Desmond on Paternity Leave, Bernadina Recalled
Congrats to the Nats' soon-to-be Daddy
Today the Washington Nationals placed SS Ian Desmond on the PL — Paternity Leave — List and recalled OF Roger Bernadina from Syracuse to take his spot on the roster. Desmond is allowed up to three days leave for this newly created roster maneuver, which has also been used by the Texas Rangers’ Colby Lewis earlier this year.
UPDATE: Erik Arnesen has been assigned from Harrisburg to Syracuse, presumably taking Bernadina’s place. At Potomac, Alex Caldera was released and appears to have been replaced by Joe Testa, though no official line item has been posted on MiLB.com
Great image, Sue, don’t know where you get them sometimes.
Awfuly picky of the Nats to not want a pitcher with a 16.71 ERA.
Good for Arnesen, he did nothing to deserve starting the year in Harrisburg. Hope he sticks.
Mark: With the activation of Martis to HAR, & the promotion of Arnesen to SYR, would you agree that Atilano becomes the odd-man out in the HAR rotation to cover Arnesen’s departure?
BinM, that’s a great question, but one I don’t know the answer to.
I’ve been thinking that the Nats should really look into a 3 for 1 or a 4 for 1 trade to pick up a possible gem. I think back to those years that the Nationals had the Worst (#30) farm system for 4(!!!) years running. There’s about 4 or 5 teams in that shape now, systems starving for some respectability. Why not package the retreads like Atilano, Mock, J.D. Martin, etc., etc. to some team who could really use them.
We have a surge of young pitchers who deserve a chance to move up and show what they have. Arnesen, Meyers, Peacock, Milone; I’m sure I’m leaving out at least 3 or 4 more.
I’d consider elevating Rizzo to Magician/Wizard status if he could get more than a fungo bat & a PB&J sandwich for any of the pitchers on this list – Atilano, JD Martin, Mock, Martis.
Well, they ARE servicable. Maybe your self-preservation instincts have dulled your memories of the bad old days. Some places they would be a step up from what they have.
Let’s not forget in the last 8-10 years we’ve had 2 AAA teams fire their major league clubs for not putting out any kind of quality product.
