Pawtucket 4 Syracuse 3
• Laffey 6IP, 8H, 3R, 2ER, BB, K, HR
• Madrigal (L, 0-3) 1IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Hood 1-3, R
• Burriss 2-5, R, RBI, 2E
Shuckit! The Chiefs fell to Pawtucket last night! But they did not do so without a fight. After three PawSox runs over the first five made the home fans feel less than all right, a three run rally by Syracuse made the score tight. A soft single by Jeff “Strobe Kobe” Kobernus to right, scoring Emmanuel “Purest” Burriss, tied the score for sure and was the fans’ fave highlight. But in the bottom of the 9th a vengeful Corey Brown told the fans, “Good night!” He effectively ended the contest with a solo dinger that was out of sight. The final score was 4-3, you see.
Harrisburg 4 Bowie 3 (10 inn.)
• Espino 7⅔ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 6K, HR
• Manno (W, 1-0) 1⅓ IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, BB, 3K
• Lozada 2-4, RBI
• Martinson 2-5, R
The “vengeance is mine” theme of the Syracuse game re-emerged with a two-run blast to left from Chris Marrero in the 1st to give Bowie an early 2-0 lead. Drew Vettleson answered “Not very much” and answered a two run homer to right in the 4th. After Jose Lozada’s RBI single in the top of the 9th gave put Chris Manno, who had entered the game in the 8th in relief of starter Paolo Espino, in position to win, the Brooklyn native returned the favor and gave up the tying run in the bottom of the 9th. When Vettleson came up in the Harrisburg in top of the 10th, Skole and Martinson were on second and third. The sight of him apparently frightened loser Julio “Why’d you have to say my name?” DePaula as he unleashed game-losing wild pitch for the hospitable Baysox. Bryan Harper saved the day with his first save for the Senators with a 1-2-3 tenth.
Roster moves: RHP James Simmons reassigned from Syracuse; RHP Ryan Perry released.
Potomac 5 Salem 2
• Encarnacion 4IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 4K
• Dickson (W, 2-8) 3IP, 3H, 0R, BB, K, HBP
• Tejeda 4-5, R, 3-2B, RBI
• Manuel 2-4
The P-Nats are going to go into Winston-Salem, which has been house of horrors since BB&T opened in 2010, with some momentum as they defeated the Red Sox, 5-2 for their sixth straight road victory. Oscar Tejeda’s third double of the night was the catalyst in a three-run 8th that broke the 2-2 deadlock as the former Sox farmhand went 4-for-5 on the night and 7-for-13 in the series sweep. Pedro Encarnacion started and went the first four innings, giving up both Salem runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four. Ian Dickson, Travis Henke, and Gilberto Mendez combined for five scoreless to earn the win, hold, and save respectively.
Roster move: RHP Ronald Pena placed on the 7-Day DL; It’s unofficial, but the Potomac Booster club is passing along news that OF Will Piwnica-Worms has decided to retire and enroll in a med-school program at the University of Pennsylvania.
Hagerstown 3 Delmarva 1
• Silvestre (W, 6-7) 6IP, 9H, R, ER, 2BB, 5K, BK
• Cooper (SV, 2) 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Difo 1-3, R, 2B, BB, 2RBI
• Ballou 1-3, 2B, RBI
A three-run 3rd was all Hagerstown would need as they defeated Delmarva, 3-1. Wilmer Difo got the Suns on the board first with a two-RBI double after a hit batter and wild pitch. Difo then scored on Isaac Ballou’s double later in the inning. Despite surrendering nine hits, Hector Silvestre allowed only one run to the Shorebirds, with it coming on a balk in the 4th inning. Delmarva threatened in the 7th, but Andrew Cooper escaped the inning and retired the final six batters he faced to earn his second save of the 2014 season. This was Hagerstown’s 11th win in 20 games against Delmarva this year.
Lowell 10 Auburn 2
• Dickey (L, 0-1) 2IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 3K, 2WP
• Bach 3IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 2BB, 2K, HBP
• Carey 1-3, R, 2B
• Gunter 1-4, R, 3B, RBI
Auburn could not overcome an early three-run deficit as they fell to Lowell, 10-2, for their second loss in as many days. Starter Robbie Dickey lasted only two innings, giving up three runs on three hits. The Doubledays then cut the lead to 3-2 in the second, but that would be the only offense they would put up all night. Auburn relievers then imploded, surrendering seven more runs to Lowell in the game, including three in the 3rd and 8th innings. The Doubledays also made three errors, which made two of the Spinners’ 10 runs unearned.
GCL Nationals 8 GCL Mets 3— GAME ONE
• Reyes (W, 1-2) 5IP, 6H, 2R, ER, BB, 2K
• Lee ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 0K
• Ortiz 1-1, R, 3B, 3RBI, 2BB, HBP
• Gutierrez 1-3, 2R, BB
• Rosario 0-1, 2R, RBI, 3BB
The G-Nats only got three hits but made the G-Mets pay for 10 walks as they took the opener, 8-3. Luis Reyes pitched a season-high of five innings, letting in two runs on six hits and a walk while fanning two for the win. Oliver Ortiz tripled for the sole G-Nat extra-base hit, scored a run, walked twice and drove in three to lead the G-Nats offense.
GCL Mets 7 GCL Nationals 4 — GAME TWO
• Mills (L, 1-1) 2⅓ IP, 5H, 3R, ER, BB, 0K
• W. Davis 2⅔ IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 3K, 3-1 IR-S
• Rosario 2-2, 2B, RBI
• Ortiz 1-2, R, 2B, RBI
The G-Nats rallied for three in the bottom of the 4th to pull within one of the G-Mets at 4-3, but couldn’t get over the top as they dropped the second game, 7-4. McKenzie Mills took the loss, with three runs charged on five hits and a walk and zero K’s over two and a 1/3 innings. Dionicio Rosario and Oliver Ortiz both doubled and drove in a run as the G-Nats notched seven hits but no walks.
Roster move: LHP Nick Lee assigned from Potomac for minor-league rehab; RHPs Matthew Derosier Jefry Rodriguez reassigned from Auburn.
DSL Rockies 7 DSL Nationals 2
• W. Pena (L, 1-4) 4⅓ IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 3K
• Morel 2⅔ IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 6K, 1-1 IR-S
• A. Martinez 2-4, RBI
• Jo. Ramirez 2-4, CS
Two-run outbursts in the 5th, 7th, and 9th innings by the D-Rox broke open a 1-0 game as the D-Nats lost for the fourth time in five games, 7-2. Wilber Pena was chased with one out in the 5th, eventually charged with three runs on six hits and three walks as he struck out three in his fourth loss. The D-Nats offense was stymied for six innings before scoring single runs in the 7th and 9th innings. Andres Martinez and Joshual Ramirez both went 2-for-4 to lead the seven-hit effort.
Hey, good for Will PW. He probably figures there’s no use risking that obviously valuable brain of his on further concussions.
I saw that mammoth home run he hit at the Pfitz shortly before he got injured. I’ll bet it’s a moment he’ll long remember from his too-brief pro baseball career.
Will PW is the kind of cat who could probably go to U Penn’s Med School, work like a dog for 8 years after slaving away in an elite middle school, and solve many of football’s and baseball’s concussion management challenges. If he does that, he’ll be like one of those sports’ franchise owners whose career ending energy catapulted them into God’s true plan for their lives.
Holy kamoley, the Piwnica-Worms family is a troupe of superstars of medicine! http://www.mdanderson.org/newsroom/news-releases/2013/versatile-bench-to-bedside-scientist-research-leader-helen-piwnica-worms-appointed-vice-provost-science-at-ut-md-anderson-cancer-center.html
Also, Perry’s release brings to an end the line of talent starting with Collin Balestar being drafted by the Expos before eventually being traded for Perry. Not many even remotely Expos-related storylines left in the organization anymore.
I’m Ian Desmond, and I don’t agree with that comment.
Guys Manno looked really good last night Cam in with the bases loaded and got the last out in the 8th and did a great job in the 9th striking out 2 The only hiccup was a throwing error that cost him the run and the lead. Overall his minion have to be happy with his progress
“You play to win the game” says Coach Herm Edwards. Manno’s throwing error was costly, and he should be doing PFP for a long time over the next few days because in MLB we can’t lose megabucks on losses due to getting the yips on shoulda been game ending plays. Did you see or hear the call for this play? All I had to go on for the writeup was the recap on milb.com. Would love to get some intel on what really went down and on whether or not it was his fault or whether there were mitigating circumstances. I’m tough on Manno and all our guys because I feel their coaches are too. I want to see Manno pitch in DC for sure.
I really don’t get the continued Manno-love. I look at him and see a guy whose WHIP has been in the 1.4 range for the past three seasons. No way he’ll even sniff making it to the show if that keeps up.
Will PW a class act and a very smart move

Is it me or are this year’s draft picks doing absolutely terrible. I can’t seem to find one that is iff to a good start. Add to this the fact that we did not sign our 2nd and 9th rounders and this draft is starting to look like a washout.
They are doing absolutely terrible. If Fedde turns out to be a bust (which we won’t know for several years), this could be the worst Nats’ draft since the 2006 debacle. Even after blowing it on Crow, we got some useful pieces in 2008 (Espinosa, Milone, Tyler Moore, Lombardozzi).
Geez Louise, let’s at least wait another few days before pushing the “debacle” or “bust” button on the players from this year’s draft.
Go look at the stats. ERAs in the four digit range and sub .600 OPSs abound. And remember, most of these are college guys, who presumably are already near their ceilings and playing in the lowest level of the minors.
But please note that I said “could” be the worst draft since 2006. I’m perfectly willing to be pleasently surprised. 🙂
Got to believe that it’s a marathon and not a sprint. These young men are adjusting to one of the largest life changes they will ever experience. Personally, I struggled with the transition from academic to professional. Eventually, I figured things out, and I trust and pray rZo drafts for the long term as well.
Damn. I was waiting for the day when Dave Jaegler would spell Willy Worms’ name and the bell would ring.
Nick. Keep in mind something
Look @ the number of NCAA guys lead by
Drew Von Orden who had full college seasons including
Some tournament play
I am taking the auburn play with a grain
Of salt as in spring training pitching shifts.
I do agree that guys like Gunther should
Be getting better results .
Funny how things play out. Oduber sits a bit
W3 retires. Dent pressed into OF play
Wooten gets call from Hags while suns
Get W.Rod back?
Sec314. Who knows? w3 gets medical degree
And gets hired by Lerner family ?
Karl and Souldrummer, Please I am not a minion , just a fan I love my nats and to be honest I love this Kid manno
Now let me say out loud you are both dead on and this is why I am a big fan of this blog because you tell it like it is
No doubt Manno has the makeup to be a big league guy. The very attractive part of this kids game and it intrigues all of his coaches is he misses bats. He strikes out a bunch for a guy who is only 89-92 . Now to your points this kid is an incredible athlete and has been a fantastic fielder his entire career. His college career was one of the best fielding CF in the ACC. I know this because my nephew played against him at UNC. He is a solid fielder and awesome in the dugout. But I am afraid Karl is correct 2010 whip 1.22
2011 whip 0.71
2012 whip 1.35
2013 whip 1.45
now making the jump from a ball to AA is the test. After going over his stats I have to agree with Karl that he needs to get that down and its not the BA against that is hurting him. Its the walks. So as a scout I am not as negative as Karl. I love his strike out per 9 and I love his funkiness. So Manno if you are reading in.get the walks down and your big league ticket could happen. By the way guys I know many of you are his minions and I get it but be fair and be understanding . I met the young man twice. I actually had to interview him at Duke and again at Hagerstown. All I can say is wow a great human being
and the error he made was a broken bat ground ball back to him . The bat came towards him as he was throwing , but no excuse. Make the play MANNO
Karl the love for Manno is a cool thing for the nats and this site. I guess people like the underdog and like for what he stands for. Please talk to the community of hagerstown and find out what he did for people there and by the way his years with us were not good they were outstanding and people remember that, at least I did. I also understand from the reds minor league blog that the people of pensacola were crazy about him I do not have a crystal ball and not sure if this kid ever plays a game in the bigs, but isn’t it refreshing to see a young highly educated young man giving rather then taking It is his make-up and i will root for guys like him any day of the week
Don’t get me wrong. I love rooting for the “good guys.” I’m glad I saw Will PW’s monster tater. 🙂
I just tend to be hard headed in evaluating the chances of our guys. Could be I’m still feeling stung by Danny E’s struggles the past couple of years. I loved watching that guy when he was a prospect and during his first two big league years.
Anybody asks what the community that Luke has fostered is about and you tell them that Chris Manno’s Blown Save Win and Will PW’s retirement got the biggest hits in the comments. Both are long shots to make the majors as players because you hope Will PW’s in medical school to complete it and Manno’s WHIP is going in the wrong direction.
anyone that is not a bonus baby is a long shot to make the majors. Both of those guys used baseball for an eduaction at one of the best schools in the country. Use baseball do not let baseball use you
sorry guys miss spelled education(haha)
sorry SD just wanted to contribute
