Rochester’s Pat Dean struck out 10 and shut out Syracuse on four hits to take the game, 6-0, and the series, 2-1. Taylor Hill gave up all six runs (one earned) on seven hits, including a grand slam in the Red Wings’ five-run 3rd. He walked two and struck out six while suffering his seventh AAA loss. Caleb Ramsey, Dan Butler, Josh Johnson, and Trea Turner each connected for a single but no Chief reached base twice.

Harrisburg fell behind 5-1 after one, blew a 12-9 lead in the 8th, and rallied for four in the 11th to take the series finale, 16-12. Buried in the box score: Lucas Giolito started and labored through five innings, charged with six runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four and threw 98 pitches, 58 for strikes. Wilmer Difo ran wild with four stolen bases and went 5-for-7 with a walk and three runs scored to lead the Senators’ 22-hit parade, which included two doubles, a triple, and five homers.

Four P-Nats pitchers combined on five-hit shutout while Drew Ward launched a three-run HR to power Potomac past Salem for 5-0 win that ended a five-game losing streak. Austen Williams allowed all five hits, walked one, hit one, but struck six over six innings to earn his second win at High-A. Ward’s HR came in Potomac’s four-run 4th, which also saw five straight hits. Jake Johansen, Phillips Valdez, and Brian Dupra combined for three no-hit innings of relief to close out the game.

The Suns rallied for three in the 7th to break a 3-3 tie and added on a run in the 9th to take the game, 7-3 and split the four-game series. Justin Amlung started and went the first five, letting in two on a 2nd-inning HR and seven hits total over five innings. He left with a 3-2 lead, which David Napoli blew in the 6th but got the benefit of the Suns rally for the win. Matthew Page led the Hagerstown hit column with two singles and a double while Wilman Rodriguez doubled and homered and drove in two.

Auburn put up big innings in the 2nd and 8th innings and outslugged Hudson Valley to take the game, 8-5, and the series, 2-1. Jefry Rodriguez wobbled through five innings with four runs allowed on seven hits and four walks to earn the win, his second for the Doubledays. Four Auburn batters had multiple hits, with Edwin Lora driving in three and Victor Robles plating two in the 12-hit parade.
Giolito gets pounded on a day the Nats cough up first place. It’s the kind of day that makes me want to disconnect for a week and hope my return is like awakening from a bad dream.
I saw Giolito’s first outing at Potomac this year and he got hit pretty hard that night–but nothing like these first two outings at Harrisburg. Way too early to panic, of course, but not too early to wonder if maybe he isn’t quite the uber-prospect he’s made to be.
Giolito’s outing was odd:
– First 5 batters reached (2 infield hits included among them);
– After that: 5 IP 3 hits 1 ER 4Ks
Realize that the first inning counts too, but seems like he was at least partially the victim of bad circumstances, and it was a good sign that he pitched fairly well after a poor start to the game.

Thoughts
Prayers for Nats bats
Good for DF. He earned it more than Ramirez, so age does not trump production.
I wrote a few weeks ago that by years end we would call Turner the best Nats prospect in the system, including Giolito., and that takes nothing away from Giolito. Now it may be a little more realistic. I would rather the Nats wake up, but they are dull, dull, dull and Turner’s speed would inject something.
also welcoming Difo – 4 SB yesterday! Just let him get comfortable over the next month, no more yoyo, and watch him take off.
