Luke, your photo seems to show Goodwin looking at home on the Sac Fly “that wasn’t”. Was Goodwin watching the Rightfielder and left too early or was his 3rd base Coach yelling to him to run and mis-timed it?
That’s a cropped pic and it appears to have been taken by Lee after the swing but well before the tag play. As you saw in yesterday’s pic — a screenshot of a replay — it was a very close play. Naturally, there’s no video on the MLB.com site of the fateful play.
Thanks for your thoughts. Some are upset with Goodwin’s baserunning including the bad pickoff.
Despite Verducci running his mouth, every replay of the “sac fly that should have been” that I saw was inconclusive or showed Goodwin had his foot on the bag when the ball was caught. It’s clear that what happened was that the umpire called Goodwin’s movement (which came before the catch) and not the foot on the bag. It was a bad call, though not a terrible one – it’s hard enough to watch two places (runner and catch) rather than three. I was really surprised that the umpire went hunting an out there.
The game was also protested, probably because the appeal was not conducted correctly.
About the only thing that was inarguable is how awful Verducci is as an announcer — he makes Tim McCarver sound like Vin Scully.
