• Marmolejos 2-4, 2B, RBI

Altoona posted a picket fence in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to edge Harrisburg, 3-2 in the series finale. Matt Crownover turned in a quality start of two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. The loss went to Derek Self, who gave up a run on two hits in a single inning. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos singled, doubled, and drove in a run while Drew Ward singled and walked to lead the Sens’ offense.

Potomac – OFF DAY
The P-Nats return home after a 2-5 road trip against the C.L. North’s 1st and 3rd place teams. It doesn’t get any easier as they host the 2nd place Hillcats for four games starting tonight.

Hagerstown vs. Charleston – PPD
Hagerstown got an extra day off but it comes at the cost of yet another doubleheader tonight.

Auburn 5 West Virginia 4 (13 inn.)
• Braymer 4IP, 2H, 0R, 4BB, 5K, 2WP
• Engelbrekt (W, 2-1) 4IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 2K
• N. Perkins 2-5, R, 2B, 2RBI
• Ortiz 1-5, R, 2B, RBI, SAC
• Boggetto 1-5, RBI, SAC

The Doubledays rallied again in the 9th force extras, but this time they won it, 5-4 in 13 innings. Ben Braymer got the start and threw four scoreless innings, though he walked four and gave up two hits while fanning five. The win went to Max Engelbrekt, who also put up four goose eggs, but just one hit and walk while setting down two on strikes. Nic Perkins was the sole Auburn batter to notch multiple hits, going 2-for-t with a double and two RBI. Roster moves: C Anthony Peroni reassigned from the GCL.

GCL Cardinals 4 GCL Nationals 2
• Crowe 1⅔ IP, 2H, R, ER, BB, 0K
• J. Morales (L, 0-1) 2IP, 2H, 2R, 0ER, 2BB, 2K
• Connell 1-2, 2BB
• Evangelista 1-3, R, BB

The G-Nats were doubled up by the G-Cards, 4-2 as they lost for the third time in four games. Second-round pick Wil Crowe came out of hiding to make his pro debut, giving up a run on two hits and a walk over an inning and 2/3rds. The loss went to Jose Morales with two unearned runs allowed on two hits and two walks. He struck out… wait for it… two. Nick Connell singled and walked twice as the G-Nats managed just six hits and four walks.

Max Engelbrekt was the 40th-round pick but is making a good case to be the first guy from his draft class to be promoted to Hagerstown. From what little I’ve seen about him, he can barely touch 90, but he’s a gangly lefty who is hard to pick up amidst a jumble of arms and legs. He was a fifth-year senior, turns 24 in Sept., and will be “old for the level” forever, but if he keeps getting guys out, he’ll remain interesting.

Wil Crowe throws a lot harder than 90, and it’s good to see him finally surface. He was obviously on a very strict pitch count.

Looks like Fedde had a decent outing, no doubt with a number of scouts in the stands.

Crowe turns 23 in September so will “age” rapidly in prospect terms as well.

I watched Max a lot at OSU. I am glad he is doing Ok but his chances are very long. Really smart guy.

Anything to add to the scouting report? His OSU numbers were certainly phenomenal. I just find it interesting that there’s a 40th rounder who can actually do something.

He was a “short” reliever at OSU. He is a soft tosser with great movement on his breaking stuff. He has a great leadership personality and would probably make a great pitching coach some day. MLB time is probably doubtful. OSU has one of the best baseball programs in the country so he got a lot of great coaching.

Too bad we can’t arrange a brain and personality transplant from him to our 1st-round pick!

Anyway, Engelbrekt sounds like a great guy to have in the organization, no matter how far he makes it.

Thanks on this, half the reason we read this is to root for the 40th rounders.
Old for a level is much more important for hitters than for pitchers.
Hard to root for our 1st rounder this year.

Looks like Kevin Jepson is definitely not yet a savior for the Nats (or Syracuse). Trevor Gott also didn’t look any better than he had up with the Nats, so apparently that wasn’t just a case of the nerves.

Agreed. Austin Adams has had two good outings since returning to the Island of Misfit Toys, though. Too bad he didn’t show better in his one major-league chance.

Even if you have filthy stuff, if you can’t command your pitches, you have no future at the MLB level. Remember Henry Rodriguez? He frequently hit triple digits and had a nasty slider, but he had no idea where the ball was going when left his hand.

Austin Adams also throws hard and has a sharp slider, but his disastrous MLB outing was predictable (and would/will be repeated) based upon his track record of failing to throw strikes in his minor league stops. Until Adams can demonstrate his ability throw the ball where he wants to, he has no business on a MLB roster.

Speaking of relievers having no business on a MLB roster, can someone put Joe Blanton out of his misery and just release him already? Jeezz…now we know no one wanted to sign him last winter.

At least now we don’t have to hear Carpenter and Kolko’s BS spin about how good Blanton has been “lately.”

The Austin Adams inning (OK, so technically 0.0 IP, giving him a career MLB ERA of infinity), was straight out of Nuke LaLoosh. The only thing he didn’t do was bean Mr. Red.

The radio guys were talking about how Adams had a huge contingent there to watch him pitch. Feel bed for the guy but he’s no where near ready.

Time to see what Wander can do!

I think the fly ball rate on Suero scares them
