Updates on AFL action over the weekend
Here’s a look at how the Nationals fared over the weekend in the Arizona Fall League…
FRIDAY
The Scottsdale Scorpions pounded the Phoenix Desert Dogs, 11-4
- Michael Burgess went 1-for-4 with 3 K’s as the DH
- Brad Peacock struck out the side while pitching the sixth but gave up a run on two hits
- Cole Kimball pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out one
SATURDAY
With a 6-4 win over the Peoria Javelinas, the Scottsdale Scorpions improved to 4-1
- Sammy Solis got the start and allowed a run on two hits and a walk over three innings while striking out one. He also picked off a runner
- Adam Carr pitched two scoreless innings to get the win while walking one and striking out one
- Steve Lombardozzi played 2B and batted leadoff, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk and scored two runs
- Derek Norris caught and batted cleanup, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base. He threw out the only runner to attempt a steal against him

Elliott — There’s a Manno expert out there named Mel who has all the Manno info you need. So far, he looks like a diamond in the rough. Probably will start the year @ Hagerstown.
Looks like Norris sure is intimidated by the competition.
If Norris can just stay healthy. Harper was supposed to report yesterday and should be eligable to start tomorrow. If not, he cannot play until this coming Saturday. Sure would like to see at Lombo, 2B; Norris, C; Harper, RF lineup tomorrow.

Sue spoke with Mel in a chat room for baseball america. Mel is one of the most knowledgeable baseball guys on any blog I have ever been on. He has a ridiculous resume, both as a coach and a scout. College coaches love him and respect him, and baseball Gm and scouts are quite aware of him and the players he produces. . Anyway did not mean to get long winded. Mel has three guys that he speaks of big time. One Delin Betances of the double a yankees. 6″9 250 fast ball 97-98, throws +++ pitches. Beato of the Orioles, and my main point being on a nationals website Manno. He gave Manno the ultimate compliment. He said he will continue to get better and better. 6″3 and Mel said as deceptive as Cliff Lee, wow that is a major compliment. He thinks the Nationals should really pay soem attention to this young man, remember, Cliff lee in Arkansas averaged 6-7 walks per nine, and Mel said Lefties that pitch only once in 7 days have a hard time repeating thier mechanics. From his experience when they turn pro and pitch more and more they get better and better. He absolutely believes that Manno will be a very good pro pitcher. Well Mr. Manno, someone out there likes you very much , work your tail off in the off season you have a lot to prove to us Nat fans
Elliot lets look at the stats 30 k’s in 18 innings this year 2.5 era and more importantly whip of .93 . I like the stats but want to know more , and here is what i found out fast ball sits 87-89 (not bad but the kid only weighs 160), Guys not rocket science, put this 6″3 left on major weight gaining diet , buff him up and you could see a Cole Hamels affect of picking up 3 MPH on his fastball, I spoke with his college pitching coach, and he thinks this kids make up is off the charts, and thinks he will be a much better pro pitcher then a college pitcher, I found that to be strange until I heard his explanation. Chris is a late bloomer, and his body ,when it starts to mature and develop, will produce a much different velocity. Remember this youn man in the acc averaged 14.23 K’s per nine. Thats crazy. Lets see hwere he is next year , I would guess A ball or HIgh A
The smart money has him going to Auburn, but a strong spring could give him a trip to Hagerstown. It’s pretty rare for a guy to jump from the GCL to Potomac unless he’s going into his age-23 season.
my question Sue is why does a four year kid from the ACC Duke go to The GCL in the first place. He is young as you said , He is only 21 , so he graduated a year or so early . Good for him A duke degree and playing pro ball. Man i wish I was 45 years younger (hahahahah)
Frank, I’m learning on the job here… but I think the answer lies in what Eliot said about him needing to work on repeating his mechanics. It also seems that the younger draftees go to the GCL, the older go to SS-A. As for graduating early, I believe he went to Duke for four years. Manno turns 22 next month so my guess is that he was in a school district with a December 1 cutoff vs. a September 1 cutoff and entered Kindergarten as a four-year-old that would turn five.
