three last night as they fell to Myrtle Beach, 4-3. Tetreault walked two and gave up five hits over five-plus innings, including three straight singles to load the bases with nobody out in the 6th. Carlos Acevedo kept one of those three runs from scoring to blow the save and then gave up two more runs of his own in the 7th to take the loss. Nick Banks reached base four times with three singles while David Masters singled, doubled, and walked to lead the P-Nats attack.

Hagerstown 8 Lexington 3
• Held (W, 4-6) 6IP, 5H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 5K, HR
• J. Johnson (SV, 1) 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 5K
• Upshaw 3-5, 2R, RBI
• Meregildo 2-3, 2B, HBP, SF, 3RBI
• Flores 2-4, 2R, HR, RBI

A five-run 2nd was the key to the Suns 8-3 win over the Legends. Sam Held made the spot start and made it a quality one with all three Lexington runs allowed on five hits, with no walks and five whiffs over six innings. Jared Johnson also fanned five over the final three to earn the save, his first. Armond Upshaw led the 12-hit parade with three singles while Alejandro Flores homered and scored twice to lead the Hagerstown offense. Roster moves: LHP Seth Romero removed from witness protection, IF Anderson Franco activated from the 7-Day DL; LHP Tim Cate, RHP David Smith promoted from Auburn.

Auburn 7 Mahoning Valley 6 – GAME ONE
• Stoeckinger (W, 3-1) 5⅔ IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 8K, HR
• Perkins 1-3, R, HR(GS), 4RBI
• O’Connor 1-3, R, 2B, BB, RBI
• Jo. Sanchez 2-3, RBI

Nic Perkins’s grand slam highlighted a five-run 3rd as Auburn survived a bullpen meltdown (wait, what?) to win the opener, 7-6. Jackson Stoeckinger pitched into the 6th with three runs allowed on five hits, including a solo HR. He walked two and struck out eight. Nector Ramirez got the last out of the 6th and careered through the 7th with three runs let in on three hits and a walk.

Auburn 6 Mahoning Valley 3 – GAME TWO
• Tapani 3IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 3K
• Adon (W, 1-0) 2IP, 3H, R, ER, 2BB, 2K, HR
• C. Wilson 2-4, R, 2B, 2RBI, OF assist at 2B
• O’Connor 2-4, R, 2B, RBI
• Carrillo 2-4, RBI

It was another big inning in the 3rd, this time the Doubledays getting four as they completed the sweep of the twinbill, 6-3 to tie Mahoning Valley for 1st place in the Pinckney Division. Ryan Tapani got the start but was knocked for two runs on six hits over the first three innings. Joan Adon gave up a leadoff HR in his second inning of work but was credited with the win as Aaron Barrett and Gilberto Chu each made a donut for the hold and save respectively. Cody Wilson, Pablo O’Connor, and Aalberto Carrillo each went 2-for-4 to lead Auburn’s 10-hit, four-walk offense. Roster move: RHP Niomar Gomez reassigned from the GCL.

GCL Nationals 10 GCL Cardinals 0
• C. Romero 4IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 4K
• A. Hernandez (W, 2-0) 4IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 6K
• Pogue 2-3, R, 3BB, RBI, E(14)
• Peroni 1-2, 2R, 2B, 3BB
• Senior 1-4, R, 2B, BB, SB

Three G-Nats pitcher combined on a four-hit, 10-0 shut of the G-Cards. Carlos Romero tossed four scoreless in his stateside debut, giving u two hits and a walk while striking out four. Alfonso Hernandez also put on three baserunners over four inning but struck out six to earn the win. Colton Pogue and Anthony Peroni both walked three times to lead the G-Nats attack.

Really puzzled by some of these recent promotions.

Niomar Gomez has a 8.24 ERA in GCL!

Then Cate and Smith are a bit curious too. Both haven’t been nearly as bad as Gomez. At first glance, Smith has been very good (1.71 ERA), but his K and BB numbers aren’t impressive (19 and 10 in 26 IP). Cate has the pedigree that Smith lacks, but his numbers have been very pedestrian (4.65 ERA, 26 K, 10 BB, 1.42 WHIP in 31 IP).

I would have thought guys like Aaron Barrett, Aaron Fletcher, Angel Guillen, Jackson Stoeckinger, Ryan Tapani or Carson Teel would have warranted a closer look. With that said, it seems some of the 2018 draft picks like Fletcher, may have hit this annual innings limit and have been shut down (Fletcher hasn’t pitched since August 7).

Also, that has to be the strangest pitching box score I’ve ever seen for Toledo. 8 pitchers, none of whom threw more than 1.2 IP, combined to throw 9 innings. Do they not have a long man in relief? Are they doing a 4 man rotation, where every 5th start the bullpen handles the entire game?

Weird to see such an overmanaged bullpen in a game that wasn’t very close at all.

      Knorr the former catcher
Gomez may have something the brass wants to see
Whatever became of Felix Tavares who sat on auburn last summer but has been in XST/ TBD list all summer, Luke?

Well. Held seems like the guy to pair @ back end of rotation starts with Tim Cate while Smith bolsters pen

Oops. Held back to pen with Romero out of WP ??

If Seth Romero was really hurt, why didn’t he make any rehab starts? Inquiring minds want to know!

Very good A+ debut for Tetreault. In his last four starts, he has struck out 8, 8, 11, and 7.
