Austin Voth failed to make it past the 4th inning again while Syracuse’s too-late rally was too little in a 10-6 loss to Rochester. Voth was lit up for seven runs on nine hits and a walk over three innings to lose for the first time in ’17. Clint Robinson drove in three while going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Chiefs offense.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 4-0 lead early and held off the Red Wings late for a 7-6 win to split the doubleheader. Taylor Hill couldn’t go the requisite five innings for the “W” and was charged with five runs on seven hits, including the fourth and five HRs he’s allowed thus far in 2017, and a walk over four and 2/3rds innings. Austin Adams was awarded the win as the most effective reliever to follow Hill as he retired four of five batters faced and did not allow an inherited runner to score. Brandon Snyder, Matt Skole, and Adrian Sanchez each homered while every Syracuse batter reached base in the 14-hit outburst.

Harrisburg – OFF DAY
Harrisburg continues its seven-game, eight-day road trip with four games in Hartford.

Potomac got the tying and winning run on base with nobody out in the bottom of the 11th but couldn’t hit the ball out of the infield to get the equalizer as they fell to Wilmington in extras, 5-4 and dropped the series, 3-1. Wirkin “For the Weekend” Estevez turned in a strong start, pitching six innings of one-run ball on two hits (one solo HR) and two walks while fanning four. Rhett Wiseman singled twice, walked three times (once intentionally) to lead the Potomac offense, which left 14 runners on base and went just 2-for-15 with RISP.

The Suns put up four spots three times in the final four innings to turn a 2-1 pitcher’s duel into a 15-6 demolition of the Shorebirds. Carlos Pena got the win with one run let in over five innings pitched on five hits and two walks. Matt DeRosier was dinged for the final five Delmarva runs on four hits and two walks over two and a 1/3rd innings in his 2017 debut while Jorge Pantoja got the final five outs with just one hit allowed. Dan Johnson hit his Sally Lg.-leading fifth HR and drove in three while Sheldon Neuse (second) and Jake Noll (third) also went deep in the 15-hit, seven-walk assault.

  1. The Down East Wood Ducks are coming to Woodbridge. Gotta love the minor leagues! (They’re apparently based in Kinston, N.C.)

    For those in the DC area, particularly on the Virginia side, tonight is the first “Dollar Monday” of the season at Potomac. General admission is only a buck (plus $5 to park) for all Monday home games. The general admission bleachers begin not far past the 1B and 3B bags and extend out to the bullpen areas, so the view is fine. They are indeed “bleachers,” though — metal seats with no backs. You can pay full freight for reserved seating behind the screen or in the boxes if you prefer. Alas, I can’t promise you an on-the-field view of Victor Robles, since he’s been MIA since getting HBP and pulling up lame on Friday.

    1. A comparativie pittance even compared to the Nats spring training games which were mostly $30-40 each.

  3. Dan Johnson: early candidate for the organizational breakout star for 2017?

    Last year’s HR leader for Hagerstown was Rhett Wiseman with 13. Good to see DJ showing some pop.

  4. Man, whatever Daniel Johnson learned in the Instructional League, the Nats should bottle it and give it to all their prospects!

    After hitting just one HR in 62 games at Auburn last summer, dude already has 5 in just 11 games at Hagerstown.

    That said, he flashed some power in college. After hitting 2 homers each of his first 2 seasons in college (one in JuCo), he hit 12 in 57 games last season as a junior. So clearly there was some pop potential there.

    And speaking of pop potential, it wouldn’t be a post by me if I didn’t mention Matt Skole still hits the ball far. Sure, he strikes out a lot but he also walks a lot. He’s also playing mostly 3B this year, which I still find kinda curious. Odds are he gets a shot this season.

  5. Should we expect the Robles timetable to bump up to Harrisburg coinciding with Blake
    Perkins timetable @ Hagerstown??

    1. Hold your horses on Perkins until he gets more than one extra-base hit. As for Robles, he’s just got to manage to stay on the field . . . Daniel Johnson also plays CF and would be my bet to move up to replace Robles. But it’s still very, very, very early!

  6. Way to go Carlos Pena. A big lefty from the Dominican Republic who went to High School at West High School… On the Hilltop of Columbus, Ohio. He would’ve been a freshman the at West the year the Nationals were affiliated with the Columbus Clippers.. only a stone throw away from their one-year digs at the old Cooper Stadium. Pena’s fellow West alums include Michael Redd, Jazz singer Nancy Wilson and Apollo Astronaut Donn Eisele. Former Cowboy MLB’era are John Morlan and Johnny Edwards. Keep an eye on Pena, a NDFA with a higher than usual ceiling.
