Rochester Red Wings, 41-28, 1st I.L. East, 1GA – 86-56 overall
With a 4-2 series win over the RailRiders—fingers crossed the new identity is something shorter, like the Moosic Moose—the Red Wings opened up a two-game lead in the division, which is meaningless because the International League’s playoffs have a single round. Plus, the division is so heavily weighted toward geography there are two teams they did not play and only two teams in the other division.
That Rochester has been able to contend while using 53 different pitchers (not an exaggeration) and 25 different “starters” is a, um, minor miracle. The converse to the pitchers is that they’ve only used 28 different batters. That is unusual, as that number is usually in the range of 35-45 in a given season.
As Will would no doubt point out if I didn’t, the new front office’s refusal reluctance to promote position players has actually helped this club by giving it a solid core of 4A’s (e.g., Trey Lipscomb, Riley Adams, Brady House), a trio of guys who should have been promoted sooner (Yoyo Morales, Christian Franklin, Abimelec Ortiz) and a couple of guys who are perhaps purposefully being kept down with the looming lockout (Seaver King, Cayden Wallace). It’s nevertheless encouraging to see this many guys who could potentially play in D.C. without a team plane crashing.
