Rochester 4 Syracuse 2 — GAME ONE (COMP.)
• Laffey (L, 12-5) 7IP, 12H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 2K, WP
• Delcarmen 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Burriss 2-5, R, RBI
• Kobernus 1-3, 2BB, RBI
The Rochester Red Wings flew past the Syracuse Chiefs 4-2 when their suspended game resumed play with two outs in the bottom of the 1st yesterday. Syracuse took a brief 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Jose Lozada doubled, and Wilson High School alum and D.C. native Emmanuel “Manny” Burriss singled him home. After the small ball of two singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third in the 6th, Rochester took the lead on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch by “starter” but now long man Aaron Laffey. Despite combining for four free passes in four innings, Rochester’s Stephen Pryor managed to secure a win in relief and Lester Oliveros recorded a hold by stymying the Chiefs offense from the 5th through the 8th. Michael Tonkin recorded his eighth save for the Red Wings with a clean 9th.
Syracuse 7 Rochester 0 — GAME TWO
• Hill (W, 11-6) 7IP, 3H, 0R, BB, 2K, HBP
• Rhymes 2-2, R, BB
• Dobbs 2-3, R, RBI
• Hood 2-3, R, HR, 2RBI
An angry Syracuse squad responded in Game Two with a 7-0 whitewashing of Rochester. Starter Taylor Hill pitched a seven-inning complete game that was a model of efficiency, requiring only 86 pitches to earn his 11th victory. Emmanuel “Manny” Burriss singled and later scored on a Tyler Moore single in the first. The Chiefs turned this one into a laugher in a five-run 4th. Destin Hood circled the bases and invited Tyler Moore to join him in celebration at home plate with a two-run bomb to left field. Burriss did him one better by hitting a three-run bomb later in the inning that scored Greg Dobbs, who got on with a single, and Will Rhymes, who had reached base on a walk. To add insult to injury, the Chiefs tacked on their seventh run in the 5th when they punished the RedWings for walking fearsome Moore with a single by Hood then an RBI single by Greg Dobbs that scored Moore.
Trenton 7 Harrisburg 0
• Kroenke (L, 2-8) 5+ IP, 7H, 5R, 4ER, BB, 5K, HR
• Dupra 2IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 1K
• Ramsey 2-4
• Martinson 1-3, BB
The Harrisburg Senators continued their dubious march toward history with nine lackluster innings in a 7-0 loss to the Trenton Thunder, a sub-.500 Yankees AA affiliate that they made look like the 1927 Yankees. Dante Bichette, Jr. evoked memories of Dante Bichette, Sr.’s glory days for the Colorado Rockies by depositing a baseball into the right field seats in the second inning. Since only Caleb Ramsey and Jason Martinson were capable of recording hits for the Senators, that’s all the offense the Thunder would need. Trenton scored an unearned run following a Rick Hague error in the 4th. Starter and loser Zach Kroenke ran out of gas in the top of the 6th when he allowed a single, a double, and a single to start out the inning before reliever James Simmons poured gasoline on the fire. After promptly recording two outs, Mr. Simmons melted down with a single, a walk, and two more singles that allowed three more Thunder to rattle home plate and put this one out of reach.
Roster moves: LHP Sammy Solis assigned to the GCL Nationals for minor-league rehab.
Potomac 4 Frederick 3 (10 inn.)
• Spann 6IP, 4H, 0R, BB, 2K
• Mendez (BS, 3; W, 7-4) 2IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, BB, K, HR
• Perez 2-4, R, BB
• Norfork 1-3, 2B, BB
Much like the big Nats, the P-Nats put lots of runners on but only one in — courtesy of Isaac Ballou, who went (han) solo on Frederick’s Sebastian Vader over the CF wall in the 3rd — through the first seven innings. A two-out single, a two-base wild pitch and a passed ball gave Potomac a 2-1 advantage after eight innings. Gilberto Mendez, however, coughed up that lead with a two-run HR in the top of the 9th. The Keys returned the favor with a pair of errors to set up Tony Renda’s game-tying RBI single in the 9th, then committed another miscue in the 10th (fourth of the night) to give Potomac the 4-3 win in extras. The win, Potomac’s seventh straight, combined with a Wilmington loss reduces the magic number to clinch to six.
Roster moves: OF Stephen Souza reassigned from Hagerstown for MLB rehab.
Hickory 5 Hagerstown 1
• Ott (L, 0-2) 5IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, HR
• Valdez 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, K
• Mesa 2-4
• Kieboom 1-3, RBI
Hagerstown got one in the 1st, then were shown who’s their Crawdaddy by two Hickory pitchers for a 5-1 loss. Yohander Mendez and Angelo Leclerc held the Suns to just five hits and one walk on the night, with Narciso Mesa the sole batter to reach base twice. Travis Ott lost the 1-0 lead to the first batter he faced, gave up two more in the 3rd, and another in the 4th. He finished with four runs allowed (two earned) on four hits and two walks while setting down four on strikes. Greensboro, however, also lost to reduce Hagerstown’s magic number to eight. Should the Suns make the playoffs, Lucas Giolito won’t be pitching, according to WaPo’s Adam Kilgore.
Auburn 4 Williamsport 0
• Ander. Martinez (W, 2-2) 6IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 2K
• Orlan (H, 3) 2IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 4K
• Gardner 3-3, 2B, RBI, CS
• Langlois 2-3, R, 2B
• Read 2-4, R, 2B, HR, 2RBI
Three Doubledays pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout of the Crosscutters by a 4-0 count. Anderson Martinez went the first six innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Robert Orlan let up two hits over the next two for this third hold while Mario Sanchez worked around a two-out single in the 9th to seal the deal. Jeff Gardner led the Auburn hit parade with two singles and a double while Raudy Read got things started with his sixth home run in the bottom of the 1st.
GCL Nationals 2 GCL Mets 0
Play was halted in the top of the 4th after G-Met farmhand Manuel Hilario was seriously hurt in a head-first collision at second base. According to an official release by the Mets, he was airlifted to an area hospital where he was given a CT scan, which appears to normal and the 22-y.o. could be released today. They’ll pick up play today and play a second game afterwards.
DSL Nationals vs. DSL Orioles2 — DNP
Rain washed out the penultimate game on the schedule. While the game is listed as “postponed,” it’s quite possible that it’s actually cancelled.
Cool. Solis. Coming back. Too bad Purke
Did not have TJ surgery
Hagerstown should have Von ordon or
Borque for playoffs ? Mooneyham?
Good experience for Ott
Another nickname for Burriss ? Ray
Realize that this is not going to happen as the everyone appears to think that Nate Sheirholtz is the answer (despite being god-awful for the last 2 months) to fill the Nats’ need for a left-handed bat off the bench, but if the Nats are going to add a left-handed bat to the roster for September. It should be Emmanuel Burris. Before that thought is summarily dismissed consider that he is a switch-hitter that has been great against righties this year .323 AVG .857 OPS; unlike Nate S, Burris has been red-hot of late hitting .351 (.935 OPS) in July and .356 (.951 OPS) in August. Burris can run, and play multiple positions IF and OF. By any objective measure, he is the better option for the Nats right now.
The affection for Scheirholtz who was awful for the Cubs (and particularly bad over the last 2 months), and has done little in his short stint in Cuse, is driving me bonkers. Would think that you need to earn your spot on the NLs best roster, and hitting .100 over the last 2 months does not cut it. Yes, Schieholtz was a decent player last year. That was… last year, not this year.
Remember Rizzo does like the intangibles. He probably thinks that Schierholtz is going to get next to no playing time and wants somebody who will accept his occasional at bats, be well-liked in the locker room, and not be overwhelmed by big moments in the field. I hope Burriss gets a callup in September for an early clinching Nats team as a thank you for the tremendous season that he’s had. For him to play in National Park as a Washington National would have to be a lifetime thrill for him and that opportunity may be why he chose to sign with Syracuse in the first place.
Rizzo may also like the fact that Schierholz’s terrible stats this year are a result of both a BABIP (70 points below career average) and HR/FB% (down over 30%) are well below his career averages despite the fact that his batted ball profile tracks his career norms (his LD% is actually slightly above his career average, 20.7% over 20.5%) give them a decent reason to think that the Nats are in position to take advantage of positive regression.
So there’s that. And the fact that Burris’s career numbers give no particular reason to believe that lighting up AAA at his age (29) is a particularly hopeful sign
Maybe NS is just declining. Of course he is willing to take occasional ABs, because his stats say he should be bagging groceries instead of playing on a world series contender.
I would love to see the AAA guys getting promoted for bit roles. Wouldn’t it be nice to reward guys’ great AAA performance with a shot with the big club rather than getting a .192 batter to jump the line instead?
#voteburriss
It’s a cold world in the majors. There are only 40 roster spots, and roster moves have consequences. The Nats make moves coldly, based on a reasoned assessment of what mix of players can help them win games – in Sepember and (hopefully) October.
I wish Burris well; he’s a fellow DC native. But Rizzo and the Nats aren’t in the story/narrative business. They’re in the baseball business.
Yup. And then there’s Matt, “We can also wait. He’s got experience,” Williams said. “He’s had success. He hits from the left side (and) with (Nate) McLouth going down there’s a need for (that). But when that it is, we don’t know. We want him ready, when he is ready and be able to be up here and be productive. We don’t want to rush him in that regard. There is no need to do that at this point. We want to make sure his timing is good and he’s ready to play when he gets here.”
Right. 0 for 9 with 4 strikeouts then he gets the call. Then there was the whole Greg Dobbs debacle and he is more of a Matt Stares type given his age.
Why not Burriss instead of Cabrera who really isn’t that impressive? Especially at shortstop. Another guy with an All Star selection on his resume years ago.
Why even bother to have a AAA team then Rizzo?
In regards to Cabrera, WTH are you smoking.

Probably true. But it seems more likely that Burriss will get to see playoff action with the Chiefs without any time on the Nationals roster. If they are going to swap Zach for Cabby? Doubtless you won’t see any of the Chief’s stalwarts on the Nat’s roster with the possible exceptions of Tyler Moore and Sandy Leon. Plus Rizzo would have to blind not to find a way to get more relief help for Matt who like Harper is still very much a raw rookie. Handling a bullpen is definitely not his forte. So more is better. I can see Martin and Cedeno and perhaps Grace. Not sure about the Bear though … or Mattheus for that matter.

Jeff, the Senators need to get you on their sales force lickety split quick. After watching this lousy bunch, they’ll need optimists such as yourself to sell a return to the playoffs for the potential season ticket holders next year.
