Norfolk 6 Syracuse 0
• Laffey (L, 3-1) 3⅓ IP, 7H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 1K
• Grace 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, WP
• Campana 2-4, SB
• Goodwin 1-3, BB
Any hope of earning a series split was dashed immediately as Norfolk scored five times in four innings en route to a 6-0 shutout of Syracuse. Aaron Laffey bore the brunt of the beating, washed over by the Tides for five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out just one. Tony Campana singled twice, Brian Goodwin singled and walked, which the rest of the lineup matched (Jason Martinson and Matt Skole, respectively) as two Norfolk pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout.
Harrisburg 5 Bowie 4 (13 inn.)
• Long 6⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 6K
• Simms (W, 2-2) 4IP, 2H, 0R, BB, K
• Pleffner 3-6, R
• Bostick 2-6, 2B, RBI
• Ballou 2-6, R, SB
After the regular bullpen blew a 4-0 lead, starter turned reliever John Simms held down the fort until the offense could rally in the 13th for a 5-4 Sens win over the BaySox. Harrisburg starter Jaron Long was charged with two runs on two hits and two walks over six and 2/3rds innings while fanning six. He left with the bases loaded and a 4-0 lead, which was gone by the 9th as Bowie got two in the 7th and single runs in 8th and 9th to force extras. Simms pitched the rest of the way, giving up two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings for the win. Shawn Pleffner’s third single to lead off the 13th proved to be the gamewinner as pinch-runner Stephen Perez took third on a botched sacrifice and scored on Rafael Bautista sac fly.
Frederick vs. Potomac – PPD
SSDD as the P-Nats and Keys were rained out again. They’ll try again for a twinbill tonight and will make up the other game next Thursday.
Greensboro 5 Hagerstown 2 – GAME ONE
• Lee (L, 2-1) 4IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 2K
• Lambert 2IP, 3H, R, ER, 0BB, K
• Page 1-3, R, BB, RBI
• Dent 1-3, R
The good news: Hagerstown scored single runs in the 3rd and 4th; the bad news: Greensboro answered both times with two-spots and scored again in the 6th to take the opener, 5-2. Andrew Lee got hammered for four runs on five hits and two walks over four innings to suffer the loss, his first. Matthew Page and Cody Dent both went 1-for-3 with a run scored as the Suns were held to just five hits total.
Greensboro 2 Hagerstown 1 – GAME TWO
• Crownover 4IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 6K
• Peterson (L, 2-1) 2IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K, HR
• Schrock 1-3, RBI
• Tillero 1-3, 2B
The Grasshoppers completed the doubleheader sweep with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to turn a 1-0 deficit into the winning outcome of 2-1. Matthew Crownover got the spot start and blanked Greensboro for four innings on four hits while setting six down on strikes. Tommy Peterson served up the gamewinner in his second inning of work to wear the “L.” The Suns matched their hit total of five with Max “For Those About To” Schrock driving in Ryan Ripken in the 5th for the lone Hagerstown run.
There’s a new slightly pessimistic scouting report of Lopez up on BP’s site: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=376
Projects him to end up in relief, and notes his control issues and trouble commanding his curveball.
This however conflicts with another recent scouting report of Lopez on the same site: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=360
This report posted a couple weeks ago is much more optimistic, and interestingly cites his changeup as his weakest pitch and speaks much more highly of his curve. For whatever it’s worth, scouts have said Lopez’s weakest offering was his changeup, not curveball so the first scouting report (above) stands out a bit.
You have to wonder which May outing the first guy saw. Lopez has been great twice in May, including nine Ks over six innings the last time out, but had one marginal start in between.
We’ve been hearing the buzz for two years that Lopez might end up in the bullpen. To their credit, the Nats are giving him every opportunity to make it as a starter.
Lopez can flirt with 100. He could be reliever. Either way, he will be a weapon if he can stay healthy.
Does anyone have any info on Robles? He apparently left the first game yesterday after being hit on the hand (I think) with a pitch.
X-rays were negative so prolly out a few days. Begs the question are teams pounding him inside or is he hanging over the plate?
Good news, I guess. Thanks for the update.
Must be an interesting back story on why Simms is in the bullpen. The irony of his getting the win in a game started by someone who is arguably displacing (if not replacing) him from the rotation.
Crownover taking the sting off Hearn being down and Bach being way down, Borne held down. More, please.
Agree I miss the Hearn watch
Which lefties in DSL simmering on low??

Nice start for Fedde last night. No runs, no walks. Best start of his pro career to date?
