Norfolk 9 Rochester 8
• Cornelio (L, 0-1) 5IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 7K, 2HR
• Brzykcy ⅔ IP, 4H, 6R, 6ER, 2BB, 1K, HR
• Morales 3-4, 3R, BB, 2B, SB
• Chaparro 2-5, 3RBI
• Pinckney 2-5, R, RBI, 2SB
The Red Wings nearly overcame Zach Brzykcy’s in-game BP but fell one run shy to lose, 9-8. Riley Cornelio was dinged for three runs on two homers (four hits total) over five innings. He walked two and struck out seven for a serviceable AAA debut, but took the loss. A dishonorable mentin to Brzykcy for retiring just two of eight batters and letting in six to put Rochester into a 9-1 hole. The Red Wings scored one in the 7th, two in the 8th, and four in the 9th, highlighted by a pair of two-run singles by J.T. Arruda and Andrés Chaparro.
Harrisburg 5 Portland 4
• Susana 4⅔ IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 6K
• Santos (BS, 4; W, 5-4) 1IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 0K
• Made 2-3, R, BB, 2RBI
• Glasser 1-3, R, BB, RBI, SB
• King 1-4, R, 2B, RBI
It was a wild 9th as Harrisburg blew a 4-3 lead in the top half, then Portand literally threw it away in the bottom half of the innings, enough that Max Romero Jr. was able to lumber home from second base to score the game-winning run. That made a winner out of Junior Santos despite his fourth blown save. Jarlin Susana returned to City Isle for the first time since April 23, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Kevin Made drove in two while connecting for two singles and drawing a walk while Phillip Glasser rached base twice (single, walk) and Seaver King doubled to lead the Sens offense. Roster moves: RHP Jarlin Susana activated from the 7-Day I.L.
Aberdeen 10 Wilmington 0
• Randall (L, 0-1) 3⅔ IP, 10H, 8R, 7ER, 1BB, 4K, 2WP
• Jimenez 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Ross 2-3, BB
• Lomavita 0-3, 2K, E(18)
The Blue Rocks were shut out for the eleventh time this season, 10-0 on four hits. Josh Randall took the loss, strafed for ten hits and eight runs while walking one and striking out four over three and 2/3rds innings. Jackson Ross singled twice while Nate Rombach and Teo Banks singled once. Wilmington left on eight baserunners and went 0-for-5 with RISP.
Myrtle Beach 9 Fredericksburg 0 – GM. 1
• Sales(L, 0-1) 3⅓ IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 4K, 2WP
• Minckler 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Vaquero 1-3
• A. Feliz 1-3
Myrtle Beach scored in five of six “ups” while blanking Fredericksburg, 9-0 on four hits. It was the eleventh shutout of the season for the FredNats. R.J. Sales was rung up for four runs on six hits and three walks over three and a 1/3rds to take the loss. Cristhian Vaquero, Angel Feliz, Wyatt Henseler, and Christian Fagnant each had a single while Luke Dickerson and Randal Diaz each drew a walk.
Myrtle Beach 5 Fredericksburg 3 – GM. 2
• B. Romero 4IP, 4H, 0R, 3BB, 5K
• Baldo (L, 5-2) 1+ IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 1BB, 0K, HR
• Henseler 3-3, R, HBP
• R. Diaz 2-3, 2RBI
• Nunez 1-3, BB
In the nightcap—srsly, the game ended at 11:30—the Pelicans smacked a three-run HR in the bottom of the 8th to complete the doubleheader sweep, 5-3. Brayan Romero went the first four and gave up four hits, walked three, and struck out five. Merrick Baldo worked a scoreless 7th but gave up a single then the aforementioned Earl Weaver Special to take the loss, his second. (The Law Firm of) Wyatt Henseler singled three times and was bit by a pitch while Randal Diaz singled twice and drove in two to lead the FredNats attack.
DSL Giants Black 6 DSL Nationals 2
• J. Robles (L, 2-5) 3IP, 4H, 5R, 4ER, 0BB, 1K, 2HBP, WP
• Carela 3IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K
• N. De La Cruz 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI, SB
• Obispo 1-4, R, 3B
A six-run 4th did in the D-Nats, who had but two runs in response for a 6-2 loss. Jean Robles went the first three innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits, no walks, two hit batsmen, and one (1) strikeout. Nauris De La Cruz doubled, walked, and drove in a run while Juan Obsipo tripled and scored run to pace the DSL Nationals offense.
A few brutal Nats debuts from Randall and Sales…
But a really good return to Harrisburg from Susana. He was bossing A+ hitters during his rehab, so his stuff looks to be fully back, even if his stamina isn’t. Even though it’s been much abbreviated to injury, it’s been a very solid follow up to his breakout 2024 season.
What’s happened to Brzykcy?? He looks completely lost at the moment. He’s now got a 10.05 ERA in an increasingly large sample size in the majors of 28 IP/32 G. And he followed up his demotion inducing 6 ER performance against the Brewers with a 6 ER performance against the Tides.
Is it bad luck? Psychological? Or is he just another guy who can’t translate success at AAA to the big leagues? I hope he can figure it out. We can’t afford more prospect busts.
best I can tell Brzkcy was throwing in upper 90’s before TJ and is in the low to mid 90’s now.
a good in game conversation yesterday with Cavalli (if you can stomach Frandsen) talked about post surgery changes on how he released pitches.
maybe both, maybe neither.
Interesting. Maybe it’s the velocity. His K numbers definitely dropped off a bit post TJ. Add in a factor of big leaguers being able to punish bad pitches without elite velocity. In the minors, he’s been excellent at limiting contact (and been even better at this post TJ too). In 174 MILB IP, he’s allowed 16 HR (0.8/9IP), but in the majors he’s getting smacked around allowing 8 HR in 28 IP (2.5/9IP). That’s gotta change. But man, an ERA above 10 after 32 games is not good.
Fradsen taking salary from MASn
Still a Philly guy at heart I bet
Chaparro with 7 HR’s and a 1.072 OPS in his last 28 days may be forcing them to pull the plug on DeJong.
Susana hit 102 a couple times. He was consistently between 99 and 101 with a mid 80s breaking ball. The 9th inning was wild. Naranjo was thrown out trying to go 1st to 3rd on Romero’s single to RF. The 3rd baseman then overthrew 2nd base trying to get Romero who then scored.
Indeed. If that throw is accurate, game ends on a 9-5-4 (or 6; not clear from the MiLB.tv feed) double play.
Luke, thanks for those links to the boxscores. For the Fredericksburg DH, Green went 0-7 with 5 Ks. He’s now hitting .170. Is there any hope?
No.
Some folks praise the power of prayer. You could try that as a last option.
