AFL Update: Oct. 15, 2015

October 15, 2015

Arizona Fall League #6
Scottdale scored six runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 13-3 demolition of Salt River last night.

Drew Ward and Spencer Kieboom both made their first starts — at 3B and C, natch — but were both hitless. Ward drew two walks, struck out once, and hit into a double play in an 0-for-2 night. Kieboom walked once and was picked off second while going 0-for-3.

Defensively, Ward had two assists and made no errors while Kieboom recorded 10 putouts (all K’s).

Nick Lee appeared in relief and went two innings, but put on four baserunners with a hit and three walks. He struck out two with 21 of his 40 pitches going for strikes.

Salt River remains on the road — like it really matters — for an afternoon tilt in Peoria. As noted in the comments, Byron Kerr is reporting that John Simms is scheduled to pitch three innings in relief.

I really appreciate these updates. I have to admit, though, that the set of players we have at the AFL this year aren’t quite as interesting as in years past.

There is much that can change in some players
    Over winter.
Look @ Big O Abreau since Auburn.

    too much pessimism.

If expectations are nonexistent, then pleasant surprises are in store. Just follow with no expectations. It’s (to paraphrase Iverson) the AFL.

      True.
We all have no idea how the bullpen will evolve.
      Just that it will

Totally with you Forensicane. There’s a way to just be glad that it’s baseball and enjoy seeing these kids develop and be positively surprised when they exceed expectations. The reality of having a talented big club means that sexy top no brainer prospects like Strasburg, Harper, and Rendon simply don’t come our way as much anymore. Hopefully, a great kid like Drew Ward continues to show a strong eye that gets him on base enough to make the bigs. I was so impressed with him when I met him at Spring Training in 2014, and I believe he certainly has the makeup to justify Rizzo’s faith in him. The baseball I leave to those with better scouting eyes than I.
