Fedde out for the year. If they transfer him to the 60-day DL, that might open up a slot if they want to add someone like Suero or Hernandez to the 40-man for an MLB look. Or they might add someone like Jacob Turner again just to eat innings. Hard to know.
My bet would be Suero, who has to be placed on the 40-man roster this offseason anyway to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. I was surprised they didn’t bump Hernandez up to Syracuse towards the end of the season, but there’s no reason to start his options clock this year when they have plenty of outfielders.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but September call ups don’t count towards arbitration or option clocks, right?
Will, I think you are right, but I’m not certain.
They do count. MLB time counts.
Service time, yes. Options, no.
I haven’t given much thought to guys who will be Rule 5-eligible or potential minor-league free agents. Suero very likely would be one who would be protected. Frankly, the Nats have so few studs in AAA and AA that not many others of significance spring to mind. Gushue might be on the Rule-5 cusp, and S. Kieboom may be eligible for free agency, so they may have to make some catcher decisions. I can’t see them adding Skole, CRob, or Snyder to the 40-man to keep them from walking.
I think Karl’s point on Hernandez is that he wouldn’t need Rule 5 protection yet, so maybe they shouldn’t add him and have to burn an option on him next year. That makes sense. I guess the counterpoint would be that at his age, by the time he’s out of options, it wouldn’t matter.
The Nats aren’t going to add Hernandez (and not Marmolejos either) because he (they) would not play at all over the next 3 weeks plus.
It’s a little different for pitchers because the Nats may look to give some pitchers extra rest, but given how big the active roster is going to get, I doubt the Nats add Suero.
Marmolejos is already on the 40-man. I won’t say that he won’t be called up, but I would agree that it’s unlikely. I don’t know what it could hurt, though. Maybe he’s going to get some intensive OF training in the instructional league (to make him faster???), but other than that, he’d probably benefit more from just being around the MLB team. He’s not going to miss out on anything from not getting a few more ABs in Florida . . . not that anyone is going to be going anywhere near West Palm Beach over the next week anyway.
Sunday was a Nick Adenhart bobble head day @ Memorial Stadium. ( anniversary of his passing ?) I wonder why the big club does not market their blue chip kids with bobble head promotions . If not bobble heads other swag stuff like
Souvenir soda cups or smaller versions of the popcorn holders you rent for bottomless $10 @ Memorial Stadium. Sure beats a night of an out of work actor from West Wing. Lol!
Game 3 tomorrow! Go GCL Nats!
