Final Winter League Update
In lieu of a 2015 review, for which I just couldn’t find more than a couple of truly good stories (never mind ten), here’s a final look at how players in the Nationals organization are doing in the Winter Leagues for the 2015-16 offseason. All statistics as of 12/31/2015.

The Venezuelan and Mexican Leagues finished up on Tuesday; the Puerto Rican Winter League ends on Monday. Before folks get too excited about Lozada and Smith, both are 30 years old (Smith turning 31 in March) and are doing precisely what they ought to be against the uneven pitching found in the winter leagues. Sadly, the latter part of that caveat should also apply to Goodwin, even if it seems fairly obvious that the Nats may only value him as a trade chip at this point.

  2. Good info, Luke. Just FYI, you seem to have “Orange” double-posted. Even though though they should be taken with several grains of salt, the positive developments with Goodwin are the first ones with him in a long time. Meanwhile, Severino is still struggling to hit against any level of competition, and Ballou posted disappointing numbers, particularly coming off a promising regular season. There’s not much positive to point to with the pitchers, either.

  3. Ballou’s numbers weren’t that bad. Particularly considering the small sample size.

    His BABIP was a very low .222, and he only struck out 8 times in 72 PAs (1 out of 9). So, it appears he had some bad luck. He also walked 10 times in 72 PAs which is solid. Even with his low BABIP, Ballou’s OBP was .333…

  5. It is possible that Goodwin might be facing being released due to the 40-man roster crunch caused by the Murphy and Drew signings. Assuming Storen and Papelbon are not traded in the next week or so, the Nats need to open up two slots. Erik Davis seems like a no brainer, but the other if need be would have to most likely be either Hill or Goodwin.

    Something to watch in the post-NewYear dog days.

    1. The 40-man call will indeed be very interesting, both now and over the next few weeks, as most don’t think the Nats are done with additions. As noted, Erik Davis is the one no-brainer. After that, it becomes a question of who the club has the least hope for among Goodwin, Hill, T-Mo, and maybe Martin or Grace. I don’t think de los Santos is anywhere close to contributing to the big club, but it would be hard to get him through waivers without being claimed. Not a lot of people seem to think that Moore will be with the Nats in ’16, so he’ll probably leave one way or another. Of course there has been trade talk about guys like Jordan, Cole, and Difo, among others.

      Goodwin did what he could in winter ball to argue for a look for one more year. Considering the lack of OFs in the upper minors, he might get it.

        It’s always been mystifying to me that a player who can neither defend nor hit has so much time/trust given to him by Nats management.

  9. My takeaways from the winter stats: Goodwin raises his stock from a low ebb. Hard to tell how much is reflective of a recovery from shoulder injury, but he is young enough to come around. Great to see power and speed from him (and from Kieboom in the fall). Still lots of K’s in his game, but he waits the count and anyone will take a ,.401 OBP.

    Bring on resolution of the 42>40 man roster!

    1. fore- couldn’t agree more on Goodwin. If the Nats staff is telling the truth, then Goodwin has turned a corner big-time. I understand that’s a big if, but he’s done everything asked of him and he could help the parent club a lot if he keeps it going in 2016.
      They sure gave him a lot of money!

  10. I’ve never thought of Storen as a middle inning reliever, Mark. Still don’t. I consider him a closer and a good one. One who has been jerked around more than most. Rizzo seems to be good at that. See Rourk for example. And others. Sorry Luke, too much major league, but I’ve always been upset about the Drew Storen situation.   11. Adrian Sanchez is also playing winter ball in Columbia and he’s tearing it up with a .388 average. He has 11 doubles and 12 rbi’s in 117 at bats with 11 k’s and 8 bb’s. He plays for the Leones de Monteria and the League MVP award is basically down to Adrian and one other player who has a lower batting average. The regular season ends this week so the MVP should be named shortly after that.
