Syracuse rallied for two in the top of the 8th to tie, then gave it right back in the bottom of the 8th to lose again to Buffalo, 4-3. Greg Ross got the start and turned in a quality start of two runs on five hits and four walks over six innings. The loss went to Neal Cotts, who let in a run on a hit and a walk over 2/3rds of an inning. Brandon Snyder singled, homered, and scored twice while Adrian Sanchez went 2-for-4 to lead the Chiefs’ offense. Roster moves: 1B-3B Matt Skole placed on the 7-Day DL; OF Joey Butler activated from the 7-Day DL

The Baysox knocked Derek Eitel from the box in the 2nd as they took the series finale, 9-2 from Harrisburg. Eitel was charged with four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two over an inning and 2/3rds. Derek Self was the most effective reliever with three scoreless innings pitched. Mario Lisson doubled and walked twice while Yadiel Hernandez went 3-for-4 again as the Sens managed just six hits and drew seven walks but left on 11 baserunners.

The lights went out on the towers and went on in the skies beyond the outfield, prompting the umpires to pull the players off the field just minutes before the rains came. Wilmington was leading 1-0 with one out in the top of the 4th and they’ll resume play when the two teams meet yet again next weekend at Frawley Stadium.

The Suns built a 9-0 lead after five before the BlueClaws rallied for six in the 6th and two in the 7th to make things interesting. Hagerstown answered both rallies with single runs and got shutdown relief from Jordan Mills to hold on for an 11-8 win over Lakewood. Tyler Watson got the Jack Morris win with five runs allowed on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over five and a 1/3rd innings. Mills stranded two in the 7th and pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th innings for his third save. Adrem Corredor racked up nine total bases with three doubles and a triple while driving in five to lead the Suns’ 14-hit parade. Roster move: RHP Sam Held reassigned from Potomac; LHP David Ramos released.

  1. Too bad for David Ramos. Only last week did I realize he was Wilson’s younger brother, which I guess explains how he managed to stick around for 6 seasons despite a career 6.47 ERA

  2. Could Franco and Corredor finally be exhibiting the power they were professed to possess?

    It would be nice if we could eventually develop a power hitter from the Caribbean. Not sure that’s happened since Vlad Guerrero.

    1. Corredor only has one homer. “Gap power” willing only carry you so far, particularly at a corner power spot. That’s why I’ve always had difficulty getting excited about Marmolejos.

      I do think Corredor, Neuse, Banks, Noll, and particularly Dan Johnson are all showing enough to be under consideration for mid-season promotion. Time will tell with Kieboom and Soto since they’re so young and also got waylaid by DL time. Franco is still only hitting .217 and looks like he needs a full year at Hags.

      1. And Perkins. I’d still like to see more power development from him, though, as well as Banks and Neuse. But all three are hitting significantly better overall than they did at Auburn last year.

  3. Nice to see Yadiel Hernandez start to pick it up. For while, it looked like another Yunesky Maya type Cuban bust.

    1. I was just noticing that with six hits in two days, Hernandez had raised his average from .212 to .252! His calling cards in Cuba were high average and lots of walks, neither of which he has shown yet in central PA. He turns 30 this fall, so the window for him to be viably considered is rather small.

  5. Friday afternoon and bored with work, it occurred to me that knuckerballer J D Martin has yet to make an appearance this year. XST?

  6. The Brewers have called up former Nat farm hand Paolo Espino to make his MLB debut at age 30. Meanwhile, Lombo’s cameo with the Fish didn’t last long, as he’s been sent back to New Orleans after going 0-for-8.

  7. Former Nats 2nd Round pick Jeff Kobernus was just signed by the Mariners and assigned to their AA affiliate. Kobernus had been playing Indy ball in Lancaster, PA.
