Jason Martinson’s solo HR in the top of the 13th gave the Chiefs a 5-4 win in 13 innings and prevent a three-game sweep by the Iron Pigs. Bruce Billings turned in a quality start of two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings and left with a 4-2 lead. P.J. Walters struck out eight in four scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, his fifth for Syracuse. Tony Gwynn Jr. led the hit column with a 4-for-6 afternoon, followed by Mario Lisson at 3-for-6 and Josh Johnson at 2-for-5.

The BaySox fileted the Senators for a 10-3 win on Sunday and a 3-1 series win. Matt Purke’s return to AA in ’15 was not unlike his departure in ’14 as Bowie lit him up for nine runs on 10 hits over three and a 1/3rd innings. Dakota Bacus, Nick Lee, and Colin Bates combined for five and 2/3rds innings of one-run relief, but the Senators offense was filibustered for one hit over the last eight innings after a three-run 1st that featured a two-run HR by Brian Goodwin and an RBI single by Jose Lozada.

Rafael Bautista’s two-run single capped off a three-run 2nd that the P-Nats rode to a 3-0 triumph over the Red Sox. Three pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, with starter Ian Dickson going the first five and 1/3rd innings for the win, R.C. Orlan following with two and 2/3rds innings for the hold, and Brian closing out the 9th for the save. John Wooten singled, doubled, and walked to reach base three times while Bautista, Drew Ward, and Grant DeBruin each singled twice on the night.
Roster moves: LHP Matthew Spann demoted from Harrisburg; RHP Brian Rauh promoted from Hagerstown.

Hagerstown broke out for six runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 6-1 lead and held on for an 8-4 victory over West Virginia. Luis Reyes got the win, but was charged with all four Power runs on six hits over five-plus innings. “Orange” Marmolejos-Diaz and Raudy Read both smacked two-run homers while David Masters went 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace the Suns offense.

Lowell rallied from a 4-0 deficit to score six times in the middle innings and edge Auburn, 6-5. Taylor Hearn hit the wall in the 5th, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over four and 2/3rds innings. The loss went to Ryan Brinley on an unearned run in the 8th as two-out double was followed by a two-out error to send in the gamewinner. Kelvin Gutierrez singled twice and doubled once in four trips to the place to lead the Doubledays’ attack.
Purke has been pitching well this year. Hopefully he succeeds on AA the rest of this year.

I was at the Harrisburg game yesterday afternoon. It was the first time I’d ever seen Purke pitch; I didn’t catch any of his AA starts last season. I was surprised at how quickly he worked; he’d get the ball back from Brian Jeroloman, and he’d go. The pitch clock usually didn’t get past :12.
I didn’t think Purke pitched particularly badly. He appeared to be throwing heat; the stadium radar gun clocked him at 101 in the first. He wasn’t getting calls he wanted (and he talked to the home plate umpire after the first), and the second inning was an endless series of defensive miscues that ran up his pitch count.
I’m curious to see Giolito. I won’t be back to the island for three weeks; hopefully he’s pitching one of those games that I’m there.

There is no way Purke was throwing 101. The question is; what is he really throwing? Scouting reports post-surgeries are scarce. PG had him mid 90s in high school … he was just 89-91 while throwing in the AFL in late 2013. Is it possible the stadium gun there is 5mph heavy and he’s back to mid 90s?
Sidd Finch lives. It’d be more amazing if he hadn’t given up nine runs . . .
I wondered that, if the stadium gun was off. I also wondered if Quincey Latimore’s swing messed with the read.

Encouraging news about Purke where you said he wasn’t throwing that bad. When I first saw him picked in 2011 I thought we had a steal…hopefully it will come to reality.
