Catching Up On Transactions
After some April Fools fun, it’s time to cleanse the palate and take a look at the latest transactions (all releases, unfortunately):

SYRACUSE
• Released 3B Zach Cox
• Released RHP P.J. Walters
• Released 1B Marquez Smith

HARRISBURG
• Released LF Randolph Oduber
• Released C Craig Manuel

HAGERSTOWN
• Released 2B Conor Keniry

AUBURN
• Released 2B Melvin Rodriguez

GCL NATIONALS
• Released LF Philip Diedrick

Maybe it’s me, it seems like there are lot more releases this year. I’d like to think that perhaps the slow boat to China facade of extended spring training has fallen out of favor, but I could be proven wrong in a day or two when the rosters are announced.

Clear the deck with Kinery and Mel- Rod
    Here comes JJ and DD

I think this bodes very well. The releases were castoffs at the upper level, aged out, and at lower level, directly reflected the products of competition. The Nats had a void in the middle infield at the lower levels last year. Now, through development, maturation, and heavy drafting in 2015, the competition is shaking out (and will continue to shake out). Something had to give. Mejia and Lora’s progress was a pleasant surprise, and Dulin, Sagdal, and Schrock earned their way up. I’m actually surprised by some of the players who made it through cuts.

Still waiting on that PTBNL from the Jays. Hoping for a Latin talent for the lower levels to feed in at Auburn or GCL.

    1. Luke Erickson says:
      April 3, 2016 at 11:40 am

Perhaps the Jays are (wisely) waiting to see if Storen repeats the pattern of underperforming due to the perceived sleight of not regularly pitching in the 9th inning when Toronto is ahead by three runs or less.

Looks to me like he couldn’t vulture the job away from Osuna. The 21 year old looks to continue as the close while Drew ends up once again, as a setup guy and backup closer.

Good use of words on middle Infielders
Manuel should coach with his rice
      Pedigree

  3. Karl Kolchak says:
    April 3, 2016 at 12:18 pm

Sorry to see Oduber go, but I guess he made the most of being a very low draft pick. He was one of many for whom the jump from High A to AA was just too much.

  4. peric says:
    April 3, 2016 at 1:18 pm

There goes the only left-handed catcher … but it he was left far behind by both Severino and Kieboom.

  5. Melissa says:
    April 3, 2016 at 1:34 pm

According to his Twitter account, Lucas Giolito is heading back to Harrisburg to start the season. He’s doing a road trip up along with Isaac Ballou and Reynaldo Lopez. I’m going to try to catch a Senators game this season before he’s promoted, but I imagine he’s not long for Harrisburg.

  6. forensicane says:
    April 3, 2016 at 2:31 pm

That would be quite a development, if Ballou were headed to Harrisburg. Says a lot about the OF talent at Syracuse; Ballou performed well there last year and is old for the level. Hoping he dominates AA and continues to climb. So refreshing to see depth really affect placements in the Nats organization.

Now we wait to see how brass
    Compliments norfolk and Bautista
    @ harrisburg : Wooten repeat ??
Eyes on N Mesa. PotomAc repeat
Or sens. I bet he joins Carey in Potnats
    Outfield grouping

Jeff, what did you see this spring, having watched the games. Who impressed you the most, and why?

Who is where is anyone’s guess. Syracuse with a Difo/Turner and Sizemore and Martinson tells me Martinson will play OF as well, and Skole to 1B, although Skole fared well at 3B last year. Martinson has a lot of value as a multi-position athlete if he can stop streaking and cut the K’s. And then there is Keyes, Goodwin(?), denDekker. What of Shawn Pleffner? Great starting rotation coming to the ‘cuse, and all those BP who did not make the bog club. Who gets the late innings.

Harrisburg – Bautista, Vettleson, Ballou, Bostick, Kieboom. Not bad. Wooten/DeBruin for 3B/1B / Getting old for lower. Don’t forget Alec Keller. Veteran rotation of Simms, Giolito. Now Lopez, Mapes, Williams, Valdez? Rauh? Silvestre? Nick Lee in pen, Mendez and others still around to take the next step. Orlan?

Lots of OF for Potnats. More releases to come. Stevenson, Carey a good bet. Page?

    4. Jeff says:

Grissom. We will all be like this
With Edwin Lora on and off the diamond .
Kelvin G and Edwin will be vacuums on Suns
      LH infield side.
Ryan Ripkin provided some humor as he
Decided not to slide heading into HP vs Braves
On Thursday ending up in a tagout. Maybe it’s
Best he doesn’t slide and avoid injury to himself
And the catcher. 6 foot five is a lot to lay down in
      The dirt .
DeBruna looked good @SS in an infield
Exercise with Franco @ 3B, Lora @SS too
Dulin @2b ( hence the Kinery release) with
      DiNatale @ 1b
Fyi number 4 from fighting Illini. David Keirnen
Played 1b behind Ripkin in later phase of
      ThursdAy scrimmage. More athletic guy
Less moving body parts than RR. No offense
      Meant to
Dietrich truly lost in numbers game behind
      Agustin , Daryl F. Ortiz ….
No idea on Randy Encarnacion with no
Sighting in batting cages or fields
SI much going on. Same with Israel Mota.

Tyler Watson looked ok in bullpen work
And sounded good in catchers leather
Same for conner Porter out of Memphis University.

My mind reverted to brien taylor yanx hard luck
Kid in bar fight : taylor Hearn take that lesson
Crash davis gives nuke laroosh about bar fights

You guys get the feeling that brass
Was debating Suns roster over a pot
Of coffee to this moment !?!
      Double bagged coffee!

    6. Jeff says:
      April 6, 2016 at 1:26 am

Grissom you echoed earlier this winter about
How the upper levels are being barn floor swept
To make room for the kids coming out of hagerstown
      From this year’s crop
Evidence in Perez being the main guy bumped to
AA. I thought brass might push the envelope on
Norfolk but give the system 30 days to see if
      Chafffe Seperates from wheat
      Right ?

  9. Jeff says:
    April 3, 2016 at 6:30 pm

    Grissom
The standard MO with cell groups
Playing for each 1A1F squad according
    Alphabet group (AAÀ/AA)
Seemed to be that some kids would play a level
    Above their previous season level
Franco 3b would play one afternoon with

PotomAc while other guys would hand in
    Low A

Kelvin Gutierrez was not missing any balls @ 3 b
    In infield drills
Sagdal and wiseman hit the ball in gaps
    Schrock hit HR
Quietly Brandt looked good @ SS. He warranted
a wave of huhs to the umps on a 6-3 backhand
Throw to 1st on Braves runner who was called
    Safe
Barrett looks in great shape as good as his
    Werth knome beating beard. Lol

  10. Jeff says:

This is the last chance to talk about the ‘Groovin Aruban’. Randolph Oduber was given a low 6 figure bonus out of the 30th round and we all followed him for about 5 years now.
He lasted a little longer than I thought.
    Good luck to him.

    1. Kirkie says:
      April 4, 2016 at 12:40 pm

Ah. Always had a bit of a soft spot for him, in a prospect fanboy kind of way (you know, when you attach hopes to someone for no apparent reason other than – you do.)

Hope he catches on somewhere else.

      1. Luke Erickson says:

        1. Jeff says:

Luke I will stick with Anderson “s group vs
ATL in 3/31 1F squad minus Kinery .
          And Mel-Rod.
          Ripken / Kiernen 1b
          Kevin G ( Franco ) 3b
          Loria and Brandt SS
          Sagdal Jeffries. UTL

            Oops forgot Schrock

  14. Pilchard says:
    April 5, 2016 at 10:38 am

Syracuse has the roster on their website:

    http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t552

    1. Kirkie says:
      April 5, 2016 at 11:35 am

I’m not sure that really is their opening day roster. I’d be staggered, for example, if Austin Voth isn’t in AAA to open the season.

      1. Luke Erickson says:
        April 5, 2016 at 2:05 pm

Correct. I won’t be able to make a post until tomorrow a.m. but I’ve got rosters for the top three levels so far.

      2. Pilchard says:
        April 5, 2016 at 2:05 pm

They updated the roster and Voth is on it.

The roster on the official website is consistent with this article identifying the Chiefs’ opening day roster:

        http://www.syracuse.com/chiefs/index.ssf/2016/04/syracuse_chiefs_announce_2016_opening_day_roster.html

  15. Jeff says:
    April 5, 2016 at 3:13 pm

    My surprise for farm rosters
Is norfolk being OG utility Guy
With Csrey and Mesa in OF for
    Potnats until Robles moves up.
LeCroy can use cutter and Bostick
    In OF in a pinch
    Right, Gil?

  16. Tom mossey says:
    April 5, 2016 at 6:26 pm

Potomac’s roster is now on the P-Nat website.

  17. forensicane says:
    April 6, 2016 at 1:26 am

Much bigger surprises about who did not move up and even who moved down or out. All through the system. Kevin Keyes and Ike Ballou to AA, while Goodwin gets the bump up. Congratulations to him for winning the competition. Drew Vettleson out of the system. Carey gets the sink or swim shot while the prospects at A- play for the promotion.

Turner to AAA means Difo to AA, still at SS.

Did anyone predict Michael Brady and Trevor Gott would start on equal footing?

Harrisburg starting rotation also features the quietly rising Mapes. Benincasa nowhere in sight – gone?

Sad to see Silvestre and Turnbull still DL. Bad luck with lefties.

Andrew Lee my highest pitching prospect who did not get promoted. Luis Reyes does. Mario Sanchez does. Why they call it competition. And thus unheralded Dominicans continue to ascend from the shadows of Rey Lopez.

Or, letting Lee develop more as a starter.

Ryan Brinley gets the bump up. Another low draft wonder trying to break the AA glass ceiling?

    1. Jeff says:
      April 6, 2016 at 4:07 am

      Well said
      Vettleson was a bust
Wooten and DeBruin being maybe gone
Could lead one to say that the future lies in
Hags kids and June draft 16 kids .
Some guys were just buying time for others
      In last year or so

  18. forensicane says:
    April 6, 2016 at 2:06 am

Looks like Spann, Wooten, and DeBruin also gone. Wooten the biggest surprise for me. Looked like he had turned the corner in 2014 Potomac championship run.

  19. Kirkie says:
    April 6, 2016 at 3:58 am

We’ll find out in time, but have there been any accompanying press releases about the names that Forensicane has mentioned as out of the system – or might this be another case of the notorious “extended spring training” whilst rehabbing an injury?

  20. TomM says:
    April 7, 2016 at 5:34 am

DeBruin is still in Viera on XST
