AFL Update: November 10, 2010
Tidbits from Tuesday's AFL action
A better game for the Nats, but the Scottsdale Scorpions fell 7-4 to Phoenix Desert Dogs to snap their four-game win streak. Highlights included:
- Michael Burgess smacked a two-run HR (his 1st in the AFL), doubled, and scored two runs while going 2-for-4 and playing RF
- Steve Lombardozzi went 0-for-1 off the bench and played 2B
- Adam Carr tossed two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and just one walk
- Cole Kimball gave up a hit but struck out two while keeping the Desert Dogs off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 8th
The Mesa Solar Sox also lost, thus the Scottsdale lead remains at two games with eight to play. Sammy Solis (0-0, 5.17) is slated to take the hill this afternoon against former National farmhand Daryl Thompson as the Scorpions visit the Peoria Saguaros this afternoon. Bryce Harper is also expected to play.
Baseball America posted their minor league free agent list today and for the Nats, there were no big surprises. No Rafael martin, which is good, was wondering if he had a special clause in his contract or something.
There are a few names that I would hope they keep, Devin Ivany among them, but no heartbreakers if they lose them.
An awful lot of the Syracuse roster there.
Post in progress now…
More questions Sue. Are Smoker and McGeary no longer prospects of any significance? I realize Smoker had some success as a reliever this year, but does he really have any real future in the big leagues? How does his fastball register? And what about McGeary? Anything there? Gosh, that draft looked promising at one time. Go Zimmermann!
Sue’s smarter at this than me, but have to say the 2nd half season for Smoker was very positive. I really think that the coaching has gotten better, too, since Rizzo took over.
McGeary had Tommy John surgery in June or July, so he may make a few cameos towards the end of 2011. Too bad, as his numbers were getting a lot better.
Smoker made my Hagerstown watchlist based on that late-season success as a reliever. I think the biggest shame of McGeary is that his injury will obscure what was actually a rather creative way to sign a guy that scared off folks with his college plans/demands.
