Nationals Unveil “Accelerated Camp” Roster
While the “Big Nats” have been in spring training for more than a week, this week is the early reporting date for the minor-leaguers, a.k.a. accelerated camp.
Basically, it’s a chance for the top-tier prospects to get extra time with the coaches and make sure everyone’s going in the right direction.
All but a handful below are on the 2013 Watchlist, but inferences as to where they will be assigned this year cannot be readily drawn from this. Last year, for example, you might have thought that Jack McGeary’s presence meant a ticket to Hagerstown for 2012 after 2010 surgery and a short stint in the GCL in 2011. Instead, he was assigned to Auburn.
This year, thanks to the reporting of Lacy Lusk we get a little bit more of a clue as to who’s still rehabbing.
Without further ado, here’s the rest of the roster:
PITCHERS | CATCHERS | INFIELDERS | OUTFIELDERS |
Dixon Anderson | Jeff Howell | Cutter Dykstra | Billy Burns |

As a lifelong fan with little understanding of spring training, will all these guys be at Viera along with the 40 man roster and spring training invites? Seems like a lot of people but I am not at all familiar with how large the facilities are.
Any info re Eric Komatsu?
According to the twitter link in the original post, Komatsu is with the “rehab group” (with Giolito, Solis, Meyers) as Komatsu recovers from a broken foot suffered last year.
Actually suffered in late 2010, according to this interview.
sjm — I’m not touting myself as a ST expert, but I did make it down there last year. Yes, all of these players will be in Viera. From what I saw, there were essentially 2 different camps conducted at the same location: one is for the big leaguers / established starters and those who are trying to make the 25 man roster, the other camp is for all of the minor leaguers.
As for the facilities, you have Space Coast Stadium and an adjoining field — this is where the big leaguers train. Then, about 1/4 mile away (just across a large parking area), you have Carl Barger Complex. CBC has all of the batting cages and 4 main diamonds that the minor leaguers train on. What I saw was what appeared to be scrimmages between Hi A and Lo A squads and then your AA and AAA players.
Hope this helps. If you can, you should really try to get to ST once, it was very enjoyable, very watchable, very accessible.
mds: thanks – its on my list and hopefully next year
